Straight to the point. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Does compost have to be in a sunny area? Can it be in shade? I drilled holes in a rolling garbage pail but previously did not get proper compost. Trying again this year but not sure if needs more holes it seems airier the better? Someone said covering it helps to breakdown. Is it true? Should i get a lid for the bin? Is it ok if that lid isnt drilled. Ty!

Garbage pail is too small to achieve hot composting, but it will eventually provide you with compost if you let it sit long enough. You want the material inside to be a good mix of carbon rich material (paper, wood chips, cardboard, dry leaves etc) and nitrogen rich material (food scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds etc). Doesn't have to be covered, but a cover might help it stay moist, which is necessary for composting to occur. Doesn't have to be in the sun, but warmer temperatures should speed the process up. If it's a black trash can might not want it in the sun over the summer as that might get a bit too hot and kill some of the micro organisms in there. Thanks for watching!

The compost doesn't have to be under the sun. Placed in a shady area is fine. External heat is not the key for composting, internal heat created from the breakdown of the contents is. that is why the bigger the size of the compost pile the better. Get yourself a compost thermometer to confirm that the centre is reaching 60C. A covering for the compost pile helps by reducing the excess water from rain - covering in thick cardboard is good enough.

Do I need something on the bottom? Can it be put on ground itself? Or better on plastic bag??

I would put on the ground so worms can access and help.

@Go Green Compost Can you get extra keys when you order? No bottom? Getting ready to order one... The neighbor's cat has been jumping off my pallet compost bin to escape after bird killing sprees, so I need something like this.
