Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves kzbin.infoUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

Thanks for the video! Great idea, as i also hate when my bookcase sticks out weird when they sit next to each other! For a nice finish, add some trim all around and it will look like one custom unit!

Fantastic thanks heaps - I followed this, and got a great result! One additional tip from me is that to protect a veneer finish when drilling the holes, I drilled until I could just see the bit coming out the other side, then removed the bit and drilled a little from the other side. I found that if you go all the way from one side you can push away larger shards of the veneer and it detracts from the finished job. But thanks heaps!

Yes, that's a great tip (pun intended). Nice to keep it neat & clean.

Hey there. I'm swedish so obviously we got a lot of IKEA furniture in our home, of course some Billys. Did you secure the bookshelves in the wall as well? If not, I recommend you do so. Did you know that a swede would pronounce IKEA with the I as in India? IKEA is an acronym from the founder Ingvar Kamprad and the farm Elmtaryd in the village Agunnaryd.
@AverageMe
@AverageMe 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that's how Swede's would pronounce that. My father was Norwegian; I wonder how he would've pronounced it! As for securing it to the wall, I have not yet but I probably will as it's a pretty tall unit.

So although I don’t have Billy bookcases I figured it would be the same for the mainstays I have from Walmart. I bought the 35mm bolts like you said but the seem to be too long. They aren’t flush so the end cap is protruding out. I’m guessing I may need to down size to 30mm ?

@AverageMe
@AverageMe Жыл бұрын
I think up might be at risk of either having the unit tip or eventually causing the shelves to bend or buckle if you force them together. Have you considered putting shims under the bookcases to compensate for the uneven floor? You can buy wooden or plastic shims at any hardware store. Of course, I'd advise you attach them to the wall with the provided L-brackets just to be safe.

Sure, if you want to drill holes where the shelves will be positioned. My only concern would be the added thickness interfering with the shelf being put in place. You’re right, it doesn’t have to go into one of the existing peg holes.

@AverageMe
@AverageMe 8 ай бұрын
Not a dumb question but there’s not a specific answer. It depends on the size of the fastener. To be sure, either use a drill bit gauge (it’s a piece of metal with many holes that indicate drill bit sizes), or simply drill test holes into a scrap piece of wood and see which one fits your fastener.

How would you suggest attaching two bookcases, back to back?
@AverageMe
@AverageMe Жыл бұрын
My initial thought would be a metal strap at the top. It would be tricky connecting them lower and still keeping it hidden. I'd look into some kind of connectors (straps) that have plastic snap covers to hide the hardware. Wander around the hardware store and you'll be surprised how many ideas you can find that you never thought of.

There are a variety of sizes available. When I purchased, there was a clickable option to choose a variety of sizes. I suggest measuring the width of your bookcase wood, double that (because you're attaching 2 pieces together), and order a length that will work with the dimension.

Hi! I just bought 3 secondhand Hemnes bookshelves from IKEA (two wide ones with one skinny bookcase in the middle). I want to attach all three together to make them sturdier and also want to secure them to the wall. Im not super handy, so what’s the best way going about this? Anchoring first one of the larger side cases to the wall and then attaching the skinnier middle bookcase to it, then securing the other large side case to the wall and then to the middle one?

@AverageMe
@AverageMe 5 ай бұрын
@@beverleyvaldez920 I’m not sure I understand your situation, but a hex head bolt uses a hex socket. You can drive it with a socket wrench, ratchet, or screwdriver-like handle. It sounds like you’d need to use a hex socket on each side. I wouldn’t use anything like a bolt on this project as it would certainly interfere with items on the bookcase.

You have a closet over 12' tall? If it were me, I'd use "L" brackets and butterfly-type anchors -- lots of them -- to attach the bookcases to the wall, and secure the stacked bookcases to one another with steel mending plates. I wouldn't want a bookcase falling from over 6' !

@@AverageMe thank you. I will be using mending plates. The top one sits a few inches less than the bottom so there will be a bit of a ledge, and I'll use small L-shelf brackets there.
