Thanks very much. I have been searching for a clear tutorial on this. I don't have fibre, and I have the next generation Sky router, which only has TWO Ethernet ports at the back, so that might be a problem when leaving the Sky TV (via Powerline) connection in the Sky router, as you said, to avoid contravening the Sky contract. But I think I'll give this a try. Hopefully I won't need to reset the Sky Q TV box afterwards.

Can you set VPN on the Asus (third party) router? Does that make sense since the sky router is the one connected to the internet?
@k7y
@k7y 3 жыл бұрын
this is the stupidest advice, the reason you want to switch to you own router is to make sure your router can do the routing part better. meaning that it can forward packet faster and prioritise important packet and traffic type so your latency is lower and throughput is higher. Also, responses and transfer ramp up are instant. if you want better wifi coverage just get a few wireless access points.

Hey, thanks for this video. Does disabling the wireless on the sky hub 2 basically turn it into modem only? I'm looking to get Google WiFi to fix all our dead spots.
@TechStuffUK
@TechStuffUK 5 жыл бұрын
yes disabling wireless makes it modem only. although you can still use ethernet ports.
@UnluckyDomino
@UnluckyDomino 5 жыл бұрын
This is incorrect. Disabling the WiFi just stops broadcasting the ssid, it still does all the routing so that will still bottleneck the amount of devices and speed each device gets since the basic ISP modem routers do not have good or any QoS service. But using google Wi-fi will help Wi-fi coverage since it will take the Ethernet connection and turn it into Wi-fi.

Strange that the WiFi is not good. To check the ASUS GUI you will need to download an app called ASUS Device discovery on your PC/MAC or smartphone. This will then tell you the IP address of your router. You can then type that in to your browser to access the ASUS GUI.

Yeah you have to look at the T&Cs when signing up to other providers but most don't throttle anymore because they want to be seen as valid competition. I'm currently paying £20 a month for Fibre 38 and its just as good if not better then BT. So as you say, if you know what your looking for it can be beneficial shopping about.

I personally don't care about their T&C's and if we fall out and they disconnect me then good riddance.. It leaves me open to then switch to another provider. However now I cant access the router, even if I just have it connected to the laptop on it's own. I don't need to access it really as all the passwords etc have been saved, but why can't I access it now ? Any ideas ? Using Windows 10. Thanks

Yes its because the router will of changed locations on your network. The sky router will still be registered to 192.168.0.1 so the ASUS router has a different location. To find out what this is you need to download a piece of software called 'ASUS Device Discovery'. You can get it on android app store as an app or download for PC here: dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-AC3200/Discovery_1471.zip?_ga=1.15054774.1258980105.1493241957 Hope that helps.

@TechStuffUK

The Sky Hub does not have any gigabit ports so your best bet is to use a gigabit switch. Simply connect the switch into one of the ethernet ports on the back of a router and it should work straight away. Then connect your computer and NAS to the network via the switch. If you want your computer to connect to the network via wifi then follow this video but connect the ASUS router into the gigabit switch, not the sky router. Hope that helps.

The 17mbps speed down is the maximum you will get into your with any provider if thats what you getting with Sky Fibre (unless there is a fault, may be worth contacting Sky just to enquire). It all depends on how far away you are from the fibre cabinet, the quality of the cables going to and from your house and the age of your house. If your have Virgin Media available in your area they may be worth a look. They use a different fibre network to all other providers so it may be faster.

@@garrywaters7149 yes you can fella :) the open reach box is only a modem, sky routers have modems built into them the video while very clear and good quality should have mentioned what each component was. A modem only converts the dsl line or in most cases the adsl+/adsl2+ to usable signals for the routing of network packets :), in this video the OP has whats known as FTTC (Fiber to the cabinet) meaning fiber run from the exchange to a local green box and then the green box to the house is the old skool copper cable. true Fiber wich is FTTP (Fiber to the premises) is a full fiber run from the exchange to the green box then a further fiber run to the home requiring a optical converting modem :) TL:DR You can plug your asus router into the sky one just fine make sure you disable wifi on your sky one :)

thanks for quick answer,,,,i went and purchased an unlocked open reach box....is there any reason i would need it now for anything or shall i just sell it again....at moment i have the asus plugged into sky router and all is working,....my plan was to use use a vpn but seems cant do it with asus in ap mode ...thanks

yeah you can probably sell the open reach box, don't need it anymore. If you want to set up VPN, run the router in router mode. It should still work as it will set up a subnet. Thanks for comment.

Yes you don't actually need the OpenReach box anymore! Sky Router can just act as modem.

Be honest that's a useful video... Be honest simple POE WiFi Access point will do the same. There's a big no go for this... The ping response OMG! That's terrible!

Can be quite hard to get nowadays. Try Amazon or EBay?

If you have the black sky hub 2 shown, it has an inbuilt fibre modem. The old Openreach fibre modem is a little redundant in this setup

Why am I only getting 9 mb/s when I’m on fibre?!?!!

Hmm that is a bit odd. Is that running a Speedtest on the device or within the router? I recommend contacting your ISPs support, they should be able to run some tests to make sure everything is ok.
