I've been working on this recently as an adult. I've been finding that the proper tongue placement for the S, is the same as the Z. So if youre Zipper, zebra, zelda all sound good, try placing your tongue in the same spot for the S sound. You Zipper and sipper should be the same tongue placement(but with the vocal vibration she mentions). Zag & Sag, Zip & Sip, Zeek & Seek, Zero & Sero... I'm a full fledged adult and just today figured this out.... now to go record myself so I can hear it on play back...

Hi, really great job, thank you so much. I wanted to know more about lateral lisp, my lateral lisp is not because of tongue positioning but rather because of a dental treatment, I got my upper teeth pushed out but my lower teeth remained back, and because of the gap between the upper and lower canines and premolars, the air escaped from the sides when I say S, Z, T.
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 4 жыл бұрын
mansi beniwal yes, I have seen that before, and it sometimes can only be fixed through dental work HOWEVER, try using a soft “sh” sound for your initial /S/ words! Lots of singers do this intentionally! And instead of an “error” it is often considered a “dialect” or “accent” in many people’s speech!

The only problem that I have with my speech is my "s" sound. It always sounded like the "Th" more than the "S" sound. Apparently I have a massive underbite that not only affects my pronunciation, but I'm always left chewing my food after everyone has left the table. Getting braces soon, but until then, I'm trying to improve my "s" sound. Thank you!

Could you recommend some exercises to help with pushing air out through the nose whilst saying "s" and "z"? My son, 4.5, replaces these sounds with "grunts", the back of his tongue is pushed against the roof of his mouth whilst pushing the air out. He understands that's a problem and tries hard to sort it, but it's difficult to come up with ways of sorting it on our own. We've also moved to a different country and would really struggle to find a therapist now! Any help would be really appreciated.

My son is almost four, and I just realized that he has a frontal lisp. It sounds so much like "s" that I have missed it this entire time, and he has spoken very well since before two years old. He feels extremely discouraged now that it has been pointed out that he is not saying "s" correctly. He is a serious perfectionist. He now does not want to be taught because it makes him feel bad, no matter how happy and fun I try to be about it. He is angry just hearing me watch this video. Do you have any tips for teaching him indirectly how to say "s"? I really want to nip this in the bud if possible. He is a very intelligent child, and I am so sad that I somehow overlooked this problem. I cannot take him to a speech therapist because he absolutely will not wear a mask.

Ok. So I’m 35, and growing up- and even now- carry my stress in my neck, mouth, and jaw. This causes me to sleep with my tongue pushing against my top front teeth. Over the years, it has caused an over bite and a gap in between the top and bottom. I really think this is the source of my frontal lisp. I hate it! Have you heard of dental correction also fixing a lisp problem?

if air is escaping out of one side of your mouth - i would GUESS without seeing, that it is due to weekend oral muscles on the left side. Try some lip exercises to strengthen the muscles (20 times each, 3 times per day, for a week or 2)n and then try the /s/ again! hope this helps! www.superduperinc.com/handouts/pdf/179_Oral-MotorWorkout.pdf

Hi! Any advice for a child that doesn’t say the sound s? Instead says “ky” instead of sky. The s always drops off on all words. Thank you.
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely, this is the phonological process called “stopping” and it also could be related to “consonant cluster reduction” as well where the child reduces the consonants in a word, but it sounds mainly like stopping where the air flow is being stopped - use a hand cue to remind them to continue air flow & also add an /h/ sound to it to encourage the air flow like “sssss + hhhh + oooo” NOT “SH” that is a different sound, this is /s/ sound plus “h” sound! :) try this with regular words and THEN the /s-blend/ words like you mentioned in “sky” with the consonant cluster! Let me know if you have questions & I have another video on this I’ll attach below

I came here looking for advice on this exact issue! Hopefully she sees this and responds.
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 4 жыл бұрын
it is 1 of 2 things for the substitution "sh" for /s/ - 1) make sure her lips are TIGHT - neck should be flexed (so that that lips aren't falling forward, causing the tongue to also push together instead of being flat) or 2- her tongue is too far UP (this is almost impossible to tell on another person because her teeth are closed and you can't see the tongue behind teeth- try it on yourself - with tight lips make the "sh" sound and then run it into the "s" sound and you will FEEL the slight adjustments that the tongue makes of becoming more flat and also coming down to the bottom of the mouth! If you can figure out which one it is -and then make your little one aware of it, then progress should be a lot faster! Also - google "SH and S minimal pairs!" and find some words for her to practice that have visuals/pictures! Thsi is very helpful for little ones! :)

I wanted to just circle back. After attempting the goldfish technique that you suggested in one of your videos, as well as holding a pencil above her lip (for 'r' sound) and really not being able to do either, we visited a pediatric ent and discovered that our daughter has a lip tie and severe tongue tie(despite having it released at 1 week old).i am hoping that after surgery, these issues will be much easier to help her with.
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 4 жыл бұрын
@@ziadixsports6959 that is fantastic news that you found that out! YES! usually this is how parents figure out about the tongue tie because kids don't typically go to the dentist until much later! yes - I think your little one will be picking up all the new sounds very soon after! very exciting! :)

as much as they will tolerate without beginning to resent it (as long as you can keep their motivation high) maybe 3 times per day for 5 min each - what we really want to do is to draw their awareness to the error that way they are able to self-identify errors, and increase their ability and opportunities to self-correct

I have a slight over bite so when I put my teeth together, do I put my front teeth together or the back teeth? My s sounds dry if that makes sense? Like I don’t have saliva in my mouth. sometimes it’s sounds like a blend of a super soft “Th” + “Sh” +”f” sound combined. Is my youngest supposed to ever so slightly touch the incisive papilla. I notice that when it does it’s not midline with the top on my tongue. It’s a a few mm to the left of my tongue

My daughter has a hard time with the S sound she’s 4. When she says smoothie it sounds like movie. I was trying to teach her to smile when she says the s but then comes the m. How do you transition from a s to a m? I can not teach her myself it’s so difficult. Also her s sounds like a d sometimes. She says shorts but it sounds like dorts:(
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the /t/ or /d/ sound in place of /s/ is actually a phonological process (just means it a pattern of errors) called “Stopping” where the air flow of the sound is being stopped. This would also cause consonant cluster reduction in /s-blend/ words where the /s/ is dropped whenever there is a combination of /s/ with another consonant. I would recommend adding a visual and verbal cue each time (a speech sound hand cue - mine is taking a pointed finger and running it down your arm from the shoulder to the hand while blowing air out & making the /s/ sound the whole time - I model this is my other video with /s/ and /s-blends/! One more way is to model the word while adding an “h” sound after /s/ like “sssss-hhh-Aw” for “saw” For the word “shorts” it would be an “sh” sound that is distorted because in speech it’s the way the word sounds, instead of the way it is spelt which is hard to remember! You can do it! I hope this helped! Just use a hand cue and exaggerate the sound to help with encouraging the continuation of air flow !

My 4 year old keeps the snake in the cage for the entire word and not just the S sound. So when pronouncing Sam/Sky/Please she keeps her teeth clenched. Any tips for this please?
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Yes! Try breaking the sounds apart in the word like /sssa/ + /k/ (using the speech sound hand cue) and then /ai/! Then practice over and over again & even give the verbal cue “BIG OPEN MOUTH!” When the /k/ sound or /a/ sound is in the word! So break it a part to practice, over exaggerate the sound & give the verbal cue to OPEN mouth & then use the visual speech sound hand cue! *I have a free PDF on my website or you can find them all in my recent speech sound hand cues video! I hope this helps!

Hi, my nephew is 2yrs old, almost 3 (April 10) and he doesn’t do any of the following Does your child point to objects? Pointing to a toy he wants or to a picture in a book is closely related to the beginning of actual speech. Does he seem to understand what you say? Does he react when you call his name when you're out of sight? The ability to understand language precedes the ability to talk. If your child seems to comprehend a great deal of what others are saying, he's well on his way to talking. Does your child use gestures and facial expressions to communicate? Many kids communicate what they need nonverbally, and in fact most 2-year-olds develop a host of nonverbal signals. Does your child grunt? Research shows that the little grunts 2-year-olds make while pointing to pictures or playing with their toys are actually a kind of commentary. Children who aren't yet talking and don't grunt are more likely to later be diagnosed with a language delay. What can I do to have him speak? I need answers please! Thank you!
@TheSpeechScoop
@TheSpeechScoop 4 жыл бұрын
Great Question! I will make a video addressing these! Is your child imitating gestures? Does he/she wave bye bye? clap their hands? make any "fun" sounds such as gulping, gasping, uh oh, etc? Most children have to go through and/or gain the 12 pre-linguistic skills before they begin to speak or imitate sounds or words. To teach pointing, you will need to find something VERY motivating for the child, and hand over hand show them how to point to it and then immediately give them that object as soon as they point to it (you holding their hand/finger). You will model this same thing over and over again until the child does it independently. It also helps to provide 2 choices for the child (even if you know what they want) practice pointing at the non-desired object and then the desired object and getting one or the other each time they point. IF you child ONLY attends to the TV - have them point to turn the TV on (And have it cued up ready to go before hand) ORRRR point to request food/one goldfish, one cookie, etc. and do that over and over again. Hope this helps

Kelli Slemp Well he doesn’t do any pointing or anything, if he wants something (like go outside) he will pull us to the door. He makes “mmmm” sounds and vibrates his lips like pfpfpfpfpfpfpf sometimes, he will laugh with us and likes to run, he also doesn’t really react to sound like a normal baby, he once tripped but just layers on the ground with no crying ( he does cry though this is once incident) My uncles family is visiting but the dad can’t come so it’s just 2 moms and a dad in the house, i ask for help because I want to do something to help the 2yr old (there’s an 11m old and he’s REALLY smart and acts “normal”) These are his characteristics, what does it mean for him?

Aiwantobuild I will make a video for this! I’ll go through the pre-linguistic skills & then we will know where to begin for a “therapeutic approach” at home! You have to begin with a skill that the child already has, and then build off of it! (I.e. does he respond to his name? Does he attend to social games/routines like ring around the Rosy or giddy up horsey? How does he get snacks/food, make requests? Does he make eye contact when he’s pulling you?

Kelli Slemp 1: No 2: Yes 3: He will pull you to the oven, or stand in front of the refrigerator or oven or just stay in the kitchen 4: He sometimes does make eye contact when he’s pulling you, but when you reaches your destination, he will look at you for a bit then look at what he wants or what he needs and make mmm noises Thank you for making a video, I appreciate it a lot!

It's so hard to get used to the correct way of saying the word S. I am 23 years old and I've had a lateral lisp for as long as I can remember. Now, I can easily produce the correct way of saying the word S, but it's really hard to talk and still contain the correct form of producing the word. But if I try to say a sentence, my S sometimes sounds like an [Sh] and I always find myself going back to blowing air from the sides.. :(

Focus on pulling your tongue back & making the “EEEE” face which makes your neck flex. Practice that over & over again until your tongue stays in place / then try just breathing out the same, and finally, add your S sound!

it can gradually reduce on it’s own in some cases, but drawing the little ones attention to it & seeing if they’d like to try to correct it is the key factor (if the kiddo doesn’t care then the progress will be limited) so try to encourage & “stem” for correct production in isolation first, providing incentives & positive reinforcement for trying first! :) hope this helps!
