1. excellent guide! 2. For the Veritas wheel-style, you can get an extra little clip that lets you lock the distance between the wheels but still move the fence.

I'm sure that workd really accurately, personally though I get it just as accurately by just pushing down the chisel into the wood and then I've got the exact copy when I align the mortise chisel

Hey what are the first joints you would recommend to learn how to do?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
I'd say jump into dovetails. A lot of people make it seem like it's some crazy difficult joint, but it is really a basic simple joint. I find it even easier than finger joints as one half of it doesn't matter. You make the other half match it. Between that and a mortise and tenon you can make most any furniture.

Just make sure your chisel is square. If it's at an angle then the distance will be smaller

The big question with those Veritas dual-rollers: bevels in or bevels out? Since we use the same setting on the mortise and the tenon, one would have the bevel on the "wrong" (non-waste) side. Does it even matter?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo Жыл бұрын
Honestly, it doesn't make that big a difference. Unless you're that accurate with a saw. Some people will be pretty picky about it but I haven't found it to make any practical difference.

He has gotten good at putting the chisel in the marking gauge and not bumping it when setting the fence. That method really frustrates a lot of people, though. It's one of the great things about woodworking. There's no right way to do it.

ok very random question, but i don't use a marking knife or gauge, and i'm wondering if you'd say its neccesary or ig what the overall benefit would be
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 ай бұрын
It's faster and more accurate layout particularly for hand tools. For power tools you often rely on setting up the jig rather than marking the tool. But a knife or a cut line is far more accurate than a pencil. Not to mention every time you measure something you lose accuracy

Why not just measure how wide the chisel is then just place the ruler on the wood and mark it then use that other marking tool to make the straight lines?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 8 ай бұрын
that just introduces error. any time you measure you are adding chances for error.
@Thewindwhispers.
@Thewindwhispers. 8 ай бұрын
@@WoodByWrightHowTo interesting, but I feel like there is still errors to be made with that other tool. Whenever you do it yourself you are subject to human error. I think the added benefit of knowing the exact length and size of all your peices so if you want to know that you can. I don't doubt the fact that it is a very cool and unique tool that can easily make the job alot easier so I'll give you that. Also sorry if half of that doesn't make sense I'm extremely tired and that tends to happen thank you so much for your response may peace be with you at all times 🙏
