I‘m 72 & started at age 68. A slight advantage, I worked with live music practically all my professional career. I love every minute of playing. Yes, learning the necessary skills is challenging, but that homes my concentration and ambition. So for all those teetering on the edge „Just do it“

My favorite piece of hardware I ever bought is a separate stand for my rack toms so I can position them independently from my kick drum. It allows me to have the rack toms form a triangle with the snare while still having the kick at a comfortable angle for my feet.

My friend had that very same wine red Pulse kit when we first started, I know the exact one! That's actually hilarious... appreciate your content bro!

Hell yes, I needed this! I haven’t thought about throne height, I’ve had a weird strain in my back after drumming so I might need to raise it
@ThatSwedishDrummer3 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to hear that you find it helpful! Throne height is easy to forget, and especially if we're talking about a young drummer who's body is still growing - they'll need to change their height now and then. Good luck with your questions and let me know if you have any further questions!🙏

You may want to add a back to the throne...I've found out that's what happened over a long period of time without one.

I started at 15, but I haven’t played in 12 years. Learned by listening to albums look forward to getting back into it. This was before all the KZbin videos so I picked up a lot of bad habits from not having a teacher
@ThatSwedishDrummer10 ай бұрын
You can get far with lessons on KZbin/Instagram, but I always recommend anyone that asks to at least get one session in with an actual teacher. That way you can get feedback in realtime and get help with posture and technique. :)

Wonderful and practical advice. I know when I started (way before KZbin...or the internet lol) I would buy Modern Drummer magazine and go to see bands play to see how other players were setting up their kits. Then I would try out different things until I found one that I liked and worked for me.

That's exactly how it should go, man! I used to subscribe to Modern Drummer too and try out different setups from the heroes in the magazine. Aah the good old days 💪

If I have to extend my arms a lot when hitting my cymbals, does that mean they're too far away from me? I'm not hurting, but do you think I should place them closer to me? I might have to experiment with this...
@ThatSwedishDrummer3 жыл бұрын
If you're not hurting, then I'd say it's no problem. My personal preference though is that you should place your cymbals close enough so your arms won't need to be fully extended. If I want to do fast cymbal+snare-rolls, I'd want my cymbals close enough to play them fast and even. At the same time, I don't want them in the way of hitting my toms... so it's definitely a "fine tuning" sort of thing to play around with on the drums!

Great video - to the point, no fluff, but also had some really thoughtful details and nuances I wouldn’t have thought of. I’ve just upgraded from a kit on a rack to a kit with individual stands so this is really helpful as I figure out how to position and adjust everything. Mine is an ekit but I think this video is still useful!

Hi. I am new to the drums and I find your videos to be really helpful. There is one thing I am having trouble with and that is how to easily transition from the floor tom back to the snare. I keep getting my own hands and sticks in the way back to the snare and wonder if I don't have my drums set up properly or if it just takes practice. This is true particularly if the last floor time beat is with my left hand and the first snare beat will be with my right hand with my right hand. I feel like I have to lift my right hand over my left hand in order to get to the snare. Is that right ? Any tips you can give me
@ThatSwedishDrummer Жыл бұрын
I’m not exactly sure what you mean (I’m just thinking that there are only a few times I would start a beat with the snare drum). But it’s all about practice, so practice slowly and gradually increase the tempo. If you’re struggling with getting back to the snare drum, then reverse the sticking pattern. For example if the sticking is RLRL RLRL RLRL RLRL ➡️ and then back to the snare with the right hand; instead start with your left hand (LRLR LRLR LRLR LRLR). That way you have your left hand free to hit the snare drum right away.

No. Your rack toms must be placed in from of the snare drum for ergonomic purposes, and your ride must be placed over the bass drum toward you.
@ThatSwedishDrummer Жыл бұрын
There’s no “must” when it comes to the placement of drums. As long as you’re comfortable and produce a good sound when drumming, it’s all good.
@davidmcaninch4714 Жыл бұрын
@@ThatSwedishDrummerwrong. “Comfortable” doesn’t mean “ergonomic.” If you want a smart, efficient setup, you must be able to reach everything quickly, easily, and effortlessly. This is the only correct way to set up a drum kit: toms in front of the snare, ride over the kick. That’s it.
