This video goes over the procedure to set the valve lash on a 6.7 cummins engine. The procedure is exactly the same for a 5.9 cummins except on a 5.9 the exhaust spec is .020 instead of .026
Couple things I forgot to mention clearly in the video:
1. The feeler gauge should have some resistance between the rocker arm and valve bridge, you don’t want it too loose. The biggest thing is keep that feeling consistent throughout all the valves.
2. If you end up on TDC 6 but want to start on TDC 1 like I did in the video, all you have to do is rotate the engine clockwise another full turn and you will be on TDC 1.

@@darkirondiesel once I adjusted the valve settings, I got kinda worried it was not the right setting because the valve spring bridges still had some play in them.. but I guess that play is necessary so it does not wear out the tops of the bridges. Basically the same play you have when the valves are closed

Great video , how do you torque the nut to 18 foot pounds? Do you just go with a regular socket and torque wrench after you tighten it , or do you have to use a specific tool socket to be able to hold the Allen bolt while torquing it.?
@darkirondiesel
@darkirondiesel 2 жыл бұрын
Personally I just snug them up by hand, but if you wanted to be technical I would first tighten it up by hand gently with a wrench, then remove the Allen key and use a socket and torque wrench to torque it, then after recheck valve lash to make sure the Allen bolt didn’t tighten up on you.

Would it be a good idea to replace the valve seals while doing this given it’ll be apart? If so, I’ve heard of seal damage if not using a sleeve when pressing the seal over the groove in the valve stem. True? If so, do you sell a tool for this reason. I know Cummins has a tool, but it’s ungodly expensive for what it is. I’ve heard people use items such as straws to heat shrink.

Also bit of advice. If you set lash with engine cold, set .002” loose from spec to account for thermal expansion, then when engine hot the lash adjustment will be on spec or very close
@yeahboi355
@yeahboi355 3 жыл бұрын
The setting account for the engine hitting up. By doing what you say the valve lash will be wrong when the engine is hot.

Question. I’ve been an Auto Mechanic/ Technician for over 30 yrs. I just did a 6.7 Cummins head. But I used the starter & a remote starter button. Bumped the starter till the cylinder I’m working on both valves closed. Than set or adjust that cylinder & move on. I’ve been doing it that way since my racing days with SBC. Just easier for me. I work by myself.

You could do that but I’d worry that if I showed that procedure someone with less mechanical knowledge might end up with a bent pushrod or worse.

What do you charge for a head gasket, fuel injector replacement for a bigger turbo and bigger fuel injector
@darkirondiesel
@darkirondiesel 3 жыл бұрын
There’s so many variables. What kind of injectors? Stock, reman, new, higher hp? What size of turbo? Are we doing vgt or non vgt? If non vgt then we gotta do tuning. Is the truck deleted? Which head studs do you want? Etc etc. Would take an hour or two to price something like that out. I’d do it for someone local to me but unfortunately I don’t have time on KZbin if you know what I mean.

I watched this even though my 2019 had this maintenance procedure removed due to the use of hydraulic roller lifters. I am torn on what's better. I feel that this wasn't really much maintenance especially at it's mileage intervals. The flat tappet lifters are proven super reliable in this application. Hydraulic roller lifters can get wiped out with a tiny amount of oil contamination. I guess time will tell but I just don't see a roller lifter lasting 500k miles or longer. Any ones thoughts?

Cylinder 1 and cylinder 6 are on tdc at the same time. Just opposite strokes. Too much information for people who are attempting this is confusing. Go off your rocker arms. If the rockers are loose on cylinder 1 and tdc position is correctly at 12 o’clock, then you are on the compression stroke and can run intake 1,2,4 and exhaust 1,3,5. Then just rotate clockwise 360 back to tdc and repeat procedure for the other valves. It’s much more simple that way. If you rotate up to tdc avd cylinder 1 exhaust rocker is tight then you know you’re on the exhaust stroke. Other than that it’s good information. Specs are accurate

@@StayingBack71 you are adjusting the injectors because they are mechanically fired by the cam/cams on over head cam diesels, on a mechanical injected truck the injection pump controls the injectors firing, on a electronic smaller diesel like these where there’s pushrods they are fired by the solenoids on top of the injectors
