You have a fantastic gift for explaining things in laymen’s terms, but yet still using ‘musician intellect/terms.’ Please do more of these! I’d love to see how you would score this as a comedy.

Don't focus too much on the actual samples or sample libraries used: the takeaway here is how he approaches scoring and the techniques he uses. Both of these are brilliantly laid out in this video - a very good lesson for those interested in learning how to tackle scoring to picture.

It's not certain keys that change moods (especially when you're not a musician). It's the way the key/notes are applied and on what instruments.

very insightful on your process of creating a film score. And I totally understand that these are samples and not your final score. So once you get the notes on the page, do you hand the music to someone else that will create the music for each instrument of an orchestra or is everything done with the software program nowadays?

The strings supporting the piano are so abrasive, and also sound kind of off due to being in the upper register together with the piano: too epic for that moment. Something with a very slow attack and closer to the middle - as well as quieter - would've worked much better.

@FuzzballSounds16 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but it's the combination of harmony, melody and rhythm what makes music. You could add instrumentation and production to that list, and boy, you could get a whole bunch of stuff that is unlike anything else, but still works (Morricone, Vangelis, Williams). For me, the music in this video "doesn't work". Maybe it's just a taste thing... I prefer to hear Joe play some guitar
@leocomerford6 жыл бұрын
21 minutes for four styles of music is just enough time to give you an idea of how to hit the genre clichés for each style. What you do with that information is up to you.
@HBSuccess6 жыл бұрын
Low budget. This guy is very talented however and kudos to any trained musician who has figured out how to make a living with their craft, since 96% don’t.
@thosdot64976 жыл бұрын
Low budget? It's a 21min long free video covering some stock footage. What were you expecting? It's not likely to give you the keys to the kingdom, but it might be enough for you to go on the quest to find them. More on the Synth Sci-fi side would be nice. Or surf guitar (extending your great Spaghetti Western video...)
@FreakieFan4 жыл бұрын
Holy shit, have you, like ever, composed for strings? Violins don't sound like that, nor would ever play like that.

@elementsofphysicalreality6 жыл бұрын
Jesus, this is boring. I’m not bashing the composer, but the overall concept of doing this would bore me. I think I would prefer video game scoring than film scoring. In video games, you have more chances to create themes that reoccur. You have the ability to adapt them to the environment, like underwater or underworld in Mario Bros. Movie score is just strings that never go anywhere. Some great movies, like Star Wars, are heavily themed, but for ALL OTHER MOVIES ON EARTH, they’re not engaging.

Aaron Foltz requiem for a dream composer? What about him?
