How to secure cabinets and bed (DIY van conversion)

This video is about DIY van conversion. It explains technics that I used to secure my cabinets and bed without drilling any holes in my van.

If you do not drill any holes in your van to secure your cabinets and bed, you will get more money for your old van. Also, with those cabinets and bed built the way shown in my videos, you will be able to transfer them in another new van!
The technics shown are good for every vehicle. My van is just an exemple that it can be done.

Merci, Eric...I am making templates today for cupboards. Each trip I add something and this time with a newer van, I have removed the stow and go seats and am working on storage and cupboards. No sink, shower or solar panel yet, though...thank you for your practical, do-able suggestions and clear instructions for safety...you are like my van travel guru! I think my male handyman neighbours kind of like it when I ask for their advice and help once in a while, but, really, you deserve the credit. Keep sharing your expertise, it's inspiring!

Hi there, I'm currently in an '03 Ford E350 extended van living in NYC. I'm also an avid downhill mountain biker, snowboarder and kayaker... you get the picture, adrenaline junkie type 😆 I'd recommend getting a hitch and hitch style bicycle rack on your van as it frees up considerable space inside. I only bring my bikes or boards inside if the weather is inclement or neighborhood is bad. I would encourage you to consider leaving as much open space in your van as possible to move around and not feel claustrophobic. Also, so it's not visually cluttered. Also, have a bed which will be easy to set up: absolutely sucks having to transform your bed. Eric's pull out system isn't complicated, ave works well for him. Since I have a large van, my bed is always ready and I have storage bins underneath for food, clothing and miscellaneous items. Inside the van, I have space for a small table, a two burner stove and a cooler - which serves as cooler, chair, ottoman and night stand by my bedside at night. Also, it's my step-stool (ladder) if I ever need to reach for something higher off the ground. Just a cheap cooler, I think I paid $20 for it 10 yrs ago. Anyway, find items which serve multiple purposes if possible and keep your build as simple as possible, your sanity will thank you for it.

For me, for now, I put my bikes on the roof, but your point of using a hitch rack is better for fuel consumption an much more easy to manipulate the bikes! Also a minivan got a roof that may be high to manipulate bikes for a person that is not too tall... Great comment and great point! Thank you! ✌️

Hi Eric, I've been considering various vehicles for a camper conversion. Previously, I've done both a box truck and a honda odyssey, and I preferred the latter, though it was only for weekend beach camping. Your videos really make this more possible for the long term. Thank you soooo much for your straightforward and genuinely helpful work- i know it takes time to put together. For anyone considering a box truck and such- big, cumbersome, rattly vehicle, known to leak water, people hate them so you get ticketed often for no reason. Imagine parking in a safe neighborhood without harassment, minivan is the way to go!

@@ericenjoysearth2756 thanks Eric! Just got my 2001 sienna and have been doing the cardboard templates for the cabinets! I'm making mine thinner and mirroring them on both sides of the bed. So far I have about half of the plywood cut out for the cabinets as of today 👍

I love your videos about how you made your cupboards and bed. Keep forgetting to leave a comment as I can't wait to watch the next one. I lived on the road in a small motorhome for 7 years here in Australia. Now looking into something small that I can use as car and camper to do small trips from my new home. One thing I loved in my motorhome was lots of towel rails under all the cupboards to hang wet stuff on. Where do you hang wet gear? I agree that it's important to be able to access everything from inside as it's rarely just nice weather. I had plenty of hot, cold, wet, windy, stormy weather not to mention insects, flies, mossies, bees, bugs by the thousands. I love that you have views, so many vans have no windows.

Hello Marianne! Inside, I have a 3 sticks hanger just in front of my sink. I have also 2 bungee cords that I use. I attach them to the security handles over the windows. Inside a cabinet, where I have my water tanks, I have another hanger. Outside, I also use the bars of my roof rack, with hangers, for my wetsuit. Effectively there is never too much of those places to dry stuff... I am glade that we share the same perspectives. I would never deprive myself of a nice viewing and of course, would never had an outside kitchen! So much inappropriate situations... Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your experience ✌️

From Texas, in the middle of constructing a bed based on your design. Lowe’s has precut panels the right size for the bed, got the premium grade lumber you recommended from Home Depot. Everything is fitting together nicely. Thanks for posting your vids.

Greetings from snowy Chicago area... I have been viewing your videos for a while and good to see some new contents. I think your design is quite intriguing. I'm saving up for class B rv but more and more, conversion like yours is more appealing. Only problem is my wife has stated that only way we'll do any kind of rving is to have a bathroom in the unit for the frequent trips to restroom at night. Haven't figured out how to get around that problem. Having a travel toilet in such small space doesn't appeal to me either.

We use each on a pee jar (girl friend also). Will elaborate about this in a video... A small camping toilet can be added, but by reducing drastically the front cabinet. The other thing is for number 2, it is not necessary comfortable to do the job with somebody by your side.... Thank you for your appreciation! ✌️

Could you focus on bed design? It appears to folds up in the back and in the front and the front slides. And it also appears that although you put vinyl flooring in the front you didn't put it in the back under the bed in order to make use of the u devices in the floor in the back of the van. That's brilliant! I'm wondering if you could share the materials and hardware and design for the bed, dimensions for everything. Even if you don't have a video of yourself making it, I'd be fine with just data. Thank you so much for sharing. Your videos are great and have saved me from quite a few mistakes. It will make a trip to the Oregon Coast alot more enjoyable! Even though we live in Portland OR the motels on the coast are expensive so we have been wanting to convert our van.

Another great video, Eric! I live west of Toronto, and have a Sienna as well. Your videos will be a strong template for my upcoming build in the spring. My biggest issue is how to level the floor, as my 2015 has quite large seat clips to work around. Love to see how you make a removable floor!

This is a great conversion!! I like the idea that while the modules are transferable, they are also very securely tightened. I’m planning a conversion soon in my Ford Expedition, 2003 model, and would like to incorporate some of your ideas. I’m in Indiana now, and hope to be out west in a few years

I'm thinking slightly smaller drawer by sink, then you could put a surround drawer there. An Asian guy with the Nissan one did this. His was so slick. It had a shower and toilet, too! lol.

They are stored in a basement. I am putting mileage on my van and will replace it with another identical. That they I will put back the seat in my old van and sell it as a regular van and will transfer my cabinet, bed, flooring, etc in my new one. There will me no way to know that it was a concerted Van! It may interest you to know that the Toyota Sienna is now available as a HYBRID. Now why is that important? For the fuel economy? Answer: No. It’s important because a hybrid will run your a/c off of the car’s lithium battery 🔋 and when it gets low...it kicks over to the engine and sips only a small amount of gas to recharge the battery. What this means is that while other van-lifers are doing their tips and tricks to stay cool...you are just using your a/c. To do the same in a non-hybrid vehicle, you would have to be hooked up to shore-power! One guy living out of his Prius reports he only spends $2 a day on gas ⛽️ just leaving the a/c on. That’s insanely economical.

This is quite a surprising comment! I just wander how long you can have AC working without having the motor to run...?! Plus, you have to consider that a motor running on idle is pretty damaging... There’s a lot of lubrification that is made by lapping... Personally I would not go for an hybrid for this....✌️

@@ericenjoysearth2756 Excellent points to consider. I like to think of it as one more tool in the van/life tool chest. You would only need to take advantage of this feature during the hottest parts of the day. Also, as far as running a motor on idle being damaging goes, it’s not idling for hours at a time or anything. People are reporting that it only idles for about 5 minutes or so and then depending on your climate settings...it could be anywhere from 30 minutes to possibly hours before it even kicks on again. Currently, there are KZbin videos of people installing all kinds of non-shore power A/C solutions. They typically involve a lot of solar panels. I love solar power but this gets the job done in complete stealth! That’s what I love about this method. 😎
