How To Select Grass Seed For Your Fescue Lawn

Today I will tell you how to choose what seed to use and explain what blue tag seed certification is!

I did the same thing. Just overseeded zone 3 of 5 of my 2 acre property. Bonfire (finer texture and all around good disease/drought protection), Xanadu (Dark color good disease/drought protection), Titanium GLS (all around good product). I added KBG Blue Bank due to it being more aggressive spread for a compact midnight type kbg. Was looking at Mazama but it takes some babying, it’s not a compact midnight type but it is dark and very aggressive for recovery. After midnight wasn’t aggressive enough for what I wanted out of a KGB blend with my fescue. However, I like my fescue cut at 2.25 year around. All the Tttf you have are hardy and well selected

I just tell you lol my room I keep my stuff in is full full 🤣🤣 I store my seed bags and all in plastic tubs in my house so it stays room temperature. In my experience I’ve had good germination 3 years after the sell by date but that’s a crap shoot! It all loses some germination every year could be a very small amount and one year then boom none hardly germinates! I would say your safe 2 years after the sell by date as long as you keep it in a climate controlled room where there’s no light (tubs) and no moisture gets to it!

I bought my seed from Twin City seed company. Which I used 25% DAYBREAK TURF-TYPE TALL FESCUE 25% 4TH MILLENNIUM SRP TURF-TYPE TALL FESCUE, 25% VALSETZ TURF-TYPE TALL FESCUE,25% XANADU TURF-TYPE TALL FESCUE. I live In Missouri and is one of the toughest aera to grow grass. This year we had a lot of rain and my lawn is doing great.

Definitely never use the stuff from big box stores. I made that mistake starting out and then my yard got full or poa triv and I had to start over again with the nice stuff

Thats interesting. I ordered a 10lb bag of Snapback RR Tall Fescue Blend from United Seeds and I can't tell if there is a Lot# on the bag. On the bottom corner it just says "LT21-72PC" and the blue tag LOT# says "SSFB-24_1-10#". My spring overseed failed due to very hot temperatures early in the season this year :(

One more question for the night. For the NTEP ratings, are you looking at just the top "TURFGRASS QUALITY RATINGS" for your area or are you taking other ratings in to account for making your seed decisions? I've been going down this rabbit hole and it gets deep pretty quick. I'm not entirely sure where the line of diminishing returns begins when taking multiple ratings in to account.

I look at other factors also as far as disease and color and leaf texture try to find the best of all them for my area.

When you do the mixing, how do you actually mix the seed to ensure a good blend of all the cultivars you are combining?

I pour them in individual buckets then pour a little from each buck into a large tub and mix them by hand and keep doing that then I take a drill with a paint stirrer and mix it more once it’s all in the tub. I only mix 50 pound batch’s and it’s batch has it’s on tub.

Absolutely great video! I never thought of buying straight from the factory and mixing my own. What sites do you use to buy from the factory? I bought a bag of Twin City Seeds Resilience TTTF for my overseeding this year. Real happy to hear you liked 4th Millennium, Daybreak, and Xanadu. Any thoughts on Valsetz (their fourth seed type in the bag)?

Do you always overseed? Do you always aerate every fall? I haven’t aerated in two years, but starting to wonder if I should be aerating every year. Lawn is in good condition but starting to wonder if I should always be introducing new cultivars. Always doing a light rake and aerate for example. Thanks!

I have always overseed a small amount like 2 to 3 pounds per 1000 just to introduce new grass. I aerate spring and fall

Do you have a link to the most current ntep results. I plan to do a light overseed after i dethatch with either gci cool blue, super turf ii or super turf i and mix in some 365ss. My last year's overseed was 95/7 but i want more kbg.

Will over seeding KBG into an already established thick fescue lawn work out? Meaning, will it germinate and come in without the existing turf out competing it?

Should do fine many folks have done it. Got to have seed to soil contact of course! I’m only doing 10% kbg rest will be fescue. No reason why it shouldn’t come up fescue comes up every year. Pete done this several years ago and has probably 40% kbg in his lawn along with fescue and rye now.

Man that makes sense now. For 2 years (2020 & 2021) I overseeded my front yard with JG Fall Magic, but used another seed in my back yard. I have poa trib and poa Annua only in my front yard and absolutely none in the back yard. I bought into the hype of “Fall Magic” given it was, well, Fall😂 I have learned so much since then, and just want to thank @Primetime_Fescue and the folks he mentioned in his video for their honest advice and education - I have learned so much and appreciate you!! Get your seed right!! Doing the mixing yourself is going to yield the best of the best, but if you can’t, there are some great options aside from JG.

Well I typically only do 2 to 3 but this year it’s gonna be atleast 4 to 5! You gotta think and this is my opinion if you put down 4 pounds per 1k probably only 2 pounds maybe 3 are actually gonna. One up and make it being it’s not a bare dirt situation and even in bare first I would date to day you probably only get half to 3/4 to come up and live imo

@@Primetime_Fescue you point out the truth...and its complete BS. they should pull more of a sample than that silly tiny amount. when tankers deliver chemical to manufacturers...they pull a large sample---and thats liquid--to verify what they are getting. dont hesitate on the KBG...its nice turf...and it does brown up in 95f and up...but it comes back....and it really pretty turf
