It's always a good idea to clean such plastic boxes with water and a bit of dish cleaner and clear water afterwards, before using. Most of this boxes are covered in some kind of gunk that makes it feel very slippy when it gets wet. Possibly it's for getting this things out of it's mold easier during the production process, possibly it's residues of a detergent, I just can't tell for sure.

I bought a bunch of moss off of Amazon and I do have several species of springtails that I bought around the same time that I am culturing and was debating adding some to the moss propagation boxes. Seems like a good idea and then when I use it in terrarium builds some springtail end up in the build even before I add them the conventional way. Good video thanks. Oh and I obsessively check my moss too. Seems a natural hazard for those of us who are curious about our collections. 🙂

I love this video!! So I got all supplies for terrariums about 6 months ago and then never made one bc I was nervous 🤣 so I made my moss prop box and honestly I have checked on it much at all. Only when I’m super curious what’s going on in there. It’s all on sphagnum moss and staying nice and earthy and moist. Definitely need to aerate more and I think I need more light bc some of the species are browning. Is that all I need to do to help the browning? Or should I take those out. Most are green and growing.

I have a question. This isn't the first Miss Propagation Video I have watched (but it might be the best.) In every video, the "propagation" box is completely filled with moss. Doesn't this make it a "Moss Storage Box" since there is no room for new moss to propagate and spread? If one leaves space, will the moss spread?
@kaylaroach Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! In my experience, I’ve always had some moss die-off during the initial acclimation period (especially if harvested in very cold temperatures). This leaves “empty” patches for the surviving moss to spread over. I also use moss quite regularly, so my box doesn’t stay this full for long! 😊

Awesome video but springtails do not eat mold. They will dramatically reduce mold in an environment by consuming material that without them, would start to mold. But if you had a moldy container and you released springtails in that container they would die. So if you do see mold with your springtails don't leave it for them to eat because it may just out compete them leading to a die off.
@donlussi2424 Жыл бұрын
So, I’m perplexed. You filled up an entire bin with various types of moss, so how does it propagate? There’s no room for it to grow out. Thinking about this I would purchase a few containers and place same section (s) in one container only leaving a lot of room for it to actually grow out aka “propagate”
