I have a stepson who has no concept of vehicle maintenance beyond calling me when his "Change Engine Oil Soon" reminder goes off. With that said, I'm a big advocate of changing the oil in the 3.6 LFX engine every 4k-5k miles. Getting this kid to adhere to that duration is proving challenging. My intention is to get the reminder to go off sooner so he remembers to change his oil more frequently.
I got this idea from longtime friend of the channel ‪@TommyViper‬ AKA ‪@ViperJay5‬
So if you have a Tech II or a VCX Nano like me, follow along as I show you how you can set the oil life monitor to any percentage you want!!

Consider buying one of those plastic welding kits on Amazon. So easy to fix bumper damage like that (if you had all of the pieces) it broken headlight tabs, etc. I see a fog light bumper cover mod in the near future…

I have one of those welding kits in my wishlist, just procrastinating on pulling the trigger on it. 🤣 I could probably melt in a piece of mesh behind the missing piece and build up the area by melting some of the filler rod onto the mesh. Wish I had saved the old bumper (or at least a couple pieces of it anyway!!)

Using the $15-20 gun in the kit makes it so easy. I’ll mail you one for free if I can pick one up for free from Amazon. I get free shit on there all the time but it’s been slim pickins lately.

I’m standing by 3k to 3.5k oil changes for ANY newer motor as everything that controls the engines performance is based on using oil pressure. Thus, clean oil is absolutely critical. I don’t want to do another 3.6 swap again. It’s cheap insurance.

Did the 13's have the AVG MPG monitor? That's one thing my 2012 LT lacks that I'd like to have but I'm also keeping a notepad just to see if i'm running efficiently.

Yeah it should have an average MPG monitor! All of the 9Gs I've owned have/had one. It's on the last "page" before the screen goes blank when you scroll through the items on the uppermost button. There's should be TRIP A, TRIP B, Average Speed, Instant Economy, and Average Economy. The 2nd button from the top shows Oil Life and the tire pressures..

I'm with you, of course I think the OCI given by the system leads to an early grave for many 3.6s - and the reason why you hear a lot of uninformed opinions online from mechanics who label all 3.6 iterations as the same reliability as the LLT - Early versions of engines have been rough in many other models/generations, even the 1st gen 3800s had many issues - and didn't become the legendary ICE it became until Series II, III, basically the current 3.6 is on the Series III section of its life cycle.. i plan on doing mine at 50%. by the way Did they make any mechanical revisions to the lfx in the impala limited (after 2013) or is it just a copy paste of 2013? Also what's your opinion, if any of the last version (2014-2020) of the impala? I've never driven one, they are heavier and have some higher quality interiors but as far as the engine it produces a few more horsepower (at 200lbs or so heavier i doubt it compensates much). I also know it will come back because the name has too much value, same with just about any classic car, they eventually bring them back due to nostalgia and market demand. The myopic people who get swept up in news trends are funny to watch. Impala will be back.

The only revision they did to the LFX was give it auto stop/start and re-christen it the LFY. That engine is still in the Traverse and Enclave, which I don't understand why when the "Series III" (LGX) came out in 2016. 2024 is the last year for all 3.6's (sadly being supplanted by turbo 4's.) The great thing about the LFX is it is the exact same engine across FWD and RWD lines. You could take an engine from a CTS, swap out the upper intake and exhaust manifolds, and drop it right into an Impala. I've never driven a 10th Gen, TBH. I believe it was rated at 303 HP vs the 9G's 302, so a 1 HP gain vs a 200-300 lb weight gain. IMHO, they should've given the 9G a more extensive refresh in 2012 and kept that going until 2020 and called the 10G the Caprice. I get GM wanted to move the Impala upmarket, but I believe they shot themselves in the foot by doing so. The 8G & 9G models had the stigma of being rental fleet queens, but I'd argue that's wherein lied their brilliance. By flooding the market with so many of them, it kept the resale low so an average schmuck making an average wage could actually afford a nearly mint 1-year old Impala and continue to do so years down the line. I'd imagine the tooling for those cars were paid off decades ago, so it's not like GM was losing money making so many of them. The W-Body was essentially GM's Panther platform if you think about it. I would like to see the name brought back, but on a proper SEDAN and not a CUV!! If it's electric, so be it, but make it affordable!! TBH, I'd rather it be electric than be powered by a turbo 4 cylinder!! At least with electric propulsion it would be able to live up to and surpass the HP of the legendary Impala SSes of the 60's. Having a 4 cylinder would be a slap in the face (like the 10Gs were!!)

wow you really have a deep understanding of this stuff. It's a joy to read someone with passion and knowledge of this caliber. I agree with so much. The low profile look of the 9th gen is a perfect fit for me and it's also not a car that you'll worry about being targeted for theft. I don't like driving anything too 'nice' looking for that reason and i'm just accustomed to knock around bargains, yet i have had compliments on my 2012 LT from coworkers...I just told them its a beater in disguise! Don't think i'd feel at home in a 10th gen Premier. American Automakers have started to see the error in their ways for climbing aboard California influenced policy and trying to convert to full EVs far too soon for middle american infrastructure. Very dumb move, they'll probably dial it back and go to hybrids for a decade or two...i mean if they're smart. Evs don't work because of many reasons but obviously convenience (charging), price, lack of DIY - takes power away from the consumer in the right/knowledge to repair category!! Too many really smart people who are not at all savvy in today's america. @@CertifiedShadetree

@@LamelKendrick I think the biggest problem with EVs is the damn infrastructure!! Talk about the right hand doing one thing and the left hand doing absolutely nothing!! I agree the Voltec platform would've been the way to go - GM had a dozen or more years head start on everyone with it and then just abandoned it for pure EVs. Now Lexus and Acura are bragging about their PHEVs in commercials aired during NFL games like it's some great innovation they came up with. And I'm sure the rubes believe it, too!! Funny observation I made over the last couple years. I was in San Diego 2 years ago and didn't see a single Tesla or any EV, and maybe 1 or 2 Priuses total. Saw more old Volvos belching out smoke than hybrids or EVs.🤣 Was in New Jersey a month ago and all I saw were Teslas (and Acura CUVs.) I saw exactly ONE pickup truck, and ONE Impala (a 10G) the entire time. The Tesla thing really struck me as odd, but I can understand there being no domestic makes if nobody buys pickup trucks. Where I live, trucks account for over 50% of the market, so the domestic dealership network is very strong, hence lots of Equinoxes, Escapes, Cherokees, and shit-tons of Panthers and 9G Impalas (not to mention every 3rd vehicle being a Ram, F-150, or Silverado.) I do see a Tesla every now and then, but they aren't anywhere near as prevalent as they were in Jersey! I gotta wonder if GM's plan of phasing out V6s is a ploy to get us to accept EV's. I can't envision them killing off V8s until EV's are widely accepted, as their bread and butter pickup trucks will be the absolute last domino to fall in that regard. But it all circles back to fortifying the damn electrical infrastructure!!

indeed. the EV push is kind of a microcosm of the disconnect between middle/rural american and large corporations. You have to win over the rural america by making EVs more pro DIYEr and pro freedom minded (how exactly i do not know, larger range because road trips are classicly american.) The EV idea is about waiting in line and being "plugged in" and reliant on others (to fix them). To me that's the disconnect with the american, not sure if i was able to articulate that correctly, i'm sure you get the gist. The other thing is the attachment americans had to powerful sounding ICEs, and how that's lacking in Evs...but one thing I can say EVs do well is speed and acceleration, that kinda wins the old gas engine crowd a bit. But then when you look at the survellience and invasive technologies in some of these EVs its a bleak outlook, where they have modes that will basically tell you how to drive, that's not gonna win over people. I could honestly see a future where we are like Cuba just repairing and rebuilding old gas engines from previous eras, if this continues to spin out of control and that disconnect I wrote about keeps growing. I'm sure you could live with 9th gen impalas forever, lol. I could honestly see people doing some radical stuff to build maintain old cars if those invasive technologies keep on the path they are at where the computer takes over human ability/decision. @@CertifiedShadetree

Oh absolutely, if I had more money than I knew what to do with I'd buy up some acreage and hoard old W-Bodies and fix/drive 'em until the end of time!! That's a good assessment regarding rural America. All of those points you made about winning them over are very real, and add on top of that certain news media outlets that always harp on (insert politician/political party) is "out to take your guns" (or gas-powered vehicles, gas stoves, etc, etc.) and it's easy to see a huge revolt against EV's or whatever shift the auto industry takes. Self-reliance is a huge thing, so maybe an eventual softening of their stance on solar could lead to a "hey, check it out, you can generate your own electricity to power your truck and not rely on oil from OPEC nations." 🤷‍♂️ I dunno, I'm not absolutely AGAINST EV's - I kind of like the idea of topping off my "fuel" at home overnight and the thought of having the interior pre-heated/cooled right before I leave for work - but that isn't enough to sway me right now or any time in the near future! In the meantime, I really need to prep my house for a GAS generator so I can still operate everything when I lose power due to the influx of people charging their EV's on a woefully inadequate power grid!! 🤣

Not really necessary to do all this. I change the oil in all of my vehicles at 5K mile intervals and reset the oil life to "0" at that time. I don't pay attention to the oil light, I just like it to stay off. "Multiples of 5K miles is so easy to follow.

It absolutely isn't necessary for a gearhead who's in tune to their vehicle's wellbeing to be doing this. This is more for someone who has no interest in or is oblivious to vehicle maintenance and relies on their parent to do it for them. The 3.6 LFX absolutely needs lower OCI's than what the PCM dictates, otherwise it'll face an early demise..
