This is probably the best method that I've seen. I'm not a believer in wiping the interior of a new humidor. That can impart too much water too quickly and cause the wood seals to warp. I seasoned a humidor for my cousin with basically the same method in this video. I took a clean shot glass and filled it with distilled water and i let it sit for a little over two weeks. at that point, more than half the water evaporated/absorbed into the humidor. Then I placed a digital hygrometer inside with humidification beads and watched it for a couple of days. After that it leveled out and it's been holding pretty steady for the past 4 months. Slow and steady is the best way.

It's crazy how the cigar humidor process is very similar to the acoustic guitar humidity process. I can actually use my guitar sponge cases to season my humidor! Still, this has got to be one of the best videos that I have ever seen on cigar humidors. Such a very clear video and it just cuts right through all of the garbage and only gives you the information you need! I smoked cigars many years ago and I recently gotten back into them after I purchased a humidor. I recently purchased a very beautiful humidor, which was brand new, from a secondhand place for $15 bucks. It came with everything inside wrapped and unused; along with instructions. I wasn't planning on this purchase, but when I researched it, I found that it was valued at $1,200, so I had to buy it. Plus, buying this humidor was the perfect excuse for getting back into cigar smoking! Thanks for this amazing video!

Although she does not recommend rubbing down the humidor with distilled water, she makes her case for the reason not too. Her other videos on humidors / cigars are very good as well.

I added 3 sponges with distilled water, one on each rack, until it came up to 70%, which was about 24hrs, and removed 1 sponge at a time until it stablized at about 70%. Whole process took 48 hrs.

I I just bought a humidor. I wiped it down with distilled water and placed the sponge in a bowl of distilled water let it sit in the humidor. I reached about 80% humidity in a day or two. So I took it out and used the humidifier it came with and put in Xhikar 70% solution. After 12 hours it read 70% so I was good. But then I put in 69% boveda packs in and keep getting a humidity level of 63-66%. I have enough packs for the amount of cigars it holds.

@jpgiuliotti5 ай бұрын
Thanks for this good video. Question though. If the humidity sensors are on the circumference of the front mounted hydrometer (I assume that is why you removed the gromet for the salt test), how can it accurately report humidity once the gromet is put back on for the airtight seal when remounting it on the front of the humidor?
@Cigar653 жыл бұрын
That humidor on her right is big. This is one of the few videos that is correct. Notice she DID NOT take the sponge and wet it and wipe the humidor down inside. That is the wrong way to do it!!! I have wrecked 3 humidors by doing that. I just ordered another one tonight. When the humidor is new and bone dry if you take a wet sponge of distilled water and wet the entire inside down, your shocking the wood and making it too wet, too soon. This will in a few weeks cause the humidor to warp. When it does this, you will never get 70%.Humidity. You now have a leak and if you check your humidor carefully, I guarantee you'll see a warp on the bottom, at the front, or at the back. A bubble like image. Hold it up and look. Your hygrometer will not read 70%. Therefore to Get your cigars closer to 70% you have to make up for the leakage by putting more distilled water units inside. The warpage will get worse. In time your humidor will be only good for storing nails and screws in your workshop. Notice she shows us a piece of cedar that is warped. This is what will happen to the cedar inside the Humidor if you wipe it down with a wet sponge.This mistake has cost me over $900.00 for the loss of 3 humidors. Never, Never, Never take a wet sponge with distilled water and wipe the cedar down inside. It is a quick death to a beautifully crafted piece of wood.
@K03sport2 жыл бұрын
...so laying the wet sponge on a baggie or elevating it a the wood is the better method? What about the seasoning paks?
@Cigar652 жыл бұрын
@@K03sport The wet sponge is fine as long as you do not wet the wood. I watched a video once where these two guys actually took paint brushes and soaked them in distilled water and practically painted the inside of the humidor with water. I have learned many things in life the hard way and this is another one of them. I now have 3 humidors that I use for storing pills, etc. The more cigars you have in your humidor the harder it is for the humidity to get around 70% but it can be done. If it only goes to around 57% then you need to add another humidity pack. Hope this helps.

So I’m chucking a 72% boveda pack in a small 20 count humidor with out calibrating the hygrometer, so you say about 7-14 days or slightly less
@mechwar31 Жыл бұрын
Something that was not well explained in the video, but maybe I should have looked before I acted... On the humidor with the hygrometer set into the front, you will find five holes on the back side of the hygrometer. In order to get the hygrometer out for calibration, I naturally figured I would just need to push something through one of the holes to push the hygrometer out. Unfortunately, the center hole lines up perfectly with the open back of hygrometer and I pushed directly on the back side of the needle causing the needle to then push up against the glass and break said glass. The good news is the hygrometer is still kind of works, but the needle is bent so it doesn't move freely and it may not have a good seal anymore. So, yeah, probably look before you try and push the hygrometer out.

@CheaphumidorsDOTcom8 жыл бұрын
You can mount your hygrometer pretty much any place it fits, as long as it's not squishing your cigars. We recommend double-sided tape, but any non-toxic adhesive will do. If possible, empty out the humidor, mount your hygrometer and wait for the adhesive to dry before placing your cigars back in. It shouldn't affect cedar or the flavor of your cigars.

So once you have it seasoned it reads 80% RH then you put in the humidifier(s) and wait 24 hours and it is supposed to go down to 72%.. not sure how adding more humidity will make the RH go down lower.. Is this correct??
@CheaphumidorsDOTcom10 жыл бұрын
The seasoning process is humidifying the cedar. Once you open the humidor to remove the seasoning kit/distilled water, you will let out the humid air, so their will be a decrease in humidity. Then the humidifier just has to humidify the air over the next 24 hours or so, not the cedar.

I did the salt test with my hygrometer first and never did get 75%. It kept reading more like 80%. I did this test 3 times. I finally said screw it and adjusted it to 75% and then began the seasoning process. Now, I decided to start all over from the beginning. Once again I am getting the same results. To add to my comment.....you just want your humidor to be consistent.....you don't want it going up, then going down.....you just want it to sit at a consistent humidity. If it fluctuates you'll get those cigars that look like they're falling apart, and that is because they humidity has in a sense 'stretched' the tobacco and then when your humidor goes down in humidity, the tobacco then shrinks tearing the outer leaf apart and destroying the cigar. People get a little too orgasmic about the humidity. You just want it to be CONSISTENT! That is KEY! 68-74% but it HAS to stay at the same humidity.

If you have a front mounted hydrometer and you put the plastic ring back around it after calibration, how is it supposed to read the humidity levels if the sensors are blocked? Forgive me, I'm new to this.
@JonathanRogler7 жыл бұрын
I assume it's because if it's front mounted then the adjustment hole in the back of it is exposed on the inside of the humidor, thus allowing the humidity to get in that way so it can be read. Where as if it's top or side mounted to a magnet the back is blocked and therefor if the sides were blocked too there would be no other way for the humidity to get in. Had the same question until I realized that this is likely the reason
