It could be worth mentioning that all these names are not just phonetically similar - they actually mean something ;) 英 means "outstanding, excellent, brave, a hero". 法 means "law, method, way". 德 means "virtue, goodness, morality, ethics" (I guess they come up with that name before WW2? :J )

Actually most of the country names are transliteration in Chinese, which be traced back over 100 years ago. For example: 英 - yīng - England 法 - fǎ - France 德 - dé - Deutschland

That's why I think they should mention the full names in the video. The countries' names in Chinese are mostly transliterations from English spellings or the native languages of the countries. I would say the characters picked have some meanings because the characters were different in the old times. France and Germany are more straight-forward here. 法国 is from “法兰西 共和国” , "French Republic". 德国 is from "德意志 联邦共和国", "Deutschland". 英国 is a special case here. Its full name should be "大 不列颠 及 北爱尔兰 联合王国", based on mixed transliteration and translation of UK, or "联合王国" for short. I looked it up online, most suggestions are that the "英" is from England/English. I don't know if there's any other reason for the sound "ying" haha.

A mnemonic to remember 'fa guo' for France could be that it is phonetically very similar to a French delicacy called foie gras. In my opinion it is cruel to the duck to make the dish but a simple association.

Becuase the last 3 countries' names are simply transliterated with three syllables. They can stand for the country names so there is no need to add 国 after them. Hope this will hope you.
