I did the same thing a couple years ago. What a workout! Keeping the sides up while filling up the first couple cubic cards was so frustrating. I called it my mega-pile. I noticed recently that SIMPO has a 500 gallon size unit that just looks like the Geobin - but a longer roll - same fasteners and everything - but it has rods to hold up the sides. You can find it on Amazon. Your combined bin was no where close to being full, - how many of the regular geobins do you think you could fit in your combined bin? I've been thinking about doing this again soon.

Suggestion, pick up some rebar pieces to stake the sides up. Once you're done turning the compost, pull the rebar stakes and save for next time. Alternately, a fencing company may be happy to give away pulled chain link fence top rails. They often pull and dispose of old chain link for customers.

You needed to add water as you went. That is a great idea to put two together. The pile will heat better.

hi there...i have the same compost bins. my question is why do you have a tarp underneath all of your bins? secondarily, what is your primary components that go into your bins? i see you have 5 of them and while we have 2/3 acre and can keep 2 full, i wonder how you keep 5 of them going. curious

those are pallets under the bins, to provide aeration and to keep things orderly. I collect food scraps and coffee grounds from local restaurants, get wood chips from arborists, and scoop up my neighbors leaf waste on trash day lol

I have to use a tarp/plastic under mine because I have tree roots that will eat all my compost. I have access to wooden pallets, would that work just like the plastic pallets?

@randyman8984 he is using plastic pallet skids. I think upcycling plastic bread racks would also work. A lot of businesses throw those away because once broken or warped, they aren't worth the hassle. I worked next to a shipping company that curbsided wooden pallet bins. Upcycled many for goat shelters/mountains. Wood pallets would probably work. If you face them the right way, you could rake out escaping material.

@@velboyd5483 yeah I'm learning with these GEO bins I think all the heavy weight on the bottom causes it not to break down properly.. so I believe his idea with pallets on the bottom to allow more air circulation should work really good, fingers crossed .

@randyman8984 he's adding an incredible wealth of materials. I wish I'd thought of this back on the farm. We had connections with an arborist for wood chips. We had horses too. Which I made great compost with. But it never dawned on me that all the local connections to restaurants and businesses he uses would be possible. I've been trying to rack my brain on who uses plastic skids as a source and the only thing I can remember were the 5 gal paint buckets at Home Depot. But there are probably lots of places. In Ocala, FL I would try Cheney Bros. Because they are a huge distributor and I bet they kill pallets and skids all the time with the lifts. I had no idea compost rolls like this were a thing however. I wish I had known. That said, I've got enough room for worm buckets and container gardens in kiddie pools so that's what I'm going to do. And I have a carport that I can totally use for 2 litter bottle cascading planters.
