I took a chance and started peas indoors despite the package instructions. I could have direct-sown (California 9b) but I thought they would germinate more quickly inside. I actually used your smaller cells. I was worried about my renegade ways. After 3 weeks, I took them outside to plant them. The mix fell apart. The roots were bare. I touched them all kinds. I put them in the ground. They are absolutely fine. They're doing great.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
They are hardy. Years ago information said dont start indoors. I was like why. They can take abuse. California is very nurturing for peas. Going into colder areas you also get temp change shock, so a little more gentler can helps but as you demonstrated they can take it. The bigger cells do give them more space for more root growth and such. The key is not to have them break pulling them out of the container. I mean really break. Just tucked in my pea transplants into a few cozy corners today. Going to put more in starters. For me, this is the best way to do most of my plants, including peas. They transplant terrifically. I’ll go ahead and add something I also do which I see no one else doing. I do the same thing with my carrots! I know people say they don’t transplant well, but mine do. I’m gentle with them and do it a certain way, but it works great!

When you transplant your carrots do you put them in the ground? I am just starting my garden this year and have started some seeds. I am not going to be able to plant much at all in the ground. Am going to use buckets and pots but am open to any good ideas for container transplanting, especially for the root veggies.
@ivahihopeful2 жыл бұрын
@@barbararichmond6522 totes and pools ... I use recycled mushroom containers from the grocery store (with drainage poked) to make little planting beds in fine seed starting mix. When carrots get about an inch or two tall, I use water to gently tease the roots apart or sometimes gentle thumping on the root ball works to break them apart. I use soil mix to plant them out, in which are no big chunks, amended with things like vermiculite and perlite, and I plant them in either 18 gallon storage totes or kiddie pools, depending on carrot length, which have drainage holes. I just use my hand to reach down into the soil and push it over, creating a little pocket. I put each plant in, then close soil back around it at about the level it was already growing. I space them a few inches apart, like the pattern on a number five dice, 6 rows of three or 5 rows of four in a tote. They look like they were sown there. Everything I grow, I start inside because that’s the only thing that works due to torrential rains and other factors. Let me know if I can help. It works for me. We’ve been eating perfect carrots using this method, once I figured out the best time to plant them.
@ivahihopeful2 жыл бұрын
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I usually sow them in a mushroom tray, but I have also, this season, done some in cells. My six packs have big holes at the bottom that make it easy to push them out without harming the roots. I hope when you try yours they do well.

@@karthik_sivakumar I don’t think I got mine in until late March or even April last year. This year, I’m going to try to do some winter sowing in 2 liter bottles in February and get them in my raised beds in the middle of March, then do a succession planting direct sow in late March. Gonna do more research, but those are my thoughts right now. Gary encourages me to experiment and it sounds like peas are one of the safest things to start early!

We live in zone 6b and start spring peas indoors, like you. Nearly 100% germination, vs 30% if you are lucky, starting them outside in April. The transplants mature much better before our increasingly hot summers arrive. We have better luck with direct seeding in August, as the soil is warm. Be generous with the water in August and September.

Its the cold and damp outside that rots peas so an inside germination of 2 weeks or so, really helps. As you mention August is better for that reason. First I love your channel and have ordered from your before. One comment: it’s tough when you have 5-10 videos on the same subject over the years to decide which one to use. I started my peas indoors this year but made a critical mistake: don’t use peat pots! I should have broken them up when transplanting because I’m pretty sure that’s why my peas are still small plants despite being in the ground here in New England. Lesson learned

I've been saving paper towels rolls and toilet paper rolls, then cutting them in half and towl rolls to match. Is that ok to use to start seeds?
@yeevita2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I cut a slit on one side, to make it easier for the plant to expand if I plant the whole thing in the soil, or to remove the seedling if I am just planting the seedling. I have also taken to folding the rolls, so they make a square instead of circle. They fit better in my outer containers as squares. Just crush them flat, open, then crush them flat again and fold as square. I don't even bother folding a bottom like I used to. I just use a bigger container, containing a bunch of rolls.

@@william7268 Ok, that’s good. You would need to compost the manure in the elements for a year before you use it, or put it at the bottom of a deep bed and cover it with a lot of soil so the roots of the plants don’t touch it. Otherwise, it will burn the plants, it’s too concentrated. If you can get rabbit manure, you can use that straight and fresh. Happy gardening!

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I had heard the shoots were good in salads… but didn’t want to waste them if I didn’t care for them. Double win if I can have them for both. Thanks for replying.

Hi, I have a question, I have 2 female zucchini flowers that opened 2 days ago, there was no male flower to hand pollinate them, I feel the male flower may open tomorrow, can I still hand polinate female flowers after 3 days? Does it produce fruit?

They should be fine. I have some plants that overwintered and am also starting new ones. The older plants have put on tons of flowers and even produced a few peas. They survived my zone 8b fine and looks like they will have lots of peas once the weather warms up. I try to shake them periodically, just in case, since it is not consistently warm enough for full insect activity, though I have seen a few flies and solitary bees on warmer days. Once it gets too warm for them, I eat the whole plant, or at least the tender leaves and ends.
