Got mine Thursday. Built it that same night. Seasoned mine yesterday. Coming from the lower level “Smokin Champ” this one is damn good. Charcoal basket is nice. Literally NO leaks. Holds temps well and uses less fuel. Very satisfied. Almost went the Old Country Pecos route but this one had two racks, buffer, gaskets, charcoal basket, three thermometer ports. All worth it for $100 difference.

I was about to purchase an offset from another brand....I think I’ll wait and see your first cook. So far, that’s a good looking rig, and I may be sold on that model even.

I am super excited to use it. I love the double racks, and it comes with a charcoal basket and even a baffle plate.

Hey Cass, thought I would let you know. Home Depot no longer sells the Grand Champ. I returned 3 of them since September 2022. first one came damaged to home depot, did not accept it. 2nd one caught fire, the drain end was built higher than the fire box end, all grease flowed to fire box wall and caught fire which also caught my 85.00 brisket on fire. 3rd one came in Feb 7th 2023, fire box lid and cooking chamber lid had 5/8" gap. Talked to HD customer service, they said to many complaints and no longer selling the grand champ.

Damn that sucks! I love mine! I cook on it all the time and have had 0 issues. Good information to know, though, for a potential buyer!

@@CassCooking Something must have happened to quality control. Hd today told me if I would keep it they would refund all money less 142.00. For 142.00 I kept it, I weld, so I can fix it.

Excellent advice: The owner manual for mine; wipe down with cooking oil.

Great advice. Though I oiled mine twice. I also put some probes in the chamber 2nd time to get a better idea of the kind of temps I'm getting.

Does it matter if you use lump vs briquette for the initial burn. I have a bag of b&b briquettes. Could I use that to burn in with post oak?
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
ANY fuel source you want to use is fine for the "burn off" and seasoning process!! The main thing is higher temps for a long period of time to get out all the oil and season the metal properly!
@jameswalker54093 жыл бұрын
So it looks like you keep the fire box lid open during the burn off session. Is that correct?
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
@@jameswalker5409 no that was just to let the wood catch fire a bit. You can shut the firebox while seasoning
@jameswalker54093 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I've seen some other XD seasoning burns and they also did a seasoning burn in the cooking chamber after doing the smoker box. Is that necessary?
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
@@jameswalker5409 I did not do that but it certainly doesn't hurt! Using the firebox was sufficient enough for me!
@leslierose-akumbu42633 жыл бұрын
I have a question. At around 2:15 - 2:16, you explained how the air flow should be going through with the firebox "closed," but you have the firebox "open" the entire time..?? I was confused on this part. Or, maybe you say that but you're keeping the firebox open for the demonstration purposes of this video. Thank again!❤
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
Yes just for demonstration purposes. I shut the firebox during the seasoning

How often should we re-season? Sorry if I missed it
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how often you use it, the weather it sits through, if it has a cover...etc. I'd say use your gut! If you think it may need it, then clean it and re season it! Hope that helps

I have been thinking about getting this one. Did u add any silicone to any when you put ti together?
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
No I have not! I don't usually add gaskets or clamps or any aftermarket items to my cookers. I get along just fine over here! This one however comes with a high temp gasket on both firebox doors, and a high temp gasket on the main chamber door as well!
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
This unit also comes with a steel baffle plate for better heat distribution. I know a lot of people like to add those after the fact. This one comes with it
@CassCooking3 жыл бұрын
@@raytrout8272 right on man also on this one you can flip the pan upside down for kind of a heat distributor its pretty awesome. Saw it on another guys youtube video. I wish I could remember who it was I would tag him

@@raytrout8272 oh yea to answer your question the heat deflector on this XD Series is a 45 degree angle plate that hangs just over the opening from the firebox.
