Oh thank you thank you! Seams and weaving in are my sore spots but this really helped me work this tiny hat I'm making for my sister's stuffed toy. Now I might try a flat worked hat in earnest (I usually round knit) just to practice the seaming. You have a great teaching method.

If I do this on the right side rows of my hat, but then my brim is turned up, the brim shows the backside seam. To solve this problem- would I do the mattress seam with 2 different pieces of yarn, first doing the mattress stitch on the WRONG side (working from the cast-on brim up), then doing another mattress stitch on the RIGHT side of the hat, (from the top of the FOLDED brim on through the top)? My husband keeps his hat brims always upturned, so I have taken to using a sewn stitch in 3 or 4 place to keep it in place, but then that mattress seam always shows. Is there another way you can think of to not have the seam show on the upturned brim? Thanks again for such a clear concise explanation of this stitch!
@CynthiaHyslop
@CynthiaHyslop 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! You are absolutely right. If the brim of the hat is turned up, then the right side changes part way up the hat. I do just what you're describing, except that I still start at the bottom, with the hat "inside out" and seam the brim first. Then, I push the yarn needle through to the other side, turn the hat "right side out" and continue to seam up to the top. When you're done, and you fold the brim up, the seam will be inside the fold. Does that make sense?

@CynthiaHyslop
@CynthiaHyslop 7 жыл бұрын
Well, making hats in the round means you don't have to seam, so that's a step you don't have to do. Mattress stitch is a handy technique for many things, though. Not just knitting! You can use it with crochet and on fabric as well.

How did you finish the top of the hat? Did you bind off the stitches? The patterns I've seen say to weave the yarn through the last few stitches and pull tight, then follow with the seam from the top down. If I use that technique with this approach, how do I secure the stitches at the top?
@CynthiaHyslop
@CynthiaHyslop 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the long delay in replying! This is an excellent question. I generally do what you've been instructed to do, which is to thread the remaining stitches onto the tail yarn with a wool needle and then pull tight. The trick is that, if you can, you should thread your yarn through the stitches one more time, to fill in the hole at the top and to make it more secure. Then you pull your tail into the inside of your hat (use your wool needle) and weave in the tail along the inside of the top of your hat. Weaving the end in keeps the stitches at the top secure.

Two things: 1) What stitch did you use for knitting the body of this hat? 2) Do you have a pattern for this hat? I have the hardest time calculating how many CO’s even when doing a sample swatch! 🤷‍♀️ BTW, This was an excellent teaching video!
@Yarniversity
@Yarniversity 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Joyce. The body of the hat is made in stockinette stitch (knit flat). There is a pattern for the hat. You can find it here: rivercityyarns.com/products/freepatterns?variant=31199614533705.

How would you seam it if you had a turned up brim of hat?
@CynthiaHyslop
@CynthiaHyslop 7 жыл бұрын
Great question! You always seam with the right side facing, so I would seam up the main part of the hat just as I did in the video but leave a nice, long tail. Then, flip the hat inside out and use the rest of the tail to finish seaming the brim. When you fold up the brim, the seam will be "inside" (inside the fold).

Hi, what do u mean by u make use of a purl on one side and a knit on the other side because I see both sides are exactly the same?
@Yarniversity
@Yarniversity Жыл бұрын
Ah, I think what I was referring to is the knit stitches (on the facing out side) are purl stitches (on the facing in side). In this case, with the hat, by "other side", I mean the inside. Does that help?

What to do with the rest of the red string ? So it doesn’t come apart
@Yarniversity
@Yarniversity Жыл бұрын
Hi there. You will weave in both ends of your yarn (I used red yarn so that it will show up well for the video). Just use a wool needle to tuck each of the ends of your sewing yarn into the edge of the seam you've just created. I hope that helps!

How would you do this seam with multiple colors in a knit flat hat?
@CynthiaHyslop
@CynthiaHyslop 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! If it's a striping yarn, you put your locking stitch markers or pins in to help you line up the stripes and then you seam (mattress stitch) the same way. If the stripes are mis-aligned, just pull back your seaming yarn and adjust the seam a little to get it more aligned. If it's a variegated yarn (just lots of colour), I just seam the same way (no special attempt to line things up.) Does that help?

Sl1 and knit edge seaming?
@Yarniversity
@Yarniversity 7 күн бұрын
Are you asking about slipping the first stitch of each row? Do you like that approach better for seaming? I find that my slipped edges don't have enough "give" for stockinette stitch, so I prefer to knit each stitch in the row. How about you?
@ginagina9236
@ginagina9236 7 күн бұрын
@Yarniversity I recently knitted a hat with SL1 edge, and a knit edge. I am unable to identify where to create the whip stitch seam to close the hat(it was knitted on straight needles). Videos on KZbin don't seem to cover this topic/tutorial. Thank you.
