So real weight on a 750Wh battery is going to be 23kg and with range extender 24kg. The tradeoff just isn't worth it to have such a small battery and still weighs maybe 21kg. Full power needs full battery. 750Wh minimum. Would prefer 800Wh and a range extender option. Which I guess this bike might have as it is gen 5.

The bikes should be weighed with the tires that come with them. Otherwise, just strip all the components and just weigh the frame. 🤦🏼♂️

We weighed them stock and with the control tyres. Plenty of brands put paper-thin tyres on the their SL e-bikes to hit a nice low weight on the scales, but take them onto the trails and the flat at the first sight of a rock. This is one of the reasons for making a load of extra work for ourselves.

Just makes me wish Whyte hadn't given up developing regular trail and enduro bikes and gone 'all in' on their ebike range. A new T-160 would have been mint, the old one's long in the tooth in terms of appearance even if it rides great

Every CX motor and Fox 36 etc weigh the same, every time.. What would this "bike" weigh without the motor or batteries? If you provide details about the specific motor and battery weights we would be able to understand the build intention. The question that remains unanswered is bike weight, over and over again. It's the only way to judge the strength of the build and how it compares. Let's have a spread-sheet with component data or simply state the frame weight.?
@MBRmagazine2 күн бұрын
It’s a 4.7kg system weight (plus wiring and hardware) so let’s say 5kg. Which makes it a 15.8kg bike with 140mm travel (less the weight of a bottom bracket). I’d have to check but it’s probably category 4 rated.

So two batteries to charge, I simply couldn't be bothered, or I could have been with a Bosch 600wh batter plus the range extender, now that would be a worthy combination, as it is, no thanks.
@andymoss42853 күн бұрын
What does SL actually mean, Short lived ? Is a 400wh battery going to last 90minutes in Redlands at full power? Or are you going to have to constantly manage it? This bike vs the classic e160 full fat, which would you buy as your first e-bike, especially given the price difference….
@MBRmagazine3 күн бұрын
Ha! Obviously this bike isn’t going to be for everyone, but the decision to ship the bike with the range extender makes a lot of sense. 650wh potential capacity with the new CX motor is still a great proposition.

That’s with heavy tyres, pedals and the range extender though. The full and SL bikes have been getting closer and closer and I don’t think it’s as simple as being one or the other now. I don’t think Whyte are really pushing this as an “SL” to be honest.

Agreed! my Cannondale moterra SL is 46lbs with DD front and rear tires with cushcore and I don't consider it SL at that weight. My wife's Levo SL is 41 lbs which is more what I consider SL as my enduro/bike park bike is 39lbs, so her Levo SL is almost he same weight as a nicely kitted enduro rig. 49lbs for the Whyte with a 400wh battery doesn't seem all that SL to me either 🤷🏻♂️

I guess, just as conventional bike weights creep up, so do ebike weights. I know what I’d rather pedal around between a 17kg Enduro bike and a 20kg ebike though! 😂
@jordanmackay3568Күн бұрын
You sir are uneducated. I have a kenevo SL and it weighs 21kg. Bikes weights are a sham. Big travel requires strong parts and dh tires.
@Mockle073 күн бұрын
If that was a fully modular, removable internal battery with 400 or 625 options and the range extender, that may well be peak EMTB trail bike right now. As it is it’s still a compelling option - I don’t understand why ANYONE would buy the SX version other than price, given the great discounts on the older SX-equipped model right now. It’s a shame the Bosch battery architecture means you can’t drain the extender then remove it for when you are doing laps like you can with the TQ or Specialized, it seems a real miss to have to run them in a combined system. Great real world video too 👍🏻
@MBRmagazine3 күн бұрын
Cheers! With regards the range extender, other systems that let you drain it first give noticeably less power than combined systems.
@Mockle073 күн бұрын
@ I had heard that but never really had it explained. If you don’t have a range extender on a Levo SL for example, you get full power so are you saying that adding a range extender reduces available torque/power or are you talking about range? Presumably the latter, so the Bosch system is just a more efficient combined system? Either way, yet another compromise one way or another I guess - neither are a deal breaker for me, just annoyances. Like I said recently, we are so close to the perfect sweet spot it’s just spread across three or four bikes! 😂

Adding the range extender to the Levo SL won’t reduce power while you’re using the internal battery, but it will while using the range extender exclusively. Hope that makes sense?
