Great video, I'm considering getting one. So the way you had it hooked up like that...if you were running that into your DAW and recording it would record it as four seperate tracks? Would your EQ settings on the mixer translate into your DAW? Thank you!
@michaelcasey2194 Жыл бұрын
Great question. The ZEDi10FX sends four channels over USB, and there are a few options of which sources to send. One option is to send each of the first four mixer channels individually on four separate tracks as you mentioned. In this case they would all be pre-EQ which means the record feed would not be affected by the EQ on the mixer, however the lo-cut switch WILL have an effect on your recording if it is engaged. If you'd like, you can reconfigure the USB channels to send M1 and M2 individually on USB tracks 1 and 2 while sending your Main LR mix to USB tracks 3 and 4. With this option channels 1 and 2 are sent pre-EQ again, but the Main Mix on tracks 3 and 4 will be affected by your EQ and mix levels on the mixer. The third option would be to send channels 1 and 2 individually, and send the Aux and FX outputs on USB 3 and 4 respectively. These options are selected using a couple small buttons in the center of the mixer. In any case it will always be sending four individual tracks to USB, you just have some choices as to what those four sources are.

On your mixer, check that the M1-M2-L-R button is pressed under USB out source select. Then be sure to choose ZED channels 3 and 4 in your software. That is where the stereo mix will show up.

This was very helpful when setting up my ZEDi-8 since it was my first mixer. Thanks! But I wanted to ask about some issues I've been facing with it as a USB interface. When used as a playback or recording device through OBS, my recordings always have these random audio dropouts. On average, it will happen around 15 times in a 30 minute long recording. I've also done shorter tests where it happens as much as 5-7 times. It will literally stop recording sound for a microsecond which gives the impression of popping. This issue does not happen anywhere else but in OBS. Through Adobe Audition, whether set to ASIO or WASAPI, the recording is flawless. I've tried isolating the issue to see if OBS was just acting up, but my PC's built-in motherboard, and my previous USB interface don't present this issue with OBS. So I've come to the conclusion that the ZEDi-8 does not get along with OBS for some reason. In the OBS forum, one other person from a year ago posted about the exact same problem I'm having with his ZEDi-8 and OBS. If anyone else in the comments can provide some advice, I'd be very grateful.

Great video, and perfectly timed! One challenge I have is hooking up a Blue Yeti USB mic to the board. I'm going to try using a Onvian 3.5mm Female to 5 Pin Mini USB Male Microphone Adapter Cable connected a second 3.5mm to 1/4 cable. If that doesn't work I thought I'd try the headphone monitor of the mic directly to the 1/4 input via the second cable directly. Trying to avoid having to buy a new condenser/dynamic mic.
@michaelcasey21944 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, Chris! USB devices need to be connected to a USB host such as a computer or tablet. The ZEDi mixer and the Yeti microphone are both USB devices, so they cannot be connected directly to one another via USB without a host. The ZEDi mixers are built for XLR wired microphones and line level inputs, so the best option is to use an XLR microphone. While not really the correct or intended method way to interface two devices, plugging the headphone out of your microphone into a stereo line input on the ZED via 1/8" to dual 1/4" adapter may work.

I have a Shure SM7B and wonder if this mixer can power up this type of microphone or do I need another piece of hardware to boost the power before putting it to this mixer? Thanks!
@michaelcasey21943 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question and great microphone choice! The ZEDi series has better and cleaner preamps that other interfaces in its class, and I have personally used the SM7B with a ZEDi10FX without the need for additional hardware. That said, the SM7B does require ample gain and depending on your application results could be different. For instance, if you have a quiet talker or sit farther from the microphone then you may benefit from the added gain of an inline device such as a Cloudlifter or FetHead. If you have the time to experiment first, I'd suggest trying the SM7B and ZED mixer without any extra hardware first to see if you even need the additional gain.

Hello, and thanks for your question! In a typical scenario of using the EQ processor to tune a PA system, it would go between the ZEDi mixer and your amplifiers or speakers. In that case, connect the Main Left and Right XLR outputs of the ZEDi mixer to the inputs of your EQ, then connect the outputs of your EQ to an amplifier or powered speakers.

Michael, thanks for your video! I just bought this mixer for doing live Zoom dance classes and have been watching lots of videos as to settings and such in Zoom but I have a couple questions on where to best plug in my music into the console. I will be either using a second computer or my phone for my music source which are both a 1/8 in connector. Do I use M3 and M4 with a 1/4 splitter? Or do I use ST1 with a splitter or do I need a splitter at all? Also, which is the best connection to use for my studio monitors. I have some Audix self-powered monitors that can input with a RCA or should I use the main XLR inputs? I was a little confused reading the manual if I could use the 1/4 jacks option because of the FXout/footswitch as being one of the connections. So sorry for so many questions but your video was one of the few available for this model of mixer and I am new to using a mixer usb interface. I am also having trouble hearing my mix even through the headphones. Would you mind giving a brief explanation on how to setup your mix for headphones and then to hear through monitors? Thanks so very much!
@michaelcasey21943 жыл бұрын
Hi Wendy, and thanks for your question! Since your music will be a stereo source, the best place to connect it is ST1. You can do this with a 3.5mm to dual 1/4-inch cable such as the Hosa CMP-153 Stereo Breakout cable. If your monitors have RCA inputs, the best place to connect those is the dual RCA monitor output on the ZED. What you hear will be determined by the button under the monitor level knob. If the button is depressed, then you will tear the Main Mix that is creating using the red MIX knobs. If not, then the monitors will be interrupted with any PFL buttons that are pressed (the headphone icon next to each channel.) Setting up your mix for headphones or for monitors would be the mostly the same. They both are affected by the red MIX knobs for each channel as well as the MAIN MIX fader which will control overall level. The headphone mix has a few more potential sources which are controlled by the FX SEND, AUX SEND, and ST3 IN buttons under the Phones knob. Be sure that none of this buttons are pressed if you want to listen to the Main Mix. Keep an eye out for any PFL buttons that might be depressed which would interrupt the monitors or the headphones with an isolated feed of that channel, and be sure to set the desired listening level using the MONITORS knob or the PHONES knob. Hope this helps!

@michaelcasey21944 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matthew! While you can plug a mono source into a stereo channel, it would only be routed to one side of the Main Output depending upon which input jack you plug it into, left or right. If your output destination is also mono such as a mono PA system, then this may work just fine. However if you need true stereo output from the mixer it might be best to go with the ZEDi10FX so that each input will be routable to both the left and right side of your Main Out.

Thanks for your question! Yes, computer playback channels can be routed back to the Main L-R mix outputs. USB playback channels 1-2 from your computer will show up on "FX to Mix" so long as there is nothing plugged into the ST2 jacks, and USB channels 3-4 will show up on "ST3 to Mix." So I do some further investigation and see that the only way to get your main outputs into your phone is through channels 3&4....but of course there is no way to select 3&4 through the Iphone or the twitch app. This is a real missed opportunity here. This would be an easy solution for live streamers if only the main outputs were on 1&2. It would be a one stop shop and you would sell tons of these for this specific reason alone.

Great question. Yes, the USB connection on ZEDi series mixers is Class Compliant and can be interfaced with an iOS device using the camera connection kit. Please note however that the ZEDi8 in particular has a 2x2 USB interface. Moving up to the ZEDi-10 or ZEDi-10FX will give you a 4x4 USB interface. On those models, the options for USB output are M1/M2/L/R, M1/M2/Aux/FX, or M1/M2/M3/M4. Also note that the app you use will need to be multitrack capable in order to to access all for channels. Thanks for your question! The ZEDi10FX sends four channels over USB which are determined by the two small buttons in the center of the mixer. One routing option is M1-M2-L-R, which will send a dry feed of M1 and M2 to USB 1&2, and the stereo mix to USB 3&4. The app that you use will need to be able to access USB channels 3&4 to record the stereo mix which will include FX returns. Currently the only iOS app that I'm aware of that can access channels 3&4 is GarageBand.

Hi, Can you explain why the Fx to Mix control under ST2 appears differently labelled in the manual (p3) ?
@michaelcasey2194 Жыл бұрын
Great question, you are very observant! The user guide is for both the ZEDi-10 as well as the ZEDi-10FX. The drawing on page 3 reflects the ZEDi10 in which case ST2 is simply a stereo input channel. On the "FX" model, the FX to Mix serves a dual purpose - it can send the effects return to the main mix, or if the onboard effects are not in use it can send the ST2 inputs to the main mix.
@jonathan_bass Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I have the ZEDi-10FX model. Given the USB interface shares ST2 (and is the source when no 1/4" inputs are present in ST2), and that in that situation (which I feel is the norm), the FX don't apply, do you agree the label for that channel level to mix not be more clear if it said "USB/ST2 to Mix" or "ST2/FX to Mix? @@michaelcasey2194
@michaelcasey2194 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathan_bass Sure, perhaps that would make more sense. Based on the verbiage in the manual it seems to me that an assumption was made that ST2 would normally be used as an FX return whether it be internal FX, software FX returned via USB, or an outboard processor connected to the 1/4" inputs. Of course, that's not always the case.

Hi Pete! The ZEDi Series mixers are class-compliant meaning they do not require need any additional drivers when connecting to Mac, so it should work just fine with any version of Mac OS including Monterey. Be sure not to confuse it with the older and now discontinued ZED-R16 which used firewire connections and did require proprietary drivers.

I saw you plugged in two TS quarter inch cables into the line inputs for your keyboard. It's my understanding that balanced cables (TRS) are better for signal, but clearly I don't understand this. Can you explain?
@michaelcasey21944 жыл бұрын
Great question, and good eye! The benefit of balanced connections is that they are able to cancel out any electromagnetic noise picked up along the length of the cable. Whether a signal is balanced is determined by the output of the instrument and the input of the mixer, not just the cable. TRS cables are used for balanced connections because they require three electrical connections (TS cables only have two). Most guitars and some keyboards have unbalanced connections, so TS cables are often used over short distances (25ft or less). Typically noise would only become an issue over greater distances in which case it is common practice to use a short TS cable plugged into a DI box which will convert the signal to a balanced mic-level signal with XLR output. My keyboard is quite old and has unbalanced outputs, so there would be no benefit to using TRS cables. If your keyboard has balanced outputs, you can use TRS cables over greater distances without the need of a DI box. The best way to find out is to consult the manufacturer's specification sheet for your particular keyboard. In any case there is no harm in using a TRS cable on an unbalanced connection, just know that the cable itself won't make it balanced.

Does the zed 6fx have the same effects as the 10fx n do the mixers without fx in them mean exactly what I think it means has no effects in them
@michaelcasey21943 жыл бұрын
Great question! The ZED6FX, and ZEDi10FX share the same effects engine with 94 Multi-Model presets. The ZED10FX (not the "i" series) has similar reverb, chorus, delay, and flanger effects, but a smaller selection of presets (16). And you are exactly right, the models without "FX" in the name lack the onboard effects processor. In those models, the FX mix is only routed to the 1/4" TRS "FX Out" for use with an external effects processor.

The little square buttons in the center of the mixer will determine the routing to USB outputs. If you're using the ZEDi8, select L-R as your output source. That will have all mixed channels including the dry mics and FX. If you're on a ZEDi10, the L-R mixed outputs can only be routed to USB outputs 3 & 4 so you'll need a multitrack capable app like GarageBand to access them. USB outputs 1 & 2 on the ZEDi10 will always be a direct dry output.

There are four playback channels that are returned over USB. Channels 1-2 show up on the "ST2" or "FX" knob on the ZED mixer, and channels 3-4 show up on the "ST3" knob. If you're listening to the main mix in your headphones, you can dial these knobs into that mix. Or if you only want to listen to playback and nothing else, you can push the button with the headphone icon next to the ST2/FX or ST3 knob. It also might be worth a look in the I/O setup of Pro Tools - check that the ZEDi10FX is patched on the output tab.

Hello I'm a guitar tutor who does lessons online, I am interested in getting this mixer but I've experience with USB ones (particularly the budget ones) do not allow 2 way monitoring - i.e what you send you cannot hear yourself, and if you configure the USB out switches you can only hear what you are mixing but the person on the other side of a live stream (e.g a Zoom call) can't. Can the ZEDi series do 2 way monitoring?
@michaelcasey21943 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel. Thanks for your question! Yes, the best way to accomplish this without creating a feedback loop would be to use the AUX for monitoring. You can send each channel you need to hear to the AUX and also send the return audio from your computer to the AUX. Choose USB 3-4 as your "microphone" so the person on the other end would hear your Main Mix (everything except themselves). And you can hear yourself as well as the caller via the AUX mix.

@@Danielchengguitar My previous comment is true for the ZEDi-10 and ZEDi-10FX. The AUX mix is only sent to the AUX out 1/4" TRS jack which can be connected to a monitor speaker. USB 3 & 4 is what you would select in your software which corresponds to the USB out configuration buttons on the mixer (M1-M2-L-R being what is sent to your computer via USB channels 1-4). The ZEDi-8 does not have an AUX mix. You can still route USB audio to your Main Mix using the red MIX knob under the USB controls but you run the risk of creating a feedback loop or echo on a live call.

Can i connect Allen & Heath’s ZED 6FX to Amplifier via XLR to RCA adapter cable? A this mixer doesn't have a USB(an audio interface). If i buy an audio interface, can i connect a this mixer and an audio interface via XLR to 6.35mm adapter cable? A this mixer doesn't have a AUX or RCA outputs, only XLR output. Any difference between them? Voltage, Amperes? Can i convert(physically), it's safe to convert a XLR main out of mixer to 3.5mm, 6.35mm or RCA inputs? Thank you.
@michaelcasey21944 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question! Typically the 3.5mm found on recent-model computers is either a mic level input or a TRRS connection which combines both mic input and headphone output for communication headsets. Connecting a pro line level audio source in this way would probably not yield the best results. While you are not likely to permanently damage the PC input, the sound may be distorted due to a large difference in voltage. Short of upgrading to a ZEDi mixer, an audio interface is the next best solution. Look for one with XLR or 1/4" TRS inputs that has a Max Input Level of +9Bu or greater. (You might need to download and read through the spec sheet to find this info). You can connect your ZED mixer using XLR-XLR or XLR-TRS cables depending on the interface. As for your last question, there are differences in voltage between consumer-level RCA connections and pro line-level outputs, but they are not as drastic and usually safe to interconnect directly such as using an XLRF-RCA adapter cable to connect the mixer output to an amplifier. Usually lowering the output level slightly on the pro device is enough to compensate for this difference.

Hi, and thank you for your question! Unfortunately, the ZED-6 does not have a USB connection that allows it to connect directly to a computer. The mixers shown in the video are part of the ZEDi series, where the "i" stands for interface. There are separate USB interfaces you could pick up that would ultimately allow you to get your ZED-6 connected to your computer. The Shure MVi is a relatively inexpensive interface. However, it is a mono input. To work it with your ZED-6, you would pan all of the channels on your ZED-6 to the left, then go from the Left XLR output to the XLR input on the MVi. The MVi would then plug into your computer (it works on both a Mac or a PC). There's also the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which is a USB interface like the MVi, but with a stereo input. You could go from the two XLR outputs on the ZED-6, right into the two XLR inputs on the Scarlett 2i2. Or, you would have to upgrade to the ZEDi-8, which is very similar to the ZED-6 just with the USB output to plug directly into your computer. I'm sure that's not the answer you were hoping for, but I hope that helps!"

Can you tell me why Ch 1 & 2 are noisy with line signals like synths?
@michaelcasey21948 ай бұрын
Try toggling the Line/Inst or PAD switch on the input. In most cases with a synth this will need to be engaged. It's also common for noise to be introduced due to cabling issues. Be sure to connect a mono line input with a shielded cable to each the 1/4 jacks on the ZED mixer. Balanced TRS or unbalanced TS cables should be fine. If you're getting noise on the USB interface, that can sometimes be attributed to a computer's power supply. If using a laptop, try disconnecting the charging cable and see if the noise goes away.
