Another great vid. Curious, which script of yours won the Nicholl? Also, how much attention did that give you from the industry?
@worddancer-howtowriteascre91447 жыл бұрын
NUDE AND NAKED won the the Nicholl -- you will get TONS of attention from winning that - your phone will ring off the hook, but I already had an agent n manager before winning that by using a coverage service (like the ones here, but the one I used isn't in biz anymore).
@rl18007 жыл бұрын
Just curious, did you enter your Nicholl script in any other contests? Have you ever had a script make the finals of one contest and not even crack the quarters of another? Sometimes the judging seems so random.
@worddancer-howtowriteascre91447 жыл бұрын
I only entered the Nicholl-winning script in one other tiny contest Moondance and it didn't do anything. Yes, I've had scripts do very well in one competition and not do anything in another. Judging is very subjective.

No, that is for a job. They will not look at treatments. No one looks at treatments - only full scripts.
@turkishveganhuman56746 жыл бұрын
Word Dancer - How to write a screenplay 1- What job? :) 2- But they look first a sinopsis, look a plot summary, right? Because thousands scripts sending to them. I think they should tell me "hey thats a interesting sinopsis, interesting idea, so why your script send to us??" You know? I want this process :) Because I dont write script yet. I dont want to write a big script for nothing. I have 25 story and 25 sinopsis and treatment. It would be very painful to write 25 scripts for nothing. But if the producers say, "hey we like some synopsis, you write us the script of these stories" and then it's cheerful and logical for me to write a script. :/
@worddancer-howtowriteascre91446 жыл бұрын
You gave me a link to a job opening at Netflix. Producers, managers agents SOMETIMES (not all will take email queries) look at loglines for scripts that are ALREADY WRITTEN. If they like the logline, they will read the script. You are asking them to give you free feedback on your ideas and free market research -- they don't have time and don't offer that service. And most people talk about writing and never do it. So they are only going to deal with writers. Think of it another way - if you were starting a business, would you go to an attorney and expect him to look over your business proposal for free and tell you it's a good idea with the promise that if you get it going you will use him as your attorney? He would go out of business spending all his time looking at business proposals and MAYBE 1% will actually get off the ground and be a successful business that would hire him. You can't expect people to put more effort into your projects than you. If you don't feel you have an idea worth spending the time to write the script, they aren't going to invest the time giving you feedback. You don't need to write 25. Pick the one you are the most passionate about and write it. If you want to do market research, as friends if they like the idea. Ask strangers when you are standing in line for coffee if they like the idea. Movies are meant for a mass audience so they need to have wide appeal. Ask anyone you come in contact with what they think of your idea. People like to give their opinion - they will give it. Ask 20 people what they think of your idea and you will get great feedback. If it's positive, write that idea. I will be doing a video on this soon:)

Specscout and the blacklist are paid services, they read your script, create a query letter for the script, and they also rank it through 3 readers from those websites. A "featured" script is the one that gets ranked by them with a 75+ (from 0 to 100) if they rank your script with a 75 or more, then they show it to producers and companies and anybody on "the other side" that´s looking for a good spec script. They also give you a 10 page analisys on your script, where they tell you how to make it better, or why it didn´t work, etc.

Very informative video, thank you. What about copywriting scripts? And should you copywrite every draft? Thanks
@BigDaddyJinx Жыл бұрын
Copyright your final, polished script, if you're going to register anything. Copyright itself is established when your stuff is in a tangible medium. So that means, once your draft is completed, it's already under copyright as it's a fixed medium. It's not an idea or concept, it's a tangible work. No need to register. Registration with a copyright office merely affords you something that is irrefutable as it's a matter of public record now, so if you sued and won you'd get damages and fees paid for (generally speaking). You can still sue and win without a registered copyright BUT there are a lot of challenges to face as it now becomes a game of he said/she said more or less when proving it's actually your work. So remember, your works are already protected by copyright once completed and no registration is required. If you were ever worried about someone stealing your works, best to register it formally and have it on record (be sure you review the records for another work similar to yours before you do because your "original" idea may have already been registered by someone else previously - it happens). Your final polished draft should be the one you register formally.
@jimbogreen8481 Жыл бұрын

I appreciate constructive criticism and they were correct. but it does cost a lot more to have them write just a few lines. Would you put a basic draft in for a contest, or something more complex like geared towards a production draft? Like, would a production draft be judged as more creative?..
@worddancer-howtowriteascre91447 жыл бұрын
+Creepy Concept Films Production drafts (like with scene numbers, excessive camera angles, lots of “smash cut to:” etc. ) should never be entered in contests. All that extra stuff will annoy the reader and the writer will be judged as more amateurish for not knowing a production draft shouldn’t be submitted. If your screenplay is absolutely amazing it could still make it through- it won’t be turned down just because of that, but the second the reader opens it and sees scene numbers- they won’t expect great things and you will have to overcome that first impression.

Thank you for this excellent video. I have to wonder, as a new writer, I question how many of these are really just a money grab, wherein they don't really do much other than take your money with a promised "read" and make huge money doing this. I suppose I have to do a lot of research and cross-checking to establish which ones are truly effective, vs ones that are not.
@worddancer-howtowriteascre91445 жыл бұрын
These companies WANT to find something great that they can champion so they DO have success stories:) As always, do your research. And keep in mind around 2% of scripts get recommends as a rule. That means most scripts that are submitted will get a read and feedback and not move forward. The material has to be ready.

Hi, "Word Dancer", thank you so much for offering such powerful advices to all of us. I'd like to ask you a couple of questions if you don't mind. 1) I have 2 screenplays done- one is for a short and the other one for a feature. - Now,, I got some producer interested in my short over a draft I sent through and she'd like to read more of it. As a beginner, I think it's normal to be worried about the idea of your HARD WORK being stolen or getting in the wrong hands. I haven't met this producer in person yet and all I know is that she works for local film production. What would be your opinion regarding this? 2) I'm about to send those projects over a bunch of productions and contests. I DO NOT have writing experience from school, all I do is watching tutorials and try to use some hints to make the screenplay look professional. Now, Is this going to be an issue regarding the representation/ quality of the story? Thank you again for your time, Valentino

Amazing videos! Ive seen in a video a tip of a website where you can post your script and other amateur scriptwriters can read them. Do you know what website that is?

I'm curious... when you won the Nichol how many rewrites did it take before you submitted that script which won it? Also, prior to submitting, did you already know people in the industry and were you always a script writer?

I was a nobody and knew no one in Hollywood. Rewrite? Probably around 20 - not kidding. My video Honor Your Muse tells more of my story.
