Great tutorial I also make a lot of tabards for my space Marines and use a very similar technique but instead of using the flat glass I put the lump of green stuff in between some parchment paper and roll it out

I really enjoy the longer format, it is very nice, chill and pedagogic :) personnay I use hand lotion instead of vaseline, so I also have a bit of skin care session while sculting ^^

Have you tried using parchment paper as a surface for rolling out the "greenstuff"? It's relatively non-stick surface could eliminate or at least reduce the need for as much petroleum jelly

Not an unreasonable thought. You could use cloth, but you'd have less control over its final look and you'd also have limited painting options. Sculpting also allows you to make some appropriate to the scale of the model. Welcome to the hobby!
