In this video we'll look at How To Setup a Raspberry Pi Home Surveillance System with MotionEyeOS using a raspberry pi and a webcam.
You're going to need the following:
- Raspberry Pi (or other supported single-board computer)
- MicroSD Card (the larger the better and class 10 is preferred)
- Raspberry Pi Power Supply
- USB Webcam (higher resolution is better.)
Here are the steps:
- download the latest stable release called motioneyeos-[board]-yyyymmdd.img.gz, where [board]is the name of your board
- extract the image file from the archive
- write the image file to your SD card
- Modify the wpa_supplicant.conf to reflect your network settings and then copy it to your microSD card’s root
- Insert the microSD card into your Raspberry Pi
- Plugin your Raspberry Pi
First Boot
When booting a fresh image installation, a few initialization steps will take place and therefore the system won't be ready for about 1-2 minutes. Please do not disconnect or reboot your board during these first two minutes!
These steps are:
- preparing the data partition on the SD card
- configuring SSH remote access
- auto-configuring any detected camera devices
Of course your motionEyeOS needs an IP address before you can communicate with it so you'll have to use the ethernet connection with DHCP enabled, unless you have preconfigured a wireless network setup.
To access it, enter the IP address of your board in the address bar of your browser.
To find the address, connect to your router (most routers can display the addresses of all connected devices) and look for a device name beginning with "meye-". Alternatively, you can use a network scanner such as the free mobile app Fing.
Use admin with no password when asked for credentials. Feel free to explore all the available configuration options.
Download the wpa_supplicant.conf file from the following link. DO NOT REQUEST EDIT ACCESS. Download/copy the file to your computer and edit it there.
DOWNLOAD WPA_SUPPLICANT.CONF FILE: docs.google.com/document/d/1g...
DO NOT ASK FOR EDIT PRIVILEGES. DOWNLOAD IT TO YOUR COMPUTER AND EDIT THE FILE THERE.

Thanks for a very comprehensive video... well done. I have watched many other video and none have been so complete and so clearly explained each section. Now have mine setup. I’m trying to install a camera at an RC flying field so members can see the wind sock and who may be flying. Was hoping to stream live video but we are in a remote area and will try and attach to a someone’s local xfinitywifi router so we will not be able to do “port forwarding" to allow live stream. (can't find any other way to do it). We will just take still pictures at a 5-10 interval and send to Google Drive and then Facebook. Thanks again

Hey thanks for the video! I see in comment from two years ago you suggest to setup a Dynamic DNS and then forward the port for MotionEyes if you wanted to access the camera remotely, but said you had some other thoughts on it as well. Is this method still what’d you would recommend or do you consider it insecure or less simple than a newer found method? Thanks!

Hello, I did everything right but I can't get the ip address (that's you're supposed to get at 5:48). It failed to set the current date and time so I thought maybe that was the issue, so I used another microSD card and fixed the date and time. When I tried again but it still failed and I didn't get the ip address. Everything else seems to work just fine but I'm stuck there. Any advice?

Light Switch Detection is really useful actually. Set to >80% it will treat a light change (such as a sun coming out from behind a cloud) as a non-event, avoiding lots of false positives and empty pictures caused by lighting changes. Conversely, you would disable this feature if you wanted to treat light changes as motion events. For example, perhaps you have a sensor light outside your window, you would want to record when the sensor light turned on, so you set Light Switch Detection to 0%.

But the problem is I'm making a dashcam and cannot have a wifi connected to the pi, so is it possible to use motioneyeos offline? Or even making its own wifi acess point would do, in fact make it more convenient. Would be glad if you could help me out!

@DBTechYT
@DBTechYT 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but I'm going to give it a go anyway. Wyze cameras, by default, don't have RTSP enabled. There is a custom firmware that you can side load that will enable RTSP, though. I've noticed from my own experience that Wyze camera RTSP can be kinda of slow and choppy when streaming through a 3rd party system like MotionEye or iSpy.

After downloading and preparing everything properly, can I then use a secondary router that isn't connected to the internet at all? Like just pluging the router into the wall-socket without connecting the it to the modem? I do *NOT* want my security cameras to be on the main network, or even be connected to the same router as my other devices with internet access! Only limiting access to certain MAC-addresses and setting up firewall and various security rules aren't secure enough - I do *NOT* want either the cameras, the router or any device that is viewing the cameras through the network to even being able to *accidently* connect to the internet whatsoever!

@DBTechYT
@DBTechYT 4 жыл бұрын
That's actually a good question. There are a few things that you would need. First, you would want to setup some kind of Dynamic DNS on your router so that you don't have to use your (presumably home) IP address out in the wild. There are several services out there, so be sure to pick on that your router supports. Once you've got that setup, you'll need to figure out what port your MotionEyeOs is running on. Then you need to setup port forwarding on your router and/or modem depending on your network setup. For instance, I have a modem/router combo that I got from my ISP. I only use it for the modem purposes and have my own router in place. Because of that, I have to login to my modem and forward the port to my router. From there I have to login to my router and setup port forwarding to my Raspberry Pi. Then you've got a couple of options. You should just be able open a browser and navigate to whatever URL your dynamic DNS setup for you and make sure you're on the right port. For instance something like: customurl.dynamicdns.com:8080 There's also an Android app that I just recently discovered that you would need to setup on your phone. You'd still need to do all of the port forwarding stuff, but you'd have an app you could use instead of just a browser window. I was actually thinking about doing this exact thing the other day and making a video about it, but the port forwarding portion of things will take me some time to figure out how to explain in a video. Anyway, I hope this all helps.

@@DBTechYT Hi thanks for the response ....i do have other questions ok let me start with this I will just get straight to the point I was having issues with the cams, had advanced settings on, turned on Fast Network Cam, camera issued fixed but lost advanced features (fast network cam disables advanced features) Ended up reflashing sd with the latest release, no more cam issues did not turn on fast network cam had all settings as shown in video... google works too my plan have three rasp pi's (two 3+ and one 3) wanted to do multi cam setup was seeing other people do this with pi zeros as cams and pi 3+ as hub I don't have zeros nor plan to use them so my setup 3+ & 3 as cam and 3+ as hub like you, I plan on saving stuff to google drive, cool with stuff being saved on sd card just for kicks my confusion now lies on the hub ( I have an idea on why its needed for the pi zeros, for the extra horsepower ? correct me if im wrong noob DiY'er here) So my questions, why is a hub is needed?, do I need the hub if I'm using full-sized pi's? *side note for anyone who is doing this and have set their pi up for wireless and assigned a static ip but have the wrong date showing, make sure that your gateway is the correct ( default 192.168.1.1) .....that was my issue did an ipconfing to find out my default gateway, was different than default changed it and fixed the wrong date issue thanks sorry for the long post, cheers
@DBTechYT
@DBTechYT 5 жыл бұрын
You don't NEED a hub, but it's good if you want to have one place to login and access all your cameras. You could setup each one and never have any of them work together if you wanted, but the hub is just to have a single access point to see all your cameras. Also, Pi Zeros are MUCH weaker than the 3 is, so there's no "extra horsepower" using zeros over 3 or 3+.

Your tutorial is very good so far, and it has helped me understand precisely what to do. However, I have tried every single image file that could be possibly compatible with my pi and none of them will boot. I've used win imager and the raspberry pi imager for almost every combination of image files to put them on my SD card. However, my Raspberry Pi 3 B +, blinks 4 times slow, and 7 times fast, indicating there is something wrong with the startup files in the SD card. I have no idea what is going on as when I used the official Pi imager to put Raspberry Pi OS on there, it booted up and worked fine. Just MotionEyeOS, and I really want to fix this. Do you have any solutions?

@DBTechYT
@DBTechYT 4 жыл бұрын
The wpa_supplicant file will ONLY run the VERY first time you boot up the Pi with the OS on it. It will not load on subsequent boots. If it doesn't work the first time, you'll have to reinstall MotionEyeOS and try again. OR you can plug in a network cable and log into it that way the first time and the configure the wireless settings once you're logged in while plugged into a wired network.

Depends on what kind of cameras you're using. If you're using RTSP cameras, you can add several with just the RTSP cameras and 1 Raspberry Pi. If you're using webcams, you can plug as many webcams as you have usb ports. Once you max out your ports, you'll need additional Pis.

That's going to depend on how good your wifi coverage is. Any number of things can affect that. How good your wifi router is will affect the distance of your signal. Multiple walls, or walls made of brick or concrete can affect how far your wifi will go. Also, other 2.4GHz networks in the area may cause interference and affect your wifi. It's just something you'll have to test for yourself. I have no way of knowing all the things that will affect YOUR setup. Test it out and see what you come up with :)
