How to Clean an Alvey 650 a Side Casting Fishing Reel. Complete disassemble, clean, and reassemble.

Here is how to clean an Alvey 650 a fishing reel. There are many models of Alvey that are very similar so there are more applications for this video than just a 650a.
Most of the Alvey reels are very simple. They withstand the salt and sand very well. However, you still have to clean and maintain them periodically for the best service.
In this video, I show you every step of how to take apart and service your Alvey side cast real. The only thing I don't show is how the clicker was taken apart but it is very simple itself.
I only use dish soap and CLR to clean my reels. After I clean everything it gets rinsed and I oil or grease it and put it back together.
When properly maintained I don't see why there's any reason it will ever wear out.

I like using an Alvey Rockhopper off the stones with cut bait. Catch something new and big occasionally.

Great Reel, we use them in Australia, pretty much bullet proof. I've had mine for years, I've dunked it Saltwater for years. I just lube it once a year. Works every time. I do wash it dishwasher liquid with freshwater to remove the excess salt. Good job

I'm 40 in August I got my real for my 17th birthday. It is basically the same, but the graphite back version... ... works like the day I got it actually it's a bit better because it's not as stiff now 😂

I use mine quite a bit in the Northern Beaches just north of Sydney and they haven't failed me yet. I've lost quite a few egg beaters to sand but so far the Alveys are still going. They might have built them a little too well.

A series reels don’t have a drag. It is a spool tensioner. Palming the reel is the drag system on A series. C series have very good drags.

I think I have a 1970 model market A1/ 7 bakelite it also has the line ring up front. 🐊

I have since gathered a bundle of Alvey reels but I don't have any with the ring up front. How do they cast compared to the later ones without the ring?

Help land fish and stop line slipping of the side, on a surf rod cast is fine no drama.@@landcastertackle

Line loops slipping off the spool while at an angle is the biggest problem I have with Alvey reels.

Oh and that looks more like it's from the 90s not the 70s. They didn't come out until I was older, probably 6-8 and they had the stainless steel back then they went to the graphite back. I think my brother got his in 1997, and it's the steel back and I have the graphite back i got mine in 2000.

Even if its 20 years newer it's still stood up to the abuse we give it. Im always surprised at how much sand can come out of one when a few grains will kill my eggbeaters.

My dad has the yellow older Bakelite one which is the 70s

I have a couple of the Bakelite reels. Surprisingly they are still working as well as they were when they were new.
