How to service the lower legs on your Fox FIT suspension fork

If you’re lucky enough to have a Fox fork bolted to the front of your bike then you’ll want to take care of it. This means keeping up to date with the servicing requirements and the thing you’ll need to do most often is a lower leg service. It won’t replace a periodic full strip-down (Fox recommends 125 hours/annually), but it will clean the worst of the crap out, keep the seals running in fresh lube and eradicate any air that has built up in the lower legs. Hence, your fork will instantly feel amazing, you’ll save some beer credits and you’ll be filled with an overwhelming sense of smugness.
If you have a non-FIT (open bath) Fox fork then the procedure is slightly more involved and you’ll have to travel way back to the March 2009 issue for the lowdown. For this service you’ll be getting hold of the latest wiper seals and oil that Fox has developed. Even better news is that thanks to those cunning Fox technicians you’ll benefit from lower prices too. The new Gold oil satisfies both the Midas and Scrooge within you by coming in at £11.48 (mojostore.co.uk), which is a good few quid cheaper than the older green stuff. One final thing before you start: make sure you know the oil bath volumes for your fork - you can find them at service.foxracingshox.com, or if you get stuck you can pick the brains of the esteemed team at
mojo.co.uk

Can you do a video of a "full strip down."? Would like to see a complete fork servicing and see what's involved in the process.

The comment about putting the nuts back on with the fork fully compressed is wrong, at least on recent forks. I made that mistake when I serviced my 2018 Fox 34 recently and the vaccuum created in the lowers when they extended effectively became a second negative spring, which meant the fork was bottoming out even with maximum pressure in the air chamber. It also would not extend all the way to full travel. I burped the lowers with a sharpened zip tie stuck between the seals and the stanchion and it immediately starting working properly again. These forks are designed to have air in the lowers. I highly doubt the fork in the video was working properly after it was reinstalled. Note that you actually don't even need to remove the air from the air chamber to do this service. You're never opening that up so it doesn't matter if it's pressurized. Check out one of the videos from Fox themselves to see the correct procedure for this service.

You are definitely correct my friend! Ive been servicing forks for awhile now. This video is wrong. Even to what he did to one of his video on rockshox fork.

I do not use oil on the seals because you risk them popping out. I wet them in alcohol and push them in.

Is it Gold 20WT which you put into the lower legs ? I thought Fox Green 10WT would be needed instead. Can you clarify ?

It depends on the model of the fork... you can look at the Fox website the recommended suspension oil for each

Eric Perre 10 wt (green) is for the older forks.

Newer fox forks run 20wt gold. As everyone else has said check the fox website. The fit4 damper uses the 20wt gold in air and damper sides where as the grip damper uses a 5wt Teflon in its damper side I believe

Is it necessary to release the pressure for a lower leg service? Your not going into the air spring at all. And leaving the pressure in will prevent suck down from happening when you reinstall the stanchions back into the lowers

Thanks, I appreciate the video. Tip: do NOT lubricate the seals upon installation. Yes, it eases installation but when pressurized the seal will inevitably pop out, thus FUBAR'ing your fresh overhaul and making you wash and repeat FFS.

Great video. Can I suggest never using a hammer on the socket to free the lower adjustment knobs from the lowers. This puts a lot of undue stress on the nut head and potentially on the nut threads. Its a good way to strip or damage threads. Use something of a soft metal like copper or wood/plastic.

MyRose911 FOx has a few different types of forks, the most common are Float's and Talas's, 32mm,34mm, and 36mm, These measurements measure the thickness of each stanchion (The shiny part of the fork) Fox also has different series, Factory, Performace, and Elite performance series. (factory being the highest) you also have various measurements of 'travel' which is how much the fork can go up and down. they go from 100mm to 180mm. One last thing is the type of cartridge or damper system you've got. Don't want to mix these up because they use different oils. 'FIT' dampers are the newer dampers on newer forks. I think 2013 up. " open bath" are the older style one's. FIT dampers use fox gold oil, and open bath use fox red oil. So hopefully on your fork, you can find these hints stuck as stickers around the fork. Mine says "FLOAT" on the bridge, and '34' on the sides of the fork. for travel, you'll have to make sure your fork is pumped up, and you can manually measure the travel height worse case.
