Thanks Lyn for another excellent video. I've recently separated a couple of clusters of Myrtillocactus Geometrizans but I only left them a week before watering them, I suspect this was a bit too soon so I hope they survive. I'm plucking up the courage to do the same with a cluster of Stetsonia - this video has given me more confidence to tackle it given how long and sharp its spines are! I understand it has more sensitive roots, so I'll leave watering until April for those.

Dear Lyn, why do some nurseries have plants in clusters like this? Do some cacti just grow that way? Can they grow healthy to their thickest potential even if they are clustered?
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
I think its because a lot of them are seed grown and they have a few seedlings all planted together in the one pot, the problem is when they grow larger these spiny guys can grow into each other and the spines can stab into the other cacti, its better if these very spiny ones can be separated individually and they have abetter chance of growing nice and large, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX

The cactus I have I kinda stacked on top of each other, different species. How do I separate stacked cactus?
@desertplantsofavalon6 ай бұрын
Hi there, it sounds like you have cacti that have been grafted, some grafted cacti like the colourful 'red and yellow' Gymnocalycium cacti have to stay grafted due to them needed a grafting stock plant to survive because they lack the chlorophyll, if the cacti you have stacked are all green and not red or yellow coloured the its possible to de graft them and re root them individually but it can be a difficult process, some cacti that are slow growing or hard to grow on their own roots are best left grafted, thanks so much for watching and wishing you a wonderful plant powered Tuesday XXXX

If it was really badly rooted together would you use a knife?
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
Hi Heather :-D yes if the roots are all really rooted together into a knot I would cut the roots with a knife or pruning shears and then let the cacti sit unpotted for 24 hours to let the cut parts of the roots 'callus' over before potting them up, and I would use only dry soil to pot them up in and wait a little bit longer until watering again around 2-3 weeks to be on the safe side, thanks so much Heather for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a brilliant Monday today XXXX

I have a tall cactus. Can you separate, or cut
@desertplantsofavalon2 ай бұрын
Hi Renee, with tall cacti you can cut them to propagate them, let the bottom of the cut part dry fully for at least a month before planting, if the tall cactus is wider than 2 inches its best to leave the cutting to dry for about 2 months before planting, once planted don't water until next spring, thanks so much for watching and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Friday XXXX
