How to seal a shower enclosure.

Over the years I’ve witnessed shower enclosures being sealed in all different ways and completely incorrectly.
I will show you how to seal the enclosure properly, and with a little tip that most installers and DIY’ers miss!

Thanks for the video, I have just removed the sealant from the inside of my shower cubicle..... The installer had sealed literally everything which is totally opposite to what you and others have suggested! I will follow your advice when reapplying

The only reservation would be that you should never lick your finger and rub sealant as the bacteria from saliva creates a bed of bacteria within the sealant and then this eventually leads to mould problems. It’s best to pour a tiny amount of washing up liquid onto a tray and dip your finger onto that

FFs, Rob. Right as I go to seal my new enclosure from the inside, I catch this vid. Cheers. Have already sealed from outside and started using shower; then noticed water gets under frame inside anyway and thought I'd be 'thorough' and seal the inside as well. Realise now I'd be setting up a water trap. Thanks for the simple but effective info.

Very informative. Just wondering how best to do the inside, around the tray area the? Do you do a couple of inches around the front profile where the frame is?

Good tip…. Do the 4 inches of silicone when you push the shower screen into the profile… only seal the outer edge of the wall profile on the inside. Then the silicone squashes in real good and seals it 👍

Great intuative video. But I do have one question for you: On the left hand side of our shower quadrant, its butting up against the boxed in soil pipe ,thus not allowing me to get in with either mastic gun or hands (as there's less than an inch space). Therefore would you recommend (for that side only) vertically masticing on the inside?

Really well demonstrated 👍One thing I'd say after the verticals is any saliva at the bottom corners won't allow for the horizontal bead to tray (corners) I do tons of door sets and as said this video was spot on! I do put some around the profile screw points and bottom just to protect the holes and to not rely on the grout between the the tile and tray behind the wall profile 👍

Also many housebuilders install the screens before the sealant so water can run down behind the metal and into the gap not sealed behind. Which makes me wonder why you cant seal on the inside vertically to stop water entering this space?

If you have a square or rectangular tray,make sure it has x4 upstands....no more leaks.

my mothers shower is leaking where the glass meets the metal at the bottom, the water is getting under the glass on the inside then up over the metal on the outside. can i seal the glass on the outside where the water is getting out?

Never use saliva. Starts off the mould process eventhough the silicone may be mould resistant.

If the water gets trapped behind the shower frames from the inside are you saying the water will drip back inside the shower tray? If so I can't imagine that all of it will drip back in from that position as it's not on a slope. Isn't it better just to seal the inside as well and be fastidious about replacing it every few years?

I’m afraid that would be a bad idea and most likely invalidate your warranty as it would contravene the installation instructions. If sealed properly on the outside you shouldn’t have any issues.

Hi, my shower enclosure is the same and leaks in the same area .when you train shower head in corner it's leaks a few away from the edge as if it's filling up then leaking .I now understand why .cheers

Looked at video again ,the Channel fixed to the plastic wall panels , holding glass is siliconed on inside and outside in my shower to prevent water getting behind the channel.are you saying the fine seam on the inside should not be siliconed.didnt install it so unsure how it all fits together and the water paths it can take without stripping it all out .cheers Chris

@@chrisgallivan1673 Having recently installed, I can tell you that sealing inside on the two fixed 'holding glass' panels along their base contact line with frame was also pictured in my final instruction page, plus the obvious complete seal of the outside as Rob demonstrated.

No, the first bead is tight against the wall and the back edge of the enclosure. The final section is just in front of that where 2 parts of the enclosure join.

@@davidhale8034 david tried to compare my enclosure with your one , i really can't see a join in the video ,is it a couple of mm in front , wouldnt the first sealant run have covered it . what we talking about in distance just so i can take a real close look . great video .

Using finger instead of profiling tool is problematic. The Fugi kit you had there includes a bridging adaptor to slide over the tiles so that would be my tool....not my finger. You want zero contaminants in the seal as that encourages mould and also a finger tends to make the edge too thin and fragile.

Hi, thank you for watching and thank you for your comment. Profiling tools are fantastic and we use them on 99% of our silicone detailing work. However, the vast majority of shower enclosures we install on a weekly basis will tend to have a ‘crescent’ or ‘half moon’ shaped wall profile that make it most difficult to insert a profiling tool flush to the wall and at the same time flush to the profile to achieve an even bevel. This is why we have to be proficient in both disciplines as we can’t rely on the profiling tools for every scenario. We always use a Dow Corning anti mould, anti bacterial sealant, and I can assure you that after 22 years of installation I’ve not witnessed a significant mould build up due to using your finger to detail the sealant. To be fair to you this Is one of 3 vids I viewed and I have now cured the leak that My 'handy man/fitter failed to cure despite 3 revisits so even though I jest about the saliva I appreciate you posting the vid 👍
