Hi, I live In a colder climate here In southern NH, and I love a correctly set electric choke. Gives me a little joy to start my 71 Chevy on the first pulse. Couple things on my car. It has a crate 350 that I believe is just stock but .030 over. The paper work claims 330 HP, but I think that's optimistic. I also have an AVS2 mine is a 650, as yours appear to be. On a cold start I pump the gas pedal twice and on the 2nd pump I make sure to go all the way to the floor, hesitate a beat, and then release the gas pedal. This assures the linkage has enough time to close the choke and simultaneously swing the fast idle cam in below the fast idle adjusting screw. Also, If the engine revs too high you can kick the idle down partway when the choke isn't all the way open, try it. I will usually give the throttle a blip after 15 or 30 seconds if I don't want to spin the heck out of my cold engine. At that point I can usually get an idle above normal ,but not frantic fast. I'm older and remember my parents cars doing that in-between idle when it was super cold.

So to clarify, just a light tap on the the accelerator should set the fast idle/choke? I have a 78 C10 350 with the Edlebrock 1406, the choke and fast idle works great and is set where I like it, but I can't get it to set from inside the cab. It seems like though whenever I take off the breather as soon as I touch it, it clicks right into place.

Mine was like that too. I think my drop base air cleaner touched too much of the linkage to allow things to move. so I checked and since there was a little room over head I put a half inch Edelbrock spacer on it. And as to the light tap, no. Before you crank do a full throttle-to-the-floor press. My car likes 2 of them. The pedal to the floor pumps a shot of fuel and also sets the choke to a closed position. Do you have a video on setting the electric choke? I keep having a problem where the fast idle linkage sticks and wont allow the cam to turn and drop to a normal idle.

Is one of your final steps after opening the choke to drop the idle, also to check the reverse/drive (if auto) idle?

@@danielbadger2641 separate adjustment but linked. Yes once the choke/fast idle is set, verify idle and you’re good to go. A little different with a manual choke carb.

On my Edelbrock 1407 with electric choke I can't adjust the fast idle with the engine running, I can't get to the screw. I have to open the throttle fully so the screw turns and faces a position where I can access it. I have seen manual conversion kits that have a ton of parts in them, is it not possible to remove the electric part and fit a cable to do the job of the bi-metal strip? The problem I have is when the car has been left for a while you have to pump the throttle to get it to start, but that knocks the choke off.

@@MuscleCarSolutions No, it will still need to be held open at full throttle to get to the screw. I've never been a fan of auto chokes, a manual one would be much better. I think I will have one last try at getting it setup properly first. The car hardly gets used so when you come to fire it up after a few weeks it's hard to get it going, it's as if it's not getting fuel but the accelerator pump works but then it ends up flooded, think it over chokes.. It's hard because it's not my car so only see it now and again. The choke is set so it's just on, I'll watch your other vide.

Assuming your electric choke is powered and adjusted for cold close... So with the engine off hold the throttle open and creep up on the fast idle you want. To do it you can momentarily swing the fast idle cam in there with a warm engine to test things. When you let it free the choke will reopen if it's warm, or work normally if it's engaged cold. If you go in to the Edelbrock book/website you are doing it the way they say to do it.

On MY AVS2, I pump 3 times to the floor, and car immediately starts fine, but doesn't stay running. I find my self feathering the throttle to keep it running. Should I add more fast idle?

Question about the AVS2 Thunder 1913 I have a 1980 firebird 301 and I found that they put 700-800 cfm carbs in these back in the day. I want to build a bigger engine but for now I need a new carburetor. Will this work? I have the rise plate that cuts the volume in half on the back ports.

Great video, i have one question about my 1976 european ford taunus with 1.6 pinto engine and autolite 1250 single barrel carb. It cold starts fine and accelerator pump also works it doesnt bog when i suddently tap the gas when its cold BUT on the return to idle after giving that gas it bogs down and feels like its about to stall but then recovers and goes back to idle speed again. This only happens when cold, its fine once it warms up. Do you know what could be causing this issue with the bog when returning back to idle?
