I appreciate you stating that this is easier said than done. Most people who post videos like this and go through the motions really fast tend to leave out steps and so forth which is understandable however it gives the illusion that these types of repairs are much simpler than they actually are.

Protip for using jackstands under the stock folding footpegs: remove the footpegs and flip them around so they fold down instead of up, that way they actually support the bike. Wrap them in a microfiber to prevent marring.

I done this recently and not easy or safest thing to do using a car jack to lift the bike on, use something else. My bike was to heavy to lean on one and lift to get on the other, it just pushes the axle stand that way.

You saved my motorcycle dude. was going sell it coz it was handling poorly after few years of riding even after changing the suspension. Then saw your video and replaced the swing arm bushings. Again my bike is back in form. Yeah swing arm busings are perhaps the most neglected items. But working on them really make the magic happens. Thanx a lot.

Hi Ari.. I am a regular viewer of MC Garage videos, they are really good.. and putting my life at ease as I like to work on my bike mostly myself.. like you do! Well, I reside in a locality where there is lot of dust and humidity and to add on to it, I live close to the sea. As a result, I can see my bike's rear suspension joints, swingarm and chassis to begin rusting, I wanted you to help me with some quick DIYs that I can do besides keeping my bike clean and polished for keeping rust at bay...Thank You!

I watch all of your videos to get ready for when i buy my own first motorcycle which will be a Honda cbr500r sometime in the next year that way i know what to maintain and how to fix anything if needed. I know you mainly focus on mechanical issues but I was wondering if you could do a video on how to wire up accessories to your bike such as an accessory socket, usb plug, more lights, under and blow glow lights, or even an extra fuse box for people who need to power a phone, lights, gps, 360 cameras, communication devices for longer drives where recharging isn't viable. Another good idea would be everything that needs to be done on a brand new bike before you first ride it or even a behind the scenes of what needs to be done to a bike that comes straight from the factory out of the box. You guys provide such great and thoughtful insight on how to do things in short format videos while not missing important details. Thank you I hope to see videos on the subjects I commented about in the near future!

Drill and tap holes for grease fittings and shoot some grease into the bearings at oil change time. The old bikes came with grease fittings so you could keep the bearings lubed. It's simple and effective. I also drill and tap my shift lever. It's amazing what a little grease will do. This is what happens when you were born in the 50s.

Love watching these videos, but I've gotta put it out there - it's NEVER this simple or strait forward in practice (at least not for me). I invariably come across stripped or seized bolts, failed seals after reassembly, extra nuts or washers after install. It's like we're all missing a bloopers reel somewhere in these videos. Still - love the videos and if for nothing else they remind me of things I should be doing that I'd otherwise never think to do (like this video).
@AriH2117 жыл бұрын
No outtakes, but it obviously takes longer than 3 or 4 minutes. If you've got seized fasteners, hit 'em with some penetrating lube and a torch. And if you end up with extra nuts and bolts, try bagging everything as you take it off, and write what it is/where it goes on the bag.
@carefulthoughts11566 жыл бұрын
Grab a piece of cardboard, poke some holes in it and stick the screws into it with the washers, seals and nuts in the order you disassembled it. when you have a lot of screws write above each of them where it belongs and what it is good for. I never have spare parts after reassembling. greets from germany

@JohnnyKillmore7 жыл бұрын
No mention of what happens when you find slop in the linkage and actually have to go to war on the bearings. Smart, because if you know that part of the job is coming up, you know why most people don't do this maintenance. A quick way to check for slop is to the bike on a centerstand and pick the rear wheel up/down. If you can feel even the slightest clunk, there is slop in the linkage. If the bike is old enough it might just be wear in the bolts/bushings, but it still adds up to a surprising amount of $.
@onemaninaboat7 жыл бұрын
One thing which you failed to mention is what happens when the bearings in the linkage/swingarm seize. On some bikes (rsv, tuono) this leads to catastrophic linkage failure and I know of ppl who got seriously injured because of that. No matter what it costs in terms of time, its always worthwhile to keep the linkage in good condition.
@AriH2117 жыл бұрын
Wow, I've never actually heard of a linkage-bearing seizing. The linkage on those Aprilia's must be pretty fragile.

Can this video be made with a single sided swing arm?
@sv650nyc76 жыл бұрын
Not as simple as it looks on my bike. On my 2006 SV650 the exhaust has to be removed to remove the swingarm. Also, after I re-installed the swingarm I noticed 1mm of lateral play in the swingarm. This is due to the center spacer being too long. There's also the same play on the rear shock linkage that bolts to the swingarm, also due to a long spacer. I did not have this play before, but it seems to be intentional from the factory. So I'm a bit confounded as to why I have play now but didn't before I cleaned and greased all parts.
