We're talking a little speed screeding in this video about how to screed concrete. How fast is too fast and what is considered slow.
As I was editing this video, I timed how long it took us to screed this 36' x 24' garage concrete floor. The total time it took to screed was 7 minutes and 15 seconds.
The total yardage was 14 yards and the square footage was 864.
When we screed concrete, we don't intentionally try to hurry. The pace we used in the video is about the same pace we always use. The only time we may try to speed up is when we feel the concrete is "hot" and it's setting up faster than usual.
In the case of this garage floor, the actual screed time was about normal for most of the concrete guys I know in our area.
What do you think about how fast or how slow a concrete floor should be screeded at?

Don't be fooled DIY folks. These guys are masters at getting the right amount of concrete in the right place, that is why screeding is so easy for them. Moving heaving concrete around is a massive effort and they are SO good at putting it in the right spot the first time so they don't have to move it twice (or more). Everything said above is meant in massive respect to Mike and crew. As a contractor who only occasionally does concrete, I can speak from experience.

Back when I use to pour concrete the company had 4 different screeds they had handles on it so one guy can screed and the rest of the guys just racked! A good racker makes it easier on the guy on the screed when you use manual screed!

Another "wet" comment, you gotta educate youself by listening. I use water reducer for more flow and stronger concrete.
@JohnBrodt
@JohnBrodt 3 ай бұрын
@@MikeDayConcrete Could of fooled me. It looks like 5.5 - 6 inch slump after you added the water reducer. You need to expect "wet" comments from time to time if you like publicizing so much of your work, comes with the territory . I just know that adding to much water does weaken concrete, and not to many people are aware of a water reducer or other Concrete chemical admixtures. And not every video do people see you stress or state "water reducer" agents in the videos. But that mix looks very easy to manage vs. say a standard 4 inch slump or thicker sometimes when code calls for it. Thanks for the clarification, and the videos.

Great work Mike, no one standing around, everyone has a job to do. I've done a few shed floors and in Aust we have a warm climate. Most times the shed is already erected so form work is minimal. The last one was 16m x 6m with two drainage points at approx 5m and 10m, running through the centre. We put the correct slope in using hand screed around the drains and used a vibrating screed on flat sections then bull float it. Basically, dividing up the floor into different sections. Just about every floor Ive seen you do is flat. Would be good to see a floor that has drainage sections and flat sections, can you get a slope using a vibrating screed for example?
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 3 ай бұрын
I've got a lot of videos showing us screeding around drains in YT. We hand screed them for precise slopes.

Most the jobs we do like this are engineered to do with fibermesh, 3500 psi concrete with water reducer. I'm a sub so I don't have a say, just hired to pour and finish the floors.

When Mike said Eric in the background was a school teacher, my first thought was cool. It was always neat to hear that that nerdy science teacher was into something you could relate to. Made you realize that others are more like you than ya think. Then my second thought went off. Hmm. A school teacher eh? Ya know who he probably voted for😢

It's required by code in a lot of cities here in Ohio nowadays. Some places either wire or fiber. Some places require both fiber and wire. If you've ever torn one out, you know wire is stronger. But of course, wire rusts and expands so it's only lasting 20 or 30 years tops. But that's okay I guess here. Might be different in warmer climates.
