A channel strip processor by Behringer called the Ultravoice UV1 competes in the voice recording market. The processor is highly similar to the famous DBX 286s channel strip. However, the Behringer Ultravoice UV1 has added features like an on/off switch and an XLR/Line input jack on the front panel. It also offers a USB interface with a headphone amplifier for recording directly to your computer. In this video, Voice-Over audio engineer Lenny B walks you through the controls of the Behringer Ultravoice UV1 and explains how to adjust the settings for optimal sound. The UV1 may be a good choice for processing voice audio for live streaming, podcasting, ADR, voice acting, on-camera dialogue, animation, gamers, commercial voice-overs, radio broadcasting, and more. Finally, you'll hear a back-to-back comparison of the two units using an AKG C214 microphone.

About Lenny:
Audio engineer, producer, marketing specialist, and radio broadcast professional in Southern California.
A custom processing preset by Lenny B for voice-over is a series of plugins explicitly tuned for your voice, in your room, and on your microphone. To compete in today's voice-over world, you must ensure that your demos and auditions are extraordinary. Voice-over artists at every experience level from all over the world are fighting to win work. However, if you don't have a professional sound, you will lose out to someone who does. Custom voice-over processing can take your audio presentation quality to the level necessary to compete with the pros. Instead of taking it upon yourself to tweak the parameters like EQ compression, DeEssing, and saturation, you can hire a professional voice-over audio engineer to create it for you. Once you have the custom preset on your system, you have "The Sound" every time you press the record button.

Thanks so much for this. My DBX 286s died over the weekend. I saw this video and decided to go with a Beringer Ultravoice UV. I have no regrets about buying it. This fabulous unit is about $100 USD cheaper than the DBX. The biggest difference between this and the DBX is that this had things that DBX does not. Power On/Off, Level Monitor, the Mix knob, and of course the headphone jack. Being an independent audio interface is just icing on the cake. To my ears, the DBX and The UV sound about the same. So why not save some money! Thanks for making this video. Looking at how yours was set up (and the steps you went to get the results) up gave me better results than when I attempted it on my own, and probably more so better than when I had the DBX. Cheers!

Excellent review Sir. I am a DBX owner myself,. But one thing I note is that you have a more upbeat tone to your voice when you switch to the Behringer whereas you are slower and more precise in what you say on the DBX, it also sounds like you get a little closer to the mic with the DBX . Also, you have the enhancers on both units set the same ie 3 -4, no two EQ's from different manufacturers would ever be the same, so personally, I would have tried to match the frequencies as you did with the gain and output etc. Behringer done a good job and has addressed the issues that DBX should have sorted, like inputs on the front, on-off switch and USB.

Great video, thanks for making it! I had 2 DBX286s strips, and each failed within 6 months or less (ughh!!). For that reason alone, I've been happier with the Behringer UV1: Lower price, good sound, integrated USB interface, and On/Off switch. I agree with your comment that the De-esser is powerful, and the noise gate is smooth and effective. I especially appreciate your tip about setting the output to get similar levels with/without the Bypass. Well done!

well i have issues with my DBX286s, first it started to distort the sound when the compressor was used, when i turn on 48v, the light will stay on even if i turn it off and lastly a potentiometer is broken if i change gain it will make the sound crackle infinitely. Unplugging it from the wall made it work again for a while but now the soundlevel drops occasionally, so its broken/unusable.

Thank you very much for the video, Lenny. Highly informative as always! The DBX 286S sounds slightly more open to me? I'm not sure if I'm hearing it just because there's a visual change in the video. Is there any channel strip which has more specific controls for compression (attack/release/threshold, etc)? I find it a bit concerning if I move the "drive" up I don't totally understand what it's doing. Is it pushing the whole signal up to a pre-determined threshold, and if so wouldn't it also push the noise floor up?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Жыл бұрын
Hi Markux. There are other units that offer more controls for compression. However, they increase in price quickly. Take a look at the Drawmer MX60, and the ART Voice Channel. To answer your question about the drive. It's not unlike a guitar amplifier. You can drive the signal into the preamp tube which increases the distortion. It also increases the loudness.

With the DBX286 286 you have to go through an audio interface like the Scarlett or MOTU units which output to USB. The UV1 has its own built in USB interface. These two scenarios would be great to compare. I don't think you mention how or what you are going into for recording, nor what app you are recording with.

Im on the fence with these two units, which one to get. My use case is essentially making my live sound better in a work situation for zoom meetings, mainly and attenuate some background noise at the same time. Software would be more hassle for me bc On my wok computer there is no audio stuff. Im using a Rode VideoMic pro because I dont want gear to be visible on the camera. So, the dbx sounded more "broadcast"-y to my ears, more rounded low end, but the highs are not my cup of tea., but it cuts through. The behringer is pretty good as well, but feels flatter, although the features it offers might make up for that. In Europe these two units are the on the same price. about $180 retail. Leaning towards the dbx, bc I dont need the interface and the headphone amp section, so for the same price the rest of the feature should be better on the dbx...

Johnny, I've thought the very same thing. Here's what I've found. The compressor section on the DBX 286 is very similar to a DBX 160 VCA compressor. There are several plugin models of that out there. That's one of the reasons that I LOVE the Waves Scheps Omni Channel. It has the same vibe and more features. However, I agree. If someone were to make that, I think it would be popular. Unfortunately, I haven't seen one out there. Maybe DBX is holding on tightly to the licensing for that one. They should put one out themselves!!!! I'd buy it immediately @dbxprofessional

I will have multiple inputs into my x32 mixers and having one output to the uv1, then having the uv 1 to import singles to the live streaming platform (zoom, for example.) and i can also have the playback from zoom to my mixer through the output channels from the back of uv 1?

I don't see why not. You'll just need to send the playback from the zoom to a sub channel that doesn't feed back to the stream, or you'll get a feedback loop. Any interface should work. It all depends on if your streaming software can recognize the interface.

I tend to do the same and included with that solution; I plug my monitors in as well so they aren't always on. The switch on the strip takes care of all that. HOWEVER, the inclusion of the interface into one device...fantastic! And if it lives up to my UMC202HD, it would be rock solid.

Hi Jennifer, I know the struggle. The truth is that the DBX 286s units are cheap (respectively speaking) for what they do. I had several fail on me after about 1 year of use. However, I always replace them with another unit because they deliver the expected utility. I can't guarantee that the UV1 will last any longer. I do know that the DBX 286s units will last longer if you don't keep powered up 24/7 AND you make sure they have space above and below them (if on a desk or rack mounted) for cooler air to circulate. Heat seems to be the cause of an early demise for them. Good luck!

Thanks for posting the video. This got me thinking. Why would a VO need a pre-amp with a drive/de-esser/enhancer/expander when the client is asking for a clean file or a file you can process with your DAW? Or would you say you don't need the plugins on the DAW when the file has been recorded using a pre-amp like this model?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis, Great question. A unit like the UV1 or the DBX 286s is great for getting a processed sound in real-time (live) on a budget. These types of units assume that your room is professionally treated and offer the best sound if they are. In my opinion, the quality that can be achieved with post-processing plugins is much better. If a client has hired you and is asking for a clean file, I'd send them a clean file. I'd always give the client what they are asking for. However, your sound is then in the hands of their producer or engineer. I understand that a completely raw file may not "sound" great. In those cases, I use a parametric EQ to balance the frequencies to correct any issues resulting from room resonances. My custom processing package includes a "tone only" version for just that situation. It's common. I hope that answers your question.

This unit brings a lot of value, specially considering it is both a processor and an audio interface, matching its price to a Xbox 286s plus the audio interface makes quite a difference.. one question I have is: with a audio processor like the 286s or the art voice channel, does the audio interface preamp matter? Or the bit depth for the recording even?

@@HeyLennyB Hi Lenny, thank you for replying, I apologize for not formulating the question properly. What I mean is, when using a unit such as the DBX 286s as the microphone preamp, and then outputting that to an audio interface, does the preamp of the audio interface matter(my scarlett 2i2 gen3 is currently at zero and reaching the -20~ -12Db levels)? also, does the bit depth of the interface matters in this scenario? I'm currently set up to 24bit/48KHz. I have a Shure SM7b, Rode Procaster and one AT2020. Dynamic mics have use a fethead.

@guido oliveria To get the best quality, use the "Line In" input on your 2i2. When you the the XLR jack on the front of 2i2, a mic level preamplifier automatically engages. So you want to make sure you use a TRS cable from the "Line out" on the DBX to the 1/4 in input (not the XLR). Then make sure the "Line" button is engaged on your Focusrite. Then, I believe the gain level knob on the Focusrite is bypassed (turning it shouldn't do anything). However if it does work, keep it all the way down. Let me know how it goes.

The real test is using this processor with a Shure SM7B which needs a lot of gain. My DBX 286a won't really give it the oomph it needs, so I have to run the 286 through a Scarlett Solo which allows for more gain...but will the UV1 give it the needed gain seeing that it is outputting to USB. Of course you could run the line out to a Scarlett, but that sort of defeats the advantage of the UV1 over the DBX.

You may be experiencing noise and lower quality because you may not be using a mic booster (like a Cloudlifter or sE Electronic's Dynamite Active in-Line Preamp) on your Dynamic Microphone. Dynamic mics can work wonderfully for voice-over, but microphone activators are required for dynamic microphones. A good clue that this may be an issue for you is when you find it necessary to turn your interface gain all the way or nearly all the way to get a good recording level. The mic booster will resolve this problem.

I wish you could go more into hardware rack stuff for a studio seems like you got a bunch of gear.

Hey Magic Cyclops. I LOVE hardware. I will be doing more videos in the next few months and hardware will be in many of them. What hardware unit would you love to see? Are you thinking a VO walk through? Thanks for reaching out!

I don't like the DBX 286 S, because it doesn't have an on/off button

Behringer UV1 is a good solution, just a pity that the xlr microphone input is on the front. it would have been nicer if it was at the back, and the cables are better organized.

Can you run a mic to the input in the back? It might not be an XLR, but a xlr to qtr input, would that work? I have the same issue.

Unfortunately, no mic input on the back of the UV1

Not having a power button on my DBX 286's (and the DBX 1231's) is when I power on/off the rack everything in the rack goes on/off. I guess the ones that want the power switch is the home studio folks which is okay too. Good layout Sir. 👌🏽

I have gone through 3 DBX units. All develop noise over time, then sound awful unless I gently pound top of unit. I'm tired of it. Will this be more reliable do you think? Anyone else had reliability issues with their 286s? I'm tempted to get this UV 1...as long as it sounds comparable...as when the DBX works, it's amazing.

The DBX 286 units are great, but they only last a while. I have had the same experience as you describe: They last a year or two, then they die. I would expect the UV1 to be the same.

@HeyLennyB so to clarify, the UV1 to have same issues? What about a symetrix 528E if I find one? I may have a rare lead on a new unit. Will those last do you think?
@HeyLennyB

I can't say for sure, but I would expect the components in the UV1 to be similar to the DBX286s. I wouldn't bet on the Symetrix, either. If you find a (rare) unused unit, its components are still old because 528E has been discontinued for years. Heat is the enemy of units like the DBX 286s. The more you can keep it cool during use, the longer it may last. Also, (software) will likely last longer than these hardware units. You may consider processing inside the computer instead.

Hi Nightmaaron. I think I'm going to offer that type of set up as a service. I'm getting tons of requests for this. BTW, I got sucked in and watched almost all of your Charles The Spider Train video. 🤦‍♂️

@@HeyLennyB you totally should! I was mostly used to recording in studio. Now I am doing most of it at home and I’m trying to learn how to use some of this equipment I’m not accustomed to using lol! Hahaha I am glad you enjoyed it then! Lol. Was really a fun game!

I am 10 seconds from selling my dbx286s and Behringer UMC202HD and getting this model. The ONLY thing I would say that is a detractor is the support/service for Behringer. They have somehow decided to outsource support for this to MUSICTribe and they produce a great vacuum (to put it lightly.) Sent in a unit to them back in November and never showed back up here. FF to February - I asked for a refund and they wanted my bank account info? He'll no. Send me a check or venmo or PayPal me. I AM NOT going to send you my bank account info. No Way. Bear in mind for all who reads: This comment is solely against MUSICTribe and not Behringer. Behringer products are great.

Music Tribe has HORRIBLE customer service. Horrendous. They support Klark Teknik gear and they're so bad I sold off my Klark Teknik gear and paid extra for Warm Audio which is here in US and excellent gear and customer service.
