This is about the clearest explanation I have ever seen. Thank you very much. As the comments note, tempo is perfect, the directions match up with Word and I can replicate precisely what you did with no problem. Would that others follow a model like this--most have NO sense of pedagogy. Again, thank you.

Amazing video! When u change the Default one, all existing tabs in the document change also, which I don't want. What if for one section you want to use 0.25", but then revert back to the Default 0.5" somewhere else? e.g. I'd like this to happen: One line 1, whenever I press Tab, it moves 0.25". So if I press it twice, it moves 0.5". I might then a few lines lower want each tab press to be 0.5". Is that possible? This is really handy when you're mocking up a Table column (without actually using a table in the document), and sometimes you want to press Tab once because it's enough space between the words, but sometimes you want to press it twice... How can I do that?

Hello ItsLotus99, I'll try to answer your question as I understand it. Yes, you can set up Tabs in the way you are describing. But in order to do that you have to understand something about how Tabs works. First, as you discovered, don't use the Default setting of Tabs unless you do want to change ALL tabs to be exactly the same throughout the document. Also, keep in mind that whatever Tabs you set up for any given line of text, that setting will apply to the entire sentence, indeed, to the entire paragraph, however many lines it uses. A line is not the same as a sentence.... a long sentence can take up several lines on the page, but a single line is just a single line, no matter if it holds one short sentence, or part of a longer one. So, I think the way to do what you're referring to is to place the cursor into the line where you want the .25" Tabs to be, then insert the .25" Tabs manually along that line. Then when you press the Tab key, it will indent that whole sentence .25" each time you press Tab for however many times you inserted the .25" Tab, just for that sentence. Then click to place the cursor on the next paragraph and it should revert back automatically to the default .5" Tabs. Or, you can insert some other custom Tab for that paragraph/sentence. I hope this helps answer your question.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write out such a comprehensive reply. I believe I understand your solution. However, I had hoped the solution would not be as labour-intensive as it seems to be. Your standard 8.5" wide paper has ~7 inches of writing area in terms of width. I would have to manually click on the ruler 28 times to insert tabs every 0.25 inch? 4 times per inch, in other words?! It’s amazing that Microsoft hasn’t done something as simple as allowing for a “default” tab setting for each section. That would be exactly what I want. No different than how you can have one paragraph that is double spaced, and another paragraph that is singlespaced.

PS What is this “custom” method you have in mind? Is it any less labour-intensive than the first solution?

Hi ItsLotus99, I read your latest question about this. As far as I know, the only other way you might accomplish what you want is to use an invisible Table instead of Tabs. Inserting a table would be much faster than having to insert tabs manually. (I haven't been able to come up with a way to use tabs efficiently and quickly either). For example, if you go to the Insert menu and click Insert Table --> Insert Table, when the dialog box displays, you could create a table with, say, 24 columns and enough rows to handle how far down the page you want. Then you can set the column widths for .25" which they would be close to anyway. Then make the table have no borders anywhere at all, and maybe select to show the gridlines only. Then, when you press the Tab key, the cursor will move from column to column at precisely .25" each time. Once you have your table set up the way you want, you could copy and paste that table into other sections of the document, as desired. The default Tabs for the document would remain at .5" and you can use the tables to tab through the lines at .25". It isn't the best solution, but until Microsoft comes up with better Section Breaks that work with default Tabs differently in each section, this may be all you can do.

Good morning Debra, thanks. That's a pretty ingenious solution! That would be much easier for sure. Though it's still such a clunky way of having to do it... I was going to just set my Default Tab Stops to 0.25" going forward and press it twice to get 0.5" whenever I want that much space, but I just realized that Word doesn't save what you override from the 0.5"??? OMG!
