Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! It's awesome to hear you are working on your own project! I actually have an entire video dedicated to panels on my channel! I hope that can help a bit! As for the character issue, I think you need to begin thinking like a filmmaker! Reference your favorite tv shows, cartoons, and movies and see how the camera shot is set up. That will allow you to start thinking like a director! Once you get the hang of envisioning where things should go, it'll be much easier to place characters into your scene! Hopefully, that helps! Best of luck!

Let’s go, new Monitor upload! Also I got a new video idea: Could you maybe make a video on how to do a manga format on WEBTOON? While I do want to post my story on WEBTOON, I don’t want to use the usual format (like the panels being zigzag and all of that). I’ve seen someone use a manga format style on WEBTOON before so I was curious on how to do it. Thanks!

How do you get your manga published and eventually get copies sold? What’s the process like and how long is it?
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Every publisher is a bit different with their own process so it's hard to give one direct answer. For example, I once had a single comic strip published in a magazine called SEARCH SPRING 2019 ISSUE and my comic strip was just on one page. The process for that was a bit weird because they reached out to me and asked to collaborate. For something like Saturday AM, they have regular submission periods where you can get your name out there. I was first noticed during one of their March Art Madness art competitions a few years back. I was then selected to participate in their Summer of Manga competition with a one-shot called Second Serving. From there, I was assigned my own editor (I've gone through two so far lol) and I began developing my series. Before this current series, I was actually developing something completely different which eventually got scrapped by my publisher. Overall, the process is very slow. Since being given an editor it's been about a year and I'm still waiting for my first installment to release sometime at the end of this month. For publishers like Marvel and DC comics, I'm pretty sure they have portfolio reviews where you can show samples of your work and if they like what they see they'll keep you in mind. I'm much more a fan of creator-owned content though so something like Saturday AM was something worth striving for in my opinion. Saturday AM has partnerships with a lot of reputable companies like Wacom, Spectrum Markers, XP-PEN, and Clip Studio Paint. They sell digital e-books every 3 chapters and produce physical books after like 200 pages are published in the magazine. Overall, I feel like they're a wave worth hopping on if you're able to. There's even some talk that animation studios are beginning to express interest in working with them. Hope that helps!

Do you have any videos for publishing a manga? Like the submission process for both traditional and self publishing, along with names of publishers that print manga showing their submission pages. The only ones I’ve seen that have a submission page that isn’t outdated and still accepting submissions is Dark Horse and Viz Originals. Even Saturday AM when I tried to find the submissions page there was only for what looked like a contest (wanting a one shot of a certain amount of pages similar to Clip Studio Manga contest) not a publishing submission (wanting a Logline, Synopsis, Outline, Character Designs, sample manga pages of about 5-6, etc). Most videos that go over this type of info is extremely outdated and most of the links to these publishers either don’t work, are outdated, or aren’t accepting submissions (for years).
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics Жыл бұрын
I do have a few videos related to the topic! Some publishers prefer to find new talent through contests rather then pitch sessions so they get a taste of what it is like to work with the person applying Saturday AM for example. their submission process IS their Summer of Manga competition. The people who are selected are hand picked by a panel of reviewers and interviewed. I was one of the judges one year, we got a few hundred applicants, but only about 8 are selected to participate in the event and develop one shots for a magazine issue. If it looks good, reads good, the audience enjoyed it, and they were easy to work with, then the CEO might offer you a spot in one of the magazines or anthology books. Silent Manga Audition is a similar setup where it is competition based. I don't have specific videos walking through the websites of companies like Viz, Yen Press, Kodansha, etc because each company is a bit different Most publishers have a similar process though, a portfolio review like you mentioned or a contest. If their website information is outdated my best advice is to just email the company, they have representatives who are paid to answer questions like that Hopefully that helps!

No! If you use a digital art software like Clip Studio Paint, it already has tons of different Print Guidelines preinstalled! @MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! I feel like you definitely could like I've seen some literal names for objects or concepts used as character names (I.e. Cloud, Trunks, Red, etc). If you are referring to just combining random letters together and forming names that are not real, then it's kind of hard to answer. I feel like more times than not the name might already exist somewhere so doing a quick google search might help. Overall though, I don't think there's a reason to or not to do it, it all comes down to your preference! Sorry I couldn't answer that better LOL.

What's up monitor, I'm working on a comic but idk whether to do it in color or not. I feel like black and white suits the story, but I also feel like a "90's anime" color style would be cool. Does it matter? Idk how good my coloring is I'm pretty sure it's fairy good (insta is @the_dapper_doodler if you want to see some older work). For background it's a one shot so I doubt it'll be more than a portfolio piece and if it does become more it'll be redone anyway so no really pressure for me to make massive changes. Oh and I want the story to have kinda a spawn feeling to it. Walking the streets, doing odd jobs/detective work, etc. Incase this influences the color style at all.
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to share Alex! Your story sounds super cool I'm excited for you to develop it! As far as color goes, I don't want anyone to think manga HAS to be in black and white. While Black and White are VERY COOL and aesthetic to look at, they can be limiting sometimes. For my current project (the one I am working on in this video), I struggled with this same question for A WHILE. I made a full black and white version, a greyscale version, and a color version just to SEE what would be easier for me and what I liked. Black and white have their pros like it's MUCH quicker to produce. However, black and white are also restrictive compared to color. Since my manga is about artists using the power of art to change the world, I ultimately decided drawing the entire thing in color would suit the story better. I think it all comes down to personal preference and whatever you feel most comfortable with! For a detective story, I could see black and white or even greyscale working really well to set the moody tone. 90s color could also be cool though, in my opinion, though it might take away from the atmosphere though. Maybe make a test page and try both methods and see which one you like more! At the end of the day, you know your series better than anyone else! Best of luck and trust your gut!

How does a person even join Saturday AM? I keep asking during the Saturday PUB talk but my question is never answered. I even looked all over the website and can't find information about joining (unless I'm not looking right?) Please anyone respond because I want to publish my manga soon.
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment Mojo! I'm sorry to hear that your comment hasn't been addressed in the Pub talks! Saturday AM likes to say that they "aren't a club," so their selection process is a bit more exclusive. You have to get your name out there and prove yourself to join. The one way that preexisting creators join (like Boys Land, Codename Villain, and Hammer) is to be approached by Saturday AM directly. If you're already making comics anyway and publishing them online for the world to see, Saturday AM might take notice if you're showing signs of success. There's also another similar process called Saturday Submit where you can pitch your series if you already have like 5 chapters completed and posted online. If they like the chapters they might just ask you to join the team. These are the harder approaches in my opinion and not the ones that worked out for me. The more realistic approach is to take advantage of the events Saturday AM hosts like March Art Madness and Summer of Manga. Keep an eye out for when those events open their applications and do your best in each competition. Fred, Whyt, Raymond, Jey, and Andrea first learned my name when I did well in the first few rounds of March Art Madness a few years back. This made it easier for me to be selected to participate in one of the Summer of Manga competitions with my one-shot Second Serving. They must have liked the one-shot I handed in because right after I was assigned an editor and asked to join the team officially. I think the big thing is to think strategically. Like I built this KZbin channel to get a bit of a leg up if that makes sense. Now I have something I can market myself with that will set me apart from all of the newcomers joining Saturday Afternoon with me. For the normal person who wants to be working with Saturday AM, I think you definitely need to be taking advantage of the events they host. It's a hard, but straightforward path. Hope that helps! Best of luck!

@@chaffylocket1174 Personally, I've always done everything fully digitally, so I might not have the best answer for your specific situation. I'm also not super familiar with how SMA handles their submissions What I am thinking is that you work with what you have. When you bring the scans into Clip Studio Paint you can set your file size to the requirements that you need for SMA. As long as your final manuscript, the digital file, fits the SMA paper size requirement you should be fine. So even if you're a bit off in the paper you are drawing on, you can always adjust it a bit when it's in Clip Studio Paint Best case scenario would be to buy the paper you know you need, but I think you should be fine doing it with what you have

@@MonitorComics would that be possible... drawing In a sheet and when scanning to clip studio to adjust dimensions. I've ended getting some a4 sheets which they gave dimensions for and was thinking to do the work on those papers and scan each one to CSP to add halftones. That should work right

@@chaffylocket1174 If you set your file size in Clip Studio Paint to something like 11 x 15 inches, then it shouldn't matter if you drew on 8 x 10 in paper because it will always be smaller. You could always increase the size and make edits if necessary The only thing that matters is the final dimensions match what the SMA guidelines is asking for

@@MonitorComics oh okay right I didn't know you could change the dimensions and stuff for a page scanned in. I tested it and seems to work without distorting anything. Thanks for the help. I should get used to digital at some point for some stuff just feels weird to draw in those small panels on a screen with a pad in front of you. Like I could do illustrations but doing it in the panels wad too jarring for me as I was zooming in n out. Skill issue

what if you wanna upload them online should I still need to worry about margins?
@MonitorComics
@MonitorComics 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! The short answer is no! Margins only matter if you have any intention to one day print the comic. Honestly though, different printers request different dimensions, so by setting up margins, you aren't GUARENTEED to have the right margins for that printer/publisher. So you could always worry about that stuff when the time comes. Hope that helps!

So when I submit to publisher I give a pdf file , for manga for example
@MonitorComics

It depends on the publisher. I've worked with some that wanted PNG files placed into a Google Drive folder and that shared with them. Each publisher works differently, but they should let you know their guidelines on their website or if you ask

Thx @@MonitorComics I got a few questions but right now I can think of in my 1 in my head how far so how big I'm supposed to draw on the manuscript to make sure that it would fit and if you don't mind can you make a video explaining to create your own art style or some of the basics from creating manga

@@darkskinnhamar6925 All good. Sorry for the late reply. Generally, if you aren't sending your work off to a publisher, working with an A4 Paper size should be fine. So something around the size of traditional copy paper, like 8.5 inches by 11 inches. I would call this your Cutoff Margin because it's literally impossible to draw off of the paper. Then, I would create a rectangle margin for yourself that is about a few inches smaller than your Cutoff Margin. So if you made something like a 6.5 inch by 9-inch margin, this would be your Safety Margin. All this means is that it is safe for you to draw characters or speech bubbles breaking out of your panels if you want them to. They will still be visible because they didn't go off of your sheet of paper. As long as you aren't working with a magazine or publisher with specific requirements, this should be sufficient. I hope that could help! Please let me know if I can help clarify anything else! Best of luck!
