Hi, Very helpful video.. Was wondering, how long it takes for moss to grow, say to double in volume/size?
@TheUrbanNemophilist3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Moss is slow growing when it comes to home propagation setups The strands can grow tall quite fast but takes very long to cover surface area. Sometimes they may not grow if the right balance of temperature, humidity and light is not achieved. It’s always challenging to mimic conditions that helps moss to grow in nature.

I still don't understand why substrate is needed when moss has no roots, and gathers its water and nutrients from the top. Can you point me to any research that suggests the moss is actually taking anything from the substrate?
@TheUrbanNemophilist Жыл бұрын
Moss has rhizoids which they use to latch onto any available substrate. The species used here prefers acidic substrate so soil helps. The substrate also helps retain moisture that benefits the moss. This method works for me. Am sure there are other methods. Feel free to follow what works for you.
@MrClockw3rk Жыл бұрын
@@TheUrbanNemophilist Understood, but what constitutes it's "preference" for acidic substrate? Is something from that substrate being taken in? And if not, does it actually "prefer" it in the sense that removing it does something detrimental?

@MrClockw3rk Moss prefers a soil pH range of 5.0 to 5.5. If a soil test shows the soil pH to be greater than 6.0, sulfur can be used to acidify the soil. I'm sure other moss can be different and most will thrive. I would think it take longer to grow on a rock than dirt. Also would be harder to move from rock to desired spot. Dirt can keep the space, maybe moisture, The home it been siting on. To be easier to move. That's just what works for them. What works best for you?
