other mixers (allen & heath eg) often have plenty of headroom built in to avoid clipping. Pioneer is digital generally so clipping occurs sooner/ easier in my experience. Depends on your mixing style too. i generally gain my tracks before I begin playing them as I often have very old tracks that arent as loud as modern mixes.

There are a lot of settings and it's nice to have your preferred settings stored on a thumb drive then make sure you load them when you're playing on someone else's gear. They didn't mention quantize. He has the CDJ quantize off. If you have quantize on that can make hot cues really frustrating. Quantize on the mixer makes your FX line up to the grid, but quantize on the CDJ makes your hot cues not respond until the next full beat.
@digitaldjtips3 жыл бұрын
Yes very true :) We mention Quantize quite a bit during the course because it's not set and forget, James is constantly turning it on/off depending on the technique so he definitely doesn't just have it off

You can find the original songs and find the pitch that way but a lot of times you can mix by ear. Doesn't always have to match pitches. It can work with 5ths and other harmonics as well. But it's good practice to train your ears as well.

In dealing with the gain. What if the recording level is low on the next song you want to mix in? Cause i keep having to adjust the gain when it comes to tracks that have a low recording level?

@digitaldjtips3 жыл бұрын
James uses a CDJ setup rather than controllers but it's entirely possible to pull off his tricks with a wide range of gear including controllers, in the course we have him pull off a couple of his signature routines on the DDJ-1000 and 400 to show it's basically all the same :) The DDJ-1000 would be worth a look if it's within budget, 4 decks by itself or you can hook up a couple of CDJs or turntables to it
