I just transplanted 60 alpine strawberry plants into GreenStalk towers, and gave the left over plants (2 months old) to my mother. She is transplanting the remaining alpine strawberry plants into her container garden, a mix of Red Wonder, White Soul, and Alexandria.

I can't wait. I will be starting one GreenStalk tower this year. If it goes well, I will start a few more, waiting for a great sale like the St. Patricks day sale was this year (I was so very tempted). Looking forward to doing greens, herbs, and strawberries in it. Radishes and spring onions. So many ideas. I guess it's a good day when you have to scale back some ideas and plans. It's better than not having hope. Been there for a long time. Coming out of it in fits and starts. Thanks for sharing the knowledge, skills, and encouragement with us, Gary!

Great timing and thanks for your advice! 👍💚🌱 I just started my first strawberry seeds (Alpine red and white) 4 weeks ago. I gave them a good start by soaking them overnight in cold chamomile tea. So they germinated pretty quickly. I got about 30 plants so far. Now the first have been getting their first real leafs for about a week. Ofcourse they are still really tiny but growing well with a high germination rate. I'll give them some more weeks before i pot them up. 😊🍓

You are so correct. Lowe's has them for almost $5. I feel they have at least doubled in the last couple years. I wish I had separated mine that were in a container. I've decided to add hanging baskets this year as I'm running out of growing room.

@Angela Raum, I like the idea of growing strawberries in a hanging basket. Thanks for the reminder. I bought a very big (and very expensive) one years ago. I didn't know how to grow things well then and I only had it for the one season. It would have been so much better to do it this way. But the plants sere stunning and had a lot of fruit. I hope your baskets are successful for you this season and many more to come. 🍓🍓

Hi Gary, thank you for your help. The funny thing about strawberries is it one of the very few instances where seed selection vs live plants are flipped. You really have to hunt for strawberry seed types, where as you can find so many live plant varieties. This is why my first strawberry tower from Green Stalk , was planted with live plants. It was pricey but I needed plants for zone 9 . I am a big fan of Seascapes.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks so much. So the LED lights I talk about are very very cool. The wont heat up a house. If the greenhouse gets cold it would slow germination but as long as it doesnt freeze in there you can grow. You probably dont need lights. You can also use a heat mat outside. I have to add a funny story.. I started some Proven Winners Berried Treasure strawberries in wet paper towels (after sitting in my freezer for a couple of months) in a tiny zip lock bag, and they sprouted in about 3-4 days. I carefully dropped them on to my seed starting mix, and they are taking off just fine. It was kind of hard to drop them because the wet, barely sprouted seeds wanted to stick to my fingers. So, I went to plant a couple more trays that I didn't germinate in wet paper towels. Figured it would be easier to drop dry seeds onto the seed starting mix. Well, I made the mistake of exhaling, and the 1 packet of seeds that I had in the palm of my had blew onto my carpet, never to be seen again. So I tried another packet (only 15 seeds in one of those packets), held my breath and dropped the dry seeds on to the starting mix. 8 days later, not one of these has sprouted. My lessons learned.. :)
@christianerardt37052 жыл бұрын
🙈 oh no, that sounds really horrible. The dry seeds might just need a little more time. But maybe you could try to get a strawberry carpet by watering it? 😉

Will you get strawberries the first year?
@bonnies56512 жыл бұрын
It depends on the strawberry variety and when you start them. June-bearing probably won’t. Some day-neutral varieties will produce a few berries in the late-summer/fall if you start them early enough.

If the grow lights are intense enough do they need to be hardened off to the sunlight? I use a 300W LED panel for seed starting, it's probably not as efficient as your setup but its repurposed. It's quite intense light so I keep it 24-30" above the germinating seeds per user manual, 18-24" for seedlings. For example, it's so bright I wear sunglasses when looking at my seedlings. Would I still need to harden them off? Inside my "grow chamber" aka wardrobe I think it's about 75F, and at home the nights get to about 45-50F. Is temperature delta important?

You can if they are all in the same flat for sure. I have them mixed with other plants. The light also adds warmth that can help. And you dont want to miss germination so as soon as you see 1 pop, get them under the lights Please subscribe as it really helps me & please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for your fabric pots, fall & spring seeds, seed starting supplies, peppermint oil, neem oil, TRG merchandise, and more at www.therustedgarden.com As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases.
