I was only 16 and worked in a hardware store as a messenger boy in Cairns Qld about 1952. Every afternoon on the way home from work I walked past a tackle shop and in the window was, what I thought was the world’s most beautiful fishing rod with a dark red Bakelite Alvey Reel, the rod was made of wood and varnished, and the fittings were all nickel plated and the rod cost about 8 pounds ($16). My wage was 2 pounds, 9 shillings & sixpence a week but I saved enough to buy the rod. I lived at Gordonvale and I couldn’t wait to use the rod, so I hopped on my bike and rode to the Mulgrave River, baited the line, cast the line into the water, stuck the rod in the sand, turned around to do something, looked back and there was my brand-new rod being pulled out of the sand and disappearing in the murky water. The river was wide and deep, so that was the end of my rod. However, 6 months later I was fishing downstream from where I lost the rod, and I pulled my line in to check the bait and I pulled another line in with it. I pulled that line in and there was something on the end of the line that I thought was perhaps a small tree branch or something. But it was my rod and reel that I’d lost 6 months earlier. Most of the varnish had come off the rod, but the Alvey Reel was in very good condition despite being in the water for 6 months. No corrosion at all. I just cleaned it up and still used it for years.

I'm from the US and have had an Alvey reel for nearly 20 years. I joked with my buddies about it being able to winch me out if I got stuck in the sand. I only wish I had bought the corresponding rod with it. Subscribing to keep up with Aussie surf fishing.

A friend had given me an Alvey years ago and for the life if me I can't seem to find it… saw quite a few of them on the “Bay of Evil” … They’re not getting cheaper.. 🤣.. Anyway, ... I would pick an Alvey over a spinning reel any day of the week… although, ... I’m an old-school conventional/ multiplier kind of guy here in the western United States… have always liked the way it works… unlike the spinner... Got my eye on a few of them... 👍😎👌

My Dad taught me to fish on a small Alvey reel when I was a kid. Such a bullet proof bit of equipment for a kid to learn on. I used to get heaps of birds nests on the spool till I got good enough to lay the line down properly with my finger. Great memories. Good to see they have a kayak model available now. I've often thought they'd be great on a yak since the reels get dunked in the water so often. Your comments re small swivels are bang on too. My old man always used small swivels on his Alvey's.

Have 4 of them. Everything up to Kingi's is no problem. All 6500 series spooled with IGFA 6kg Mono . Distance is superb using 4 oz and 1/2 a pilly here in NZ. Line twist is minimal if you strip off 20 odd meter's every now and then and let it unwind in waters edge. Works for me. I also end for end it every 6 months!! No bust offs!!

I love my Alvey reel collection too… don’t forget they may be a slow one to one retreive but the diameter of the spool is large compared to a tiny eggbeater spool so the length retreived in one revolution is probably not much different than an eggbeater spinning on 4:1. I also love how smooth and sensatative Alveys feel.

Please do Mate 😊😊 strong, simple, reliable,and durable reels. Alvey have closed down a few times but reopened again. The trouble seems to be that they are made so well they never need replacing. Im 50 and the one my dad has when i was little is still going. They are bomb proof. I know a lot of American fishermen would love them and it would really help keep an amazing Aussie company going. They are a little more expensive than a basic spin reel but certainly no more expensive than a high end reel. Best wishes from Queensland Australia Mate

There is no bail to cross hatch the line as it is being retrieved so it must be manually done with your finger so you better have tough fingers to prevent burns. Now try trick that while tackling a fish in.

I’ve been using Alvey reels , and spinner/overhead , reels for 45 years. Laying the line is down by one’s index finger, and is a simple non painful non cutting activity. Even while fishing maximum drag landing a fish the line lay is done with index finger and is of no issue. The line gets laid as one drops the rod to recover line, when very little pressure is on the line. Alveys are not the do all to end all, they have their place in mainstream fishing. The improvement of spinner/overhead reel materials has increased the life use of such reels and reduced the relevance of Alveys.

Hey great video But I don’t think your being fair or accurate about the retrieving speed of the alvey, well the big ones at least. They have a huge circumference so while itsa 1:1 ratio each turn is like 300mm of line approximately returned. They’re a great reel for lures and metal spinner etc & I’ve never had an issue with the return speed. I’d back my 650 to retrieve faster or as fast as any big egg beater I own. An egg beater needs to spin so fast cause of its small spool circumference. My only issue with alvey is the need for swivels & the two extra knots to tie them on. Plus they have plenty of places that will smash a pippi shell over & over.
@lauchlanguddy1004

I have become a convert to Alveys for surf bait fishing in recent years. I have found that swivels do not take a great deal of the line twist out when using a Paternoster rig which is the normal surf rig in southern states. To combat line twist I have made my own "spin doctor" that rotates in the opposite direction to the commercially made one so as it unwinds the Alvey line twist. At the end of the day unclip your rig clip in the "spin doctor" a few casts and retrieves and the twist is removed. Once the Spin doctor can be held at the end of about 3 metres of line from the rod tip and it no longer rotates from the line twist you know the job is done. Here is a video of how the commercial "spin doctor" works on a spin reel so you can see how it works. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roG2i4CpdtKXqq8

Hey - so why did you cut the bomb sinker (presumably) in the opposite direction for use with the alvey reel ? I'm about to build a homemade copy of the spindoctor and now wonder which way i should angle the cut .... I've also read on the alvey site that line twist occurs when too large a swivel is used for the rig - or when a heavy running ball/bean style sinker sits hard up against the swivel, hence blocking/locking the swivel up whilst retrieving. Clipping a star sinker onto the end of the lines on a paternoster rig is recommended. or you can use another swivel & short dropper attached to your sinker, and thread the swivel's loop onto the mainline above your inline swivel - hence creating a running sinker that won't press up against the inline swivel.
@no_triggerwarning9953
@no_triggerwarning9953 3 жыл бұрын
@@snappermuppet Yes a 3 ounce bomb sinker was the starting point, I use it with 8KG+ lines. I cut the sinker in the opposite direction to the commercial spindoctor because when casting with an Alvey the line comes off the spool in the opposite direction to a spin reel hence puts the twist in the line in the opposite direction. Once you have made the spindoctor I suggest you paint it a bright colour as it makes it much easier to see when casting against a cloudy sky and grey ocean. The paternoster rig has two dropper loops and usually has a 4-6oz Star or 3-5oz grapnel sinker at the bottom attached with a snap swivel. I have tried various combinations of swivels to attach the rig to the mainline and it hasn't made much difference to the line twist.
