How to SEE your piston to valve clearance

This is a simple comparison between the stock cams and the aftermarket ones so we could get a visible piston to valve clearance rather than relying on plasticine. PLEASE NOTE: This is not how to dial cams in or get any specific measurements to setting up cam timing. You NEED a dial indicator for that!

This is the best engine phase content I've seen in my life. I was planning to do a similar job, but with the help of plasticine attached to the piston. Could you cut the block in the area of the oil channel to study the option of installing oil injectors, for example, from 4ag 20v.

The way I like to imagine valve to piston clearance is: on the exhaust stroke the piston chases the exhaust valve closed. On the intake stroke the inlet valve chases the piston down the bore. Your risky areas are 10o btdc and 10o atdc

Awesome Video. I used putty... A whole brick and the cams barely sniffed it. 🤣 Messy to clean up. Now you make me want to try that intake. Cam mod 🤣. With my 5efhe cams I switched to using the 4e cam sprocket timing mark, which retards the valve timing slightly(about 2.2 degrees) which smoothed out my power delivery which used to feel punchy and flat, but I've made other improvements since then so this timing mark may only be a myth at this point. Thanks for the insight(literally) 😁👌🏾

Awesome man ive been doing a little bit of research and apparent retarding the exhaust cam will give higher hp, but a low end power loss. Doesn't say much about the intake cam though. Ill have to try it on dyno and let you know

@@MattBerrymotorsport I had a .pdf of a study Mitsubishi made some time ago on this, but I'm not sure which external drive I have it on, wish I can find it. Some builders/tuners I followed have noticed and have advocated just using a mild dome or the combination of flat pistons and milling the head slightly to bump compression to make power but still have resistance to detonation and can pull under high load, they say it just requires tuning out the part throttle pingies

Would advancing intake by just one tooth be worth accessing on a dyno Matt? Also is the exhaust cam opening further than intake in terms of lift?

at what lift did you measure opening from ? 1mm ?
@MattBerrymotorsport
@MattBerrymotorsport 4 жыл бұрын
I measured it by eye lol I'd need a dial gauge to measure it at a specific lift. This test was just so we could see visual valve clearance and not for exact numbers.

Can you also advance intake cams on 4efte engine? Or is it only good on 4efe? Nice vids btw
@MattBerrymotorsport
@MattBerrymotorsport 4 жыл бұрын
You can but the problem is once you get valve overlap (when the inake and exhaust valves are open at the same time) in a turbo application it doesn't work well. You end up with higher exhaust temps from the wasted unburned fuel going out the exhaust and the engine runs less efficient. If you just move the cam belt pulley instead, this can advance or retard BOTH cams evenly. Problem is when you advance both camshafts you get better low end power but top end suffers. When you retard both camshafts you will lose low end torque but gain some in the top end. But where Toyota have set them gives you the best of both choices. If you have a fairly small turbo id just leave the cams where they are :)

@@MattBerrymotorsport my car is build for drag racing here's my mods in the engine -stock internals -ct12a turbo (the big one) -front mount intercooler -ramhorn turbo manifold -aem fic -350lp fuel pump What do you advice on my build? Do i retard the belt or advance it? And by how much
@MattBerrymotorsport
@MattBerrymotorsport 4 жыл бұрын
@@rje1407 that's already quite a small turbo. Will be pretty zippy but the rear housing won't flow enough in the top end meaning you won't get very high mph at the track, maybe around 90-100 over the finish line and maybe a low 14 second pass. Advancing the cams will make that mph even slower but it will probably improve the time a little bit. I'd be looking for a larger turbo like a tdo4. One of my other starlets ran a 13.0 at 105 mph using a stock engine and similar mods to yours. I also had 15x8 drag slicks which helped a lot. This was on with the stock cam timing. If you don't want to change turbo i highly recommend spending the money on a set of drag slicks and converting to e85. This will help a lot :)
