Thanks mate, I now feel more confident to silicone my shower tray. I removed old silicon using window scraper as you suggested. The tip to use the blue corner thing - genius! I have one of these lying about from my plastering jobs! Other golden tip was NOT using your finger tips as you immediately transfer bacteria onto the new silicon. Thanks very much for the tips. Been putting this off for a year but today following your tips at last I have got all the old stuff out and cleaned it up ready for the silicone which I hope to do tomorrow . The clean edge tool looks a good idea so I purchased one. A tip for others a good newish paper scraper also slices through the old silicone and a screwdrier that fits nicely between the tile and the shower base is good for getting out bits that didnt come out with a pull.

OMG Thank God I watched this!!! My shower has been leaking for 6 months (into the garage below) so I've not used it for six months, had to have baths instead.... But I spent all day cleaning and bleaching the shower today -- and tomorrow I was just gonna silicone over the old silicone!!! I didn't think to remove the old stuff! Thanks so much for the tip.

Thanks for the tips , didn't have the nice silicone former so improvised and used an old gym pass card , just cut the corner off . Alright PP!! I have considered in the past having a t-shirt made which says "silicon sealing does not scare me" but to be truthful it still brings me out in a sweat so maybe not just yet.... Window scraper with Irwin blade all the way for me, though not seen that retracting version before. Smooth. Then bit of chemical remover if needed, then meths (mostly for cleaning...) then new stuff. Formers much better than finger as gives good decent sized cross section. Take it easy!

I've found that if you spray the low flat seal beads (where water sits) every year with white wine vinegar and water (60/40) it never goes mouldy. Thanks for the tip on the plastic disk. Gonna make one. I was always using a wet finger and always got in a reeet mess.

The new Cramer Fugi profiler kit has clip-on plastic rails which bridge the grout lines, so you don't leave little dents in the silicone where they cross.

I did my shower tray week and did a neat job, but have noticed it’s leaking I checked the tube and it’s dowsil 796 the stuff for windows & doors would this be the reason even if it’s got no gaps and it still looks tidy?

Would you seal the tray and the verticals at the same time? if so how do you stop the Fugi smudging the other bead...? Or is it best to allow one to dry and then apply? Or will this join be an area where issues may develop in the future?The Fugi kits come with little wedges to stop grout lines messing with the seal profile - Should these be used or does this create a place for water to gather..As you can probably tell I'm going out of my mind here....Sort me out with a professional view.

Do a video on how I can avoid tradesmen from hell😂 I either get messrs bodgit and run or John Wayne and the cast from the Alamo which is why I am doing this stuff myself, wrong side of 60 with one hip replacement done and another one lined up for when covid19 has run its course! Use the tool the opposite way first so the chamfer pushes silicone into the joints then use opposite way to finish off.

Live and learn , another valuable tip. When removing excess silicone from the edging tool with toilet paper make sure you put the messy paper into a container or a plastic bag. Dont put it on the floor of the shower tray whilst you carry on working. If you have a small putty knife ( looks like a small paper scraper ) you can use that to take off most of the excess silicone on the edging tool and use it to fill in the gap further along the shower tray.

Good tips. I already tried sealing without removing the old silicant. Didn't work. Waste of time and money. This time I have removed the old silicant but not scraped away the excess. Now I'm off to B&Q for a window scraper and one of those smoothing tools you used. I would have used my finger and made a right mess. By the way, I don't mind the banter. Because most of it was at the end. I could enjoy it knowing that I didn't have a hundred more videos to sit through because this one had answered my questions. Mind you I have to admit that at the beginning even the word "hello, I'm John" had me saying to myself "I don't need your name or an introduction to the video, I might have tons more to watch yet'.

Hello Plumber parts. I just want to ask about my shower. Back in the 1970's when my shower was installed they put in a shower liner attached to the wall with nails. The liner has come away from the wall because the nails heads weren't big enough. So now I'm wondering if I go, remove the nails what should I use instead in a wet environment. Are there caps I can put on the end of screws or something like that?

Also the shower tray is not level. Have replaced the vanity in the bathroom (it was absolutely horrible) , but this shower I'm hoping to last me a few more years. I went under the house but got no clues as to why the metal shower tray is at an angle so you end up with a pool on one side. Anyway I'm not the most clued up about plumbing. Will eventually pay someone to rip the whole shower out but got to make do cause blew all the renovation money on double glazing. I am planning on replacing the toilet seat though just cause it will make the toilet look a bit newer than 44 years old. Thanks love your channel :)

Good video @plumberparts BUT I found that there is a 4mm ish gap between tray and tile, full of silicone. I'm led to believe you shouldn't silicone on top of old silicone.. but digging it out of this gap is hell.. help!

When Grouting a shower for the first time , should the joint between the shower tray and tiles be grouted or left open to receive more silicone ? Also the same question regarding the vertical corner joints ?. Many thanks in advance

If the shower tray has an upturn that has the wall sheet on top of it, this joint is sealed as part of your waterproofing process. The joint between the bottom of the tiles and shower tray should not be sealed! It should have a 1.5mm gap unless the shower base has drain recesses moulded into it. Grout is porous and you get some water behind the tiles. Seal that bottom joint and it can't escape. That leads to water damage outside the shower enclosure and mould growth at the silicone, as seen in the video.

LakesLee, silicone former's follow the conjecture of whatever its riding against. if surface is really rough on 1 or both sides of the crack its hard to use this tool & get a good seal on either side of the caulk, try taping off the smooth side if u have 1 & put in as little caulking as possible & strike with finger both ways to work it tight in the rough surface. you can apply a little more then if needed. remove tape carefully while still wet. hope this helps.

I use mr sheen polish it stops it sticking to anything you dont want it too . Try it ;)
