I Googled 'how to maintain a Zebco 202 reel' and brought up this video with a still of 3 different years of 202 reels. When I looked closely, I realized I have all three of them. One I got 48 years ago on my 9th birthday, one I bought for a girlfriend to use around '94 and one I found somewhere. Now to get them all functional again.

I just acquired one of these reels. I took it apart, cleaned it, and put it back together with grease and oil. When I was done the cast button would not depress for casting. I watched your video to make sure I didn't do something wrong. I did exactly as you did but the cast button did not depress... So I took it apart again. And realized that the gear that is on the shaft with spring needed to move on the shaft to work properly. I finally got it loose with some WD40 cleaned it up regreased the parts, put it back together, and now it works as it should. Thought this might help someone else with the same problem. I liked your video, it helped me know I was not doing anything wrong and that I didn't have any missing parts.

Doing well until the little rocker thing fell out. Thank you for showing where it belongs and works. Also for showing how to grease.

I enjoy your videos, they really helped me out a lot, I bought 4 vintage Zebco 202s last fall, and a 404. Got them all with the rods for $20! I followed your videos, disassembled and cleaned, oiled, greased, them, added new string, and they worked perfectly!! Main issue with them was the old grease had hardened up, and they were grimy. I've already fished with 3 or the 202s love them! Thank you so much for you informative videos!

@OutFishing13Matthew2 жыл бұрын
In this video I show the repair on the old 202 you are referring too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYvIY2CrgZ6qisk The top just screws off. One trick I have found is to put it in the freezer. That tends to shrink things. Try for a couple hours and then take it out and screw it off. Remember "Lefty Loosy" Or put it under some hot tap water for a few minutes. See it that will loosen what ever is in those threads.

Good video. I just got a 202 was trying to make it work. Tore it apart and found a real birds nest ..somehow that half moon thing fell out with out me seeing it Took me awhile to figure out where its went. And which direction.lol. However that little spring that kicks it back down above the spool is awol. Do you know where I can find one or make one? I've got 12 grandkids and Im breaking them in on spin casters. They are my favorite for fishing off a canoe or kayak. Got this one at a flea market. Thanks for the video's.
@OutFishing13Matthew2 жыл бұрын
You'd have to get a parts reel for that 202. No parts are sold anymore. The new 202 is a nice little reels and for less than $10 a great starter for kids.

@@OutFishing13Matthew I found three springs in a worn out co2 detector. They raise these little red tabs up blocking the replacement of the door for the batteries. They are perfect. I was going to try a safety pen next. I also found out that when you first respool fresh line on the 202 you start with a lot of friction on the line so when you snag on a fish or logs the tension doesn't bury the line in itself. The reel casts beautiful. By the way I used some marine wheel bearing grease as I had nothing else. will replace it later. Thanks again.
@OutFishing13Matthew2 жыл бұрын
@@rickturner2757 That is neat you are finding something to replace the drag spring with. For just the gears, I like the marine bearing grease. It is too sticky and thick for other things though. Thanks again for sharing your story on getting some reels resurrected.

Can’t get my push button to work to cast. Dose the shaft with the spring have to slide through the main shaft where the pinion gear is?
@OutFishing13Matthew3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that shaft will slide though the pinion gear. Something must be frozen up. Try WD40

Hmm. Make sure the Spinner cone is not binding up on you. Check that very carefully. I don't think you broke anything. Something didn't go back together quite right.

Hi Matthew, Thanks for these videos! I have 3 Zebco reels. I took my 202 apart and have cleaned it. It was bad. However, on reassembly, I cannot get the thumb button to push in. I have watched the video several times but cannot seem to find the problem. The little mechanism inside the spinner with the rounded teeth moves ok/not stuck. The spinner/teeth are fully seated and underneath the drag adjustment plate and I can turn it and get a small clicking noise from the drag. With the nut on the shaft, it does not appear to have any play, back towards the button. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help. Pete
@OutFishing13Matthew4 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, make sure the spinner cone is seated all the way onto the shaft. I bet it isn't. Take off the front cover and loosen the spinner cone nut. The turn the spinner until it seats all the way down on the shaft. Then tighten the nut.

Hey Matthew! Great video with lots of detail! I didn't realize there were so many places to grease! You have a new subscriber. I recently inherited my dads fishing equipment including many old Zebco's that bring back a lot of great memories. Some of these I remember using myself over 40 years ago! But one of these reels is one of the original Popeil Pocket Fisherman. Have you had any experience with these? It seems to work great except for the drag which is a "star" type next to the crank handle. The star spins just fine and does tighten up. It just doesn't have any affect on the line. I can't pull any out. I have removed the star, the crush washer that goes on the inside of the star, and the little plastic spacer that goes between the crush washer and the body of the reel, thinking that it is the plastic spacer that provides the drag. But it still will not allow me to pull line back off the reel. It must be something internal. As I understand it, some of the internals are from 1960's Zebco reels. As I watched your video it does indeed look like some of the internal parts are from a 202. Perhaps you or a viewer can help me figure this out. In the meantime I hope you get your hands on one of these as I would love to see a full service on one of these great little reels. Thanks!

I have this exact reel, and even after taking it apart, I just can’t get it to work. When reeling in, the line tightens down on itself on the spool, then on the next cast it won’t let the line out. Very frustrating
@OutFishing13Matthew4 жыл бұрын
Take all the line off and put it back on. When you do, hold it with your finger so it is tight all the way. What is happening is the line on the spool is too loose and when you wind in, it digs to far into the line on there.

@Outfishing13 quick question : I followed your tutorial, using Lucas oil grease and 3 in 1 oil to all critical components, as well as all new 8 pound test line. The action works great, except for the cast where it catches automatically after letting out only about 10 feet of line or so. Any idea what would be making it catch so early? Thanks again for the excellent tutorial!
@OutFishing13Matthew4 жыл бұрын
A couple thoughts. How much line is on the spool? If the line is about out ot doesn't cast well. Make sure the spool is filled to about 1/8 inch from the top of the spool, no more. The line is old and has too much memory in it. Respool it with 10# mono.
