wow, looks like my old alvey. It had one handle missing too lol. Ansd my other handle broke so I fashioned a handle out of a piece o wood. Bought that reel and a rod second handwith winnings on the ponies when I was 13 (parents placed the bet for me, of course).

I don’t know what grade of stainless steel mine is made from, but it (650A) too is over 40 years old (traded a Winchester .22 in for it) and it’s never rusted - great reels.

Have a fibreglass alvey side cast reel. The spool has abrasion on the rim from the line feeding out I guess. Any ideas how I can smooth off the reel rim again. Thought some fine wet and dry sandpaper might work.

Take the back nut off, exposes a hollow shaft, leads to a grease hole for the spindle shaft. Can pack the cap nut with grease and lube during fishing. Just wind the cap nut on when needed. eg:sand ingress. Rinse in water,tighten cap. All good. My example is an old 700 surf champion.

Used to beach fish with sidecasters as a kid. Getting back into fishing in the tropics where I live now I thought I'd pick up an Alvey as another gun in the cabinet so to speak. Hardly ever see anyone rocking a sidecaster so I thought why not? I'll tell you why not! I don't remember them being so expensive! Good thing is I know I can pick up one of these "vintage" ones on ebay and with a quick going over it'll be good as new. Bulletproof design, a true modern classic.

2nd hand compared to what they want, rather get a few 2nd hand, from my new 2nd hand dealer who also fixes things that break on rods, BONUS! I have two Alvey reels, one is ancient, have a Photo of me holding it when I was maybe 5 years old, am not 44 so the reel is a descent age, will give it some TLC along with the one I picked up the other week, teach the wife how to cast and it will be.. Catch and cook, returning the Females to the sea and the smaller fish. So in a few years they might meet me again :)

If you have a look on the back and remove that cap It's full of grease I was wondering if you know if that's actually a reservoir, I have an engineering background and it looks like a lot of simple but very effective lubrication methods of many spindle ie wearing less rotation devices I've encountered over the years. When it comes to maintenance, you might just be able to undo the pack the back full of grease and put the cap back on, then, instead of wiping Gease away and pushing sand further in, you would be slowly pushing any sand out from the inside... would be worth investigating clearly you're into this like I am. I've had Alvey reels for years, but I use the newer graphite version and my dad uses the surf champion like what you have. I wouldn't use any other reel for the beach (it would be so embarrassing using an egg beater) 😝

*Remove the cap and pack it with Grease and then put the cap back on (potentially) but yeah worth looking into. Be cool to find out either way

Any advice on how too improve the side turning motion on the reels ? I've just picked up a nice Alvey model 35 and the back plate that has the function of tuning the spool sideways feels a bit tight its definitely not rust & I doubt its grit as its in good knick and very clean.

Sounds like you have a star drag Alvey, all my Alveys are straight center in type so no drag I use my parm as the drag on good fish. To fix you problem drop it into your local tackle shop and ask them to service it and point the problem out Iam shore its very simle to fix, Good luck and thanks for tuning in, Please subscribe to our channel and we load new clips every Friday. @12kabubi
@12kabubi 6 жыл бұрын
Use a good quality 'Ball Bearing' swivel between the main line and your leader line, also try to keep tension on the line whilst retrieving by running the line between two fingers. You don't have to but it will cast better next cast.

+fishinbite Thanks for your question The Alvey that I have owned for 25years + is a 650A, great reel. The penetrating spray that was featured was a cheap can I grab from a hardware, WD40 will do and even better for all fishing gear is INOX silicon spray. There is a grease cap on that particular reel. Remove it and fill with Alvey reel grease. When screwed back on it forces grease through the centre shaft and into reel workings.

Possibly the only person I've come across that has difficulty using an Alvey lol. Pretty much all you see on the beaches of the Northern Rivers, and if they have an eggbeater they're probably a tourist or new to the sport. How do you go with your shoelaces John? Or do you stick to slip-ons:)
