GMBN Tech any chance you might do a video on getting shocks tuned, something I very much want to do to my Fox Float DPX2 and maybe my fork Fox Factory 36 (little bit on the heavier side as a rider).
@adanielweaver5 жыл бұрын
I set it up by feel after trying recommended settings. It needs to be harder if you ride hard. Also, the shock pump usually doesn't lose air when its disconnected, that is just what is coming out of the pump. When you attach the pump it loses pressure though because it has to fill up the pump.
@DethSpune5 жыл бұрын
I change it constantly, always forget what I set it to, stop paying attention to how different it feels from previous, and always have good intentions to pay attention and set it properly.
@kmcnelley19815 жыл бұрын
Recommended setting from Fox for my weight doesn’t leave many clicks to play with. Getting a custom shock tune to adjust the shim stack is where I’m heading. Hoping maybe GMBN Tech lads can shed some light on the possible benefits/cons. Don’t want to throw $$$ in unnecessarily. Upgrading to a Fox Float X2 probably won’t solve the problem either. #heavyriderproblems

@@polishguywithhardtospellna8227 budget at arround 550 pounds for a top end endurk fork compared to the trend of rs and fox pricing their top end forks at arround 1000. @polishguywithhardtospellna82275 жыл бұрын
@@magnusbushby7847 Compare features and stanchion diameter, and You'll get to the same conclusion as I do. Durolux has 36mm stanchions, hollow crown, starts with good damper (second from top) with only fully fledged one above(choice of 2), has lowers pressure release valves and has a titanium axle. Is that a Yari competitor? I don't know man, looks like a different league to me. And price difference? We're talking biggest fork manufacturer - SR Suntour vs much smaller fish like RS and Fox. Yes sales margins are against SR, but they are the biggest by A LOT, and they can manufacture cheaper. Also buying SR doesn't mean savings all the way. For them it's cheap to make sealed damper units, for us it's expensive once one fail. Not many ppl out there that can service them(yes they can be fixed in some cases, but most places will not touch them, as it's "supposed" to be a replaceable unit). And in US and many many other places, ppl don't even know that for model with negative coil spring, YOU can purchase 1of3 coil spring rates, that corresponds to Psi You're using with your setup. Not always that spring will be correct for pressures You're using, thus lowering overall press and private reviews scores. SR should make a lot more effort in spreading this info and parts availability. We have really good presence and service/importer in Poland and the guy shares knowlege on forums etc, but many other places know so little it's hard to read sometimes.
@magnusbushby78475 жыл бұрын
@@polishguywithhardtospellna8227 1. I did not place this as a yari competitor, merely pointing out that at the price point this suntour fork sits at makes it a viable option for somebody who would previously have been looking to buy a more budget fork such as rs yari, whilst maintaining features more commonly thought of as being at the very top of the price range, such as lyric or 36 factory. 2.It's questionable to call a brand like rs a 'small fish' , whilst it is a division of Sram, arguably the largest brand in mountain biking. My point is essentially that Suntour, with this fork and others, is able to provide features comparable to the best offerings of rs and fox, at half the price. I also think that suntour should be considered more as an option for a high end bike, where most would either go down the road of huge bramds like rs or fox, or buy boutique. Sr may be the biggest provider of forks, but not at the highest end of the market, with the majority placed at the bottom, making the chepest bikes cheap.
@polishguywithhardtospellna82275 жыл бұрын
@@magnusbushby7847 If I sounded pushy - It wasn't my intention, and it's hard for me to see what caused your reply like we're fanboys of 2 competing brands :-) I didn't say RS and Fox are small fish, they're much smaller than biggest - SR Suntour. RS being part of Sram means nothing - RS doesn't make nowhere near the ammount of forks SR makes. The rest of Sram can be biggest company in the world which makes 0 forks, thus is counted out of equasion. ad 1. I admit I misunderstood Your reply completely. ad 2. We generally agree, sadly not many ppl understands, that there is more to quality and performance THAN THE PRICE :-) SR has to build their presence in high end market starting from mid tier, which only recently started to receive positive reviews. But honestly SR had much more going in XC market for longer than in any gravity oriented parts. So they have a lot of customer awareness to buid. No point making a top product which might get very positive reviews......and still won't sell because ....mindshare. To me - if it wasn't for SR, we would pay through the nose for bottom end RS/Fox forks. There is A LOT to be gratefull for Suntour keeping their prices much lower than competition.....and people don't even realise. And that negative coil spring - customers say it's CRUCIAL for best performance, so that is a HUGE hit for SR marketing department for not spreading the word on it's existence. Don't know about RUX, but whole line starting from Aion, Auron and Durolux have that coil spring in two variants. My XL bike with Aion35Boost got harder spring rate, but I'm 6foot4" and skinny, so I want to change it to a softer one. There are short and fat people, that might get soft spring with their Small frame bike and will loose small bump sensitivity. Suntour forks might be better than many people think, but SR sucks at spreading knowledge. Also when people have some spare cash and replace Auron for Yari, they suffer that placebo effect. They might not even feel the difference, but they'll be convinced it is surely better cause it's RS. There is a lot of things to consider when wondering why SR is where it is.

@@polishguywithhardtospellna8227 i can tell we're men of the same minds 😂. I guess what i (and im assumining the guy who made the initial comment) is to agree with you that we are disappointed by suntours poor marketing at the higjer end of their fork production. They seem to focus so much on their really low end forks (which I'm guessing gives them a TON of income) that theor whole image has been dragged to the level of the carrerras that exclusively use these forks. I personally will be looking first at suntour for any future forks i might purchase, not just because i enjoy explaining to people that actually my forks dont belong in the bin, but because i believe that their performance is on par with the very best, and the pricing is an added bonus.

I really feel like I accomplished something tonight as I continue to learn more about the mechanics and suspensions of mountain bikes. I decided a few weeks ago to explore mountain biking as a means of getting into better shape and have fun at the same time. However, due to my age and some medical issues, I have to yet resolve (from my years of motorcycle riding injuries) I'm taking this very slowly and fortunately easy to understand but informative tutorials like yours has really been helpful. Once elective surgeries open again, I'm scheduled for two surgeries that should allow me to pursue this hobby on beginners trails in about 8 months. In the meantime, after a few months of physical therapy, I can do some level riding just to start the conditioning process. Anyway, I currently own an older hardtail that is a nice bike, but after watching many videos and assuming things progress positively, I wouldn't mind upgrading to a nicely sorted full suspension bike so I can utilize the modern features they offer. However, what I want and what I can afford is another matter and that depends on my progress level, but in any case, finding an "affordable" but nicely sorted bike will be challenging I'm sure. Thanks again for the well thought out tutorial on suspension set up. Actually, the process sounds like fun because you make it clear enough to understand.

The Specialized shock pump is the best one I have ever had. It's head is designed to be able to open and close the Schrader valve without letting any air out. WELL worth the $60ish they cost. It's probably set up wrong but I ride a 2015 Full 1x11 XT custom build Specialized Epic Carbon Comp FSR. It's a 100 mm bike front and rear. I run my air pressure F & R slightly high because the trails I ride are pretty smooth, very XC so lots of pedaling, and I am not real aggressive. Rebound I set totally open and rear compression all the way stiff (NO BOB AT ALL with the brain) and front compression about 1/2 way... But I don't really obsess about it to much.

One thing he didn't mention that helped me out big time, is to use air to take the place of low speed compression damping. When I felt I needed more lsc, I added 5 psi till I hit the sweet spot. When you add lsc, the fork feels less plush. So adding air in the place of lsc keeps it plush off top while giving you all the mid support you need. I did this and my fork is absolutely dialed, feels amazing now. I'm cornering faster and no more harshness through rough sections. Could not recommend this more!

Shock pump doesn't lose any pressure in fork/shock when disconnected. Utter myth this. The suspension valve closes before pump seal broken. The air escaping is that in the pump/pump hose only. Do not 'overpressure' for this. When reconnecting pump, the pressure reads lower as some of it is refilling pump/pump hose. More noticeable on shock than fork as lower volume of air at higher pressure.

I have 2 different setup methods depending on if I'm riding a place with jumps or not. The place I usually ride is massively rooty, with rocks, holes, med drops, logs, the usual woodsy trail trash but no booters. Here goes,, ,, Yeti SB-6 160 fox grip 2 with 2 v-spacers /153 fox x2 1 v- spacer 1. kitted up I set the sag at 25% f/r 2. Shock, All clickers full open (seated)I ride a short mild uphill section with small undulations, roots, rocks ect... 3. I recheck the sag, if the ring is over 25% I increase the pressure until I can ride that section while maintaining 25% sag or very close to it. 4. I keep riding the same section and dial in low-speed rebound until I have removed most or all of the rebound bob....so the shock is more quiet. Same goes for the fork. That's my pressure and v spacer baseline. Clicker tuning/bracket tuning. I go to a gnarly downhill section and take a few runs, what I'm trying to feel is if the fork or shock is kicking back too fast, if so I dial in more rebound until that dissipates. I record that as my rebound baseline. I then dial in compression a click or 2 at a time and see if it's better or worse, until I locate a sweet spot...comp baseline. So, now I have my baseline settings, I'll ride that for several full runs and fine-tune (bracket style) better or worse, as needed.... For riding at a place with booters, you must tune for jumping because you'll die otherwise. this is easier, enough pressure to keep from bottoming and enough rebound to keep from being bucked off on landings...dial in comp to slow the fork's compression. I will (on purpose) come up short on a landing, or flat land...and look for 2 things hard bottoming and/or if the bike is bucking. dial more dampening and/or pressure as needed.

I know the basics of what the high speed circuits do but it would be nice to have some advice on what to look for when riding. If I’m hitting high speed chunder like a rock garden or braking bumps then the fork can feel harsh whether it’s packing or rebounding too quickly so how do I know which one is occurring? And do I only use high speed compression damping for big hits to prevent bottoming or are there other situations where high speed compression can be useful? Cheers

That's actually surprisingly accurate. Suntour is definitely the suspension of choice for really budget bikes, but if all reviews I've read are even slightly accurate, their higher end stuff is actually quite good, especially for the money. Likewise many still associate Kia and Hyundai with their early models (good value, but definitely not the equal of the Japanese). Modern Korean cars, however, are now every bit the equal of their Japanese and European competition.

7:10 I'm pretty sure there is an error. Rebound should be as SLOW as possible without packing down. If you set it to fastest then it will never pack down, so there is no sense in your advice. It's really sad no one points to errors for so long after video been posted. Also I dare to say the choice of words is very poor. Fastest rebound in video actually means you set a minimum ammount of damping for the rebound. "Minimum" damping and "fastest" don't go along very well. So your fork or shock will pack down, if you set too much rebound damping=way more than half, because this will SLOW down the return of the shock/fork to it's neutral position. But you want that return action to be slow, so it is easy on your hands, on the rider. But too slow and it will start to pack down on consecutive hits/holes/obstacles. GMBN had a better video in the past. Really sad to see all that praise in the comments on confusing video. The script needs to be tripple checked for videos that will stay on top of search results for ages. Certain responsibility rests on GMBN crew, but seems to me, they don't recognise that responsibility. And they very rarely take down and reupload a video with errors(if ever imo).

Unfortunately there pervades a belief in the GMBN fandom that everything that Doddy says is the definative answer on everything - I find myself turning off more often than not now when he is doing a technical how to guide because of the details such as the ones that you have highlighted. I watched today because it was a pretty location! The new chap Henry has some real world race experience (and seems to admit when he gets it wrong) and at the moment seems to be worth watching

For sure. That had to be a mis-speak. I came here to say the same thing.

I'm glad you said that as it was confusing me, and I've never set my suspension up ever, always relied on my LBS to do it for me, but thought I'd better learn, but what Doddy said was counter intuitive so thought I must just be a numpty (maybe I am anyway)

I'm moto, we would videotape wheel tracking and replay in slow motion. This is the best method to date I've used for fine-tuning suspension and for identifying spring rate and valving flaws.

You are correct. They just quickly chose the wrong word. They SHOULD edit and fix the video. Only real error I saw.

Doddy, @ 1:21, you demonstrate as near as makes no difference perfect "dropping" technique. Cheers from the "Colonies" ;)

Damping only acts on the rate of suspension movement (shaft speed), it has no impact on where the suspension ends up for a given static load (sag), so there isn't really a need to unwind adjusters for sag setup.

Not sure if I mentioned it but I adjusted the rebound on my xcr 34 fork that came with my norco fluid it didn't have clicks or any indication of a stopping point it unscrewed itself internally and I had to pay for a rebuild on a brand new bike.

Hey Doddy, I was wonder what the difference is between a long and short derailleur hanger? Is it just a clearance thing? I appreciate your help!

Memo to self: search GMBN *first*, before you spend hours trying to translate the uber-tech speak that googling gets you... Thanks guys; brilliantly simple.

Just got my new bike, and going to go through the basic set up you showed here, but how do I know/feel if my rebound is set up correctly? Its the fine adjust that im unsure about

Does the 20-30% sag rule apply to hardtails as well? I feel like that much sag on a hardtail would drastically alter the geometry.
@fahlikz99425 жыл бұрын
Ryan Blasavage I don't think so because during the frame design process the suspension sag is also considered when deciding which head angle etc. they're going to use
@gmbntech5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the sag is considered when developing frame geometry. It's personal preference though.
@pbillings8085 жыл бұрын
Recommended fork sag is 15%-25%. Braking while descending becomes very sketchy with too much fork sag.

I'm having trouble with the rebound part. As a middle-aged beginner, I don't have the experience to feel how much is "too much bouncing", and don't dare yet riding very rough terrain that would "pack" my suspension. Manuals from FOX website help, giving a number of red dial "clicks" for each psi value (sag). Trouble is for the front one, the number of actual click positions on my fork doesn't match what the manual says (Fox 34 rythm). I wonder how much pressure should be in the tire for the front bouncing test.

2:57 how do you make the conversion to know how much rear travel your bike has? To be honest I don't know, but my shock only has 32mm of travel.
@rupedog5 жыл бұрын
Its doesnt matter for setting sag, all measured on shock
@Asthbendriel5 жыл бұрын
@@rupedog cool 😁, I was just curious if there was a formula to measure the rear travel for what Doddy said, the "57mm of travel on the rear wheel translates to 157mm of travel" thing
@draganpetrovic42514 жыл бұрын
You can measure the leverage ratio if you measure both max rear wheel travel and shock length and divide those numbers. The rest is alienware to me.
@YoNeilBiking5 жыл бұрын
Should the fork and rear shock bottom out at the same time? For instance, if you hit a big drop is it normal to have your rear shock bottom out and your fork not? I was wondering because I tend to bottom out my rear shock once in a 2 hr ride, but my fork does not. They both have the correct sag. Any help? My bike: 2018 Cannondale Jekyll Carbon 3.

you need to add more compression, or more air or the best Option is a bigger volume spacer

Rebound backed off before setting sag means counterclockwise/fast/open, right?
