Great step by step guide right here! I do have an issue perhaps you can guide me?. I have a ZED 22FX and I have it connected via USB. I am able to push sound out of the computer into the board where I have my left and right speakers but I cant seem to get sound from the board and send it to the computer for recording or streaming. Do I need to create an aggregate USB driver since I'm using it on my mac mini? I've noticed a lot of step by step video that really doesn't mention too much about this. Thank you!
@Johnbanthony2 жыл бұрын
It uses a general USB driver, so you should see it listed as long as your zed is connected and powered on. Since you can get audio into the board from your computer into the board, you shouldn’t have a driver issue. Under System Preferences > Sound > Input do you have the Zed selected? Sometimes a program can use different inputs/outputs than what’s set under this. In Logic or Garageband for example, you need to set up the inputs and outputs for those specific programs. You shouldn’t need to setup an aggregate device if you’re solely using the Zed for input and output.

@@wickypedia541 I hooked up my Zed10fx, and on a new Mac (M1on Monterey), I am seeing what you are, where the Input and Output are separate. In this case, yes, you’ll want to make an aggregate device, and click on drift correction for one of the two. I have an older Mac as well, still on Mojave, where they are both under one driver. This may be something Apple changed at some point. AirPods operate a similar way, the mic and speakers are separate drivers.

The only thing to watch out for is your volume level going into Facebook, or any other streaming platform. I would run OBS for your audio and video, and add a compressor or limiter on the audio to make sure it’s loud enough. In the audio mixer click the gear associated with the Zed, and then click filters. Here you can add a limiter and/or compressor if you need more volume. Generally, if you can average being in the yellow on the audio mixer, you should be good. You can also make the output -1 instead of 0 to help avoid clipping on the listener’s side.

I have another question, if you don't mind me asking. I've managed to get OBS running on my Mac, and up to now, its working fine, with little or no lagging. But my dilemma is this... I want to run backing tracks from my ipad through OBS, for singing live on FB, or maybe YT, which channel would you recommend that I connect my ipad to, and will it be on the same channel as my mic inside OBS ?. Or would I be better off playing the backing tracks from my macbook ?. Hopefully you'll understand what I'm asking. Thanks in advance.
@Johnbanthony2 жыл бұрын
I would run the backing tracks off your laptop if possible. I’ve found that to be the most reliable way to run playback tracks. If you’re just playing a single stereo file at a time, you shouldn’t have an issue doing it off an iPad though. From a connection standpoint, It’s honestly easier with the iPad since you can run that into the RCA inputs on the Stereo 1 channel. Laptop can do the same, or you can use the usb connection to send the tracks to Stereo 2 on the mixer. If you get into a more complex OBS setup, I’d say run off the laptop. You can use midi to do scene changes in OBS. This will let you sync the scene changes with the music. In that situation though, you’d have to be running OBS off your laptop and not your phone.

Hi, Is it possible to send a mono signal from a computer via the mixer? I would like to send a clock signal for my analog synth, to sync it with a DAW. Thanks 👍
@Johnbanthony3 жыл бұрын
The usb return on the Zed will always be stereo and come in on the stereo 2 channel of the zed10fx. If you send a mono signal to the stereo usb return, you could use just the left signal. You’d have to route this out the Aux output, which is a single trs output and going to be stereo technically. If the input to your synth is trs, this shouldn’t matter if it’s mono or stereo. If it’s an unbalanced input on the synth, set the balance of the stereo 2 channel to the left.

Hi there - do you know if there is a difference in usb connectors? I only get one mono signal out and should preferably have a stereo signal.
@Johnbanthony4 жыл бұрын
The ZED series is designed to send a summed stereo signal over usb. If your mic channel is center panned on the board it will sound mono when it’s transmitted over usb. The ZED has 2 settings for the USB source but both will send a left and right signal. If you’re on a ZEDi mixer, the usb connection works differently and will send specific channels over mono depending on which mixer you have. If you’re running a ZED mixer and getting a mono signal I would double check your settings in OBS. To check this, go to the audio mixer window, click the gear icon associated with your ZED, then click advanced audio properties. You’ll see a box to check to turn it in to mono and a pan slider. Make sure the mono box is unchecked and the pan slider is centered.

@Johnbanthony2 жыл бұрын
It’s possible to do it this way, but the mixer routing would need to change. The RCA out on the ZEDs is set to the monitor output. So your stream mix would be based on the monitor levels for each channel. The ZEDi mixers can interface over usb directly to an iOS device with an apple camera kit, so setup would be less complicated. so I have the ZEDi10fx Im not sure if this is the newer version of what you have but it looks slightly different. I dont have the record button.. how would I set this up with this mixer?
@Johnbanthony4 жыл бұрын
Hey Melinda, the Zedi10fx is designed with recording studios in mind so it has a slightly different workflow. You won’t need to press a record button. Instead you’ll use the USB Out section to configure the signal being sent to you computer. There’s 3 options and 2 buttons. If neither button is engaged, it’s the bottom option where each of the first 4 channels is being sent individually to your computer. If you’re recording, and not streaming this will work great for you. If you’re streaming and want to use OBS, there is a limitation that you’ll possibly run into. When OBS captures audio for an interface, it will takes the first two channels of audio. The 3 settings on the Zedi10fx all push out Mic channels 1 and 2 to the first two channels. While this is ideal for a recording, it will cause some limitations in OBS. All 3 output settings push Mic1and Mic2 to the first two channels. You’ll also notice unless you set the Zedi to mono in OBS, you’ll always hear Mic1 on the left and Mic2 on the right. To make this mono, click one of the gears in the audio mixer section, then click Advance Audio Properties. You’ll see a mono button for each audio source. Simply click the proper one for Zedi, and you’ll have both mic channels coming through both speakers. If you need to stream more than 2 channels from a mixer, the Zed10fx would be better suited for this. It sums all the mic channels to a stereo signal for you when it converts to usb.

1Q : what if you plug a device to stereo jack in ST2? the Usb function will stop? 2Q : if you using condenser mic is need for 48v power but your guitar is passive (dont need phantom power) so will the phantom power burn your guitar pickup?
@Johnbanthony3 жыл бұрын
The Stereo inputs will not disrupt the USB connection, for the input or output. You could actually run the Stereo TRS channels to the usb connection if you want. Phantom power will only pass over a mic jack, which a guitar can’t plug into. You’ll need a di box to hook up your guitar directly. Phantom power is selectable per channel, and generally you only need to worry about damaging a ribbon mic with phantom power. If you’re mixing with a condenser mic, to mic your guitar or guitar amps, you’ll likely need phantom, but if you’re using dynamic mic, like an sm57, you won’t damage the mic.

If its a Rode NT mic with a 3 pin xlr, you can plug it in to the mixer no problem with a mic cable. If it is a condenser microphone you'll need to turn on phantom power (+48V). Hi, can you send me a list of cables to use for live streaming using the same mixer? Thanks :)

It depends on what you’re connecting to the mixer. If you’re using a mic, you’ll need an xlr cable. The only cable you need between the mixer and your computer is a usb cable. If you’re plugging in a guitar, you can use a normal instrument cable in channel 3 or 4. A DJ mixer or controller would use an RCA cable into the stereo input. If you’re not monitoring off headphones and want to use speakers, you can use TRS or XLR cables depending on what your speakers use.

sucks no one has anything on how to hook this mixer up to an iPhone for taking live calls. everything is about recording to an iPad or phone but not taking audio from the phone the proper way. I found one video but it doesn't match up with this mixer. Would be a great video.

Great idea. We're strongly considering creating this video. Please subscribe if you'd like to know if/when we post it.

@@Johnbanthony you know anyone Incan call and get advice on this. My friend who sells equipment says you can’t do it with this mixer but I don’t believe it. I’ve seen it done but with a special cord and was a bit hard to figure out. I mean this things got everything gotta be a way. Needing help sooner than later so just trying to call someone maybe.

@@steves9173 I would reach out to their US tech support. Their Distributor, American Music and Sound has a few people dedicated to just Allen and Heath. The number is 800.431.2609. Follow the prompts and it will take you to support for A&H specifically. If you need to leave a voicemail, they’ll 100% get back to you, so you don’t need to keep trying to call.
