One point that may help all, is: The treads in a fastener do not carry the same loads. The first thread carries almost a third of the load and the next less, until you come up to about thread #7. After that the treads are almost worthless. This really comes in handy when contemplating the load values in a shear nut vs. full load (AN365). Food for thought. Refinements on this statement are most certainly appreciated. Educate us.

What about using a regular nut coupled with Nord-lock washers?
@dan_der_fliegerАй бұрын
On the argument about reusing nylock nuts: You should definitely follow A/C 43.13 as noted here. But notice that the circular doesn't list nuts smaller than 7/16", which are the majority of the bolts/nuts on homebuilt aircraft - 3/16" and 1/4" are both very common. Since no torque values are listed for those bolt sizes, you should not reuse those nuts. "DO NOT reuse ... if the nut cannot meet the minimum prevailing torque values. (See table 7-2)" How can you meet the minimum prevailing value in table 7-2 if it's not listed? You can't. You should replace those nuts. They're only about $0.25 each, so why not just replace them? Your life is worth more than the $5 you'll spend in replacement nuts in the lifetime of your airplane.

Hi sir, Thanks for sharing your knowledge on suitable nuts. Do you have an opinion on the Fujilock nut? It's for a car application. I believe they will fit between the Nyloc and the AN363 on the aspect of not being to though on the threads making them more suitable to be used multiple times? What do you think.

Any disadvantages to the MS21042 or applications that it shouldn't be used for?
@alexvonhoene13914 жыл бұрын
They are more expensive than other kinds of locknuts, more damaging to threads than nylocks, and cannot be reused.

Is it ok to use cadmium plating in aircrafts? Rohs don't allow use of Cadmium or is aircraft accpetion
@edstoro38832 жыл бұрын
The cad plating is serving two purposes. First it is for corrosion protection. Second it is a lubricant. Yeah, no kidding. do not think of it as a grease/oil but it does serve a purpose of the inner-outer threads sliding over each other.

Do MS21042 damage thread the same way as AN363? thanks
@markthompson86563 жыл бұрын
I believe they do. after taking off about a hundred of these on a jet engine some were so loose once I boke the torque I could unscrew them with my fingers. but most I had to use socket wrench all the way off. Mind you these particular bolts have been removed maybe a hundred times. as this engine is one we practice on disassembly on.
