Some of you have let me know that the water should be deeper. I'm aware that aquatic turtles not only enjoy deeper water but they thrive in it. I am trying to demonstrate the minimum requirements for baby turtle care. I use the rule were the water should be at a minimum depth the overall length of the turtle's shell. And being that the turtle is so small, the water can be more shallow. But if you are more capable to handle deeper water then by all means, do it! The was also a concern with that lack of lighting for this setup. And yes. Aquatic turtles and most other reptiles require vitamins and nutrients that naturally come from the sun. And if the reptile does not have access to natural sunlight, then proper lighting is needed. (A heat bulb and uvb bulb) In this video I state that this setup will be placed in front of a window in direct sunlight. But be aware that direct sunlight will cause a lot of algae growth. But, I was recently given information that all UV light is blocked by windows. So with this new information. I an planning a fallow up video that will go into more detail about turtle care along with a larger and more advanced setup!

TM4 Productions you should NEVER use small aquarium rocks likes that they can invest them and die the only rocks you should use are river rocks because they are to large for turtles to eat

i would get the largest tank you can afford and have room for. you can fill tanks all the way as long as you have a floating basking area and a lid. or, you can follow the 10 gallon per inch of shell rule. Also, the water has to be around 80 degrees for baby red eared sliders. when they are adults you only need it at around 65 degrees. also, these turtles can live up to around 30 years so you must be willing to take care of it for a long time. however many gallons of water are in your tank i would get a filter made for about 10-20 gallons higher than that. so if you have 40 gallons in your tank i would recommend a 50 gallon filter because sliders and painted turtles produce a lot of waste. feed it as many pellets you think would fit in its skull if it were hollow. I hope this info was a good guide for you. I'm sending this to a lot of people in the comments for a quick guide

Thanks for the input! And with the concern with the water depth is just the minimum requirement for basic aquatic turtle care. I fallow a rule that the water depth should at LEAST be deep enough so that the turtle can face straight up (parallel with the glass) and still be submerged. But if you can provide deeper water, then by all means, do it! They really do love to swim! And yes, all reptile need the proper vitamins and nutrients that they naturally get for direct sunlight. If this can not be provided, then yes proper lighting is required. A heat build and a uvb bulb. In this video I state that this setup will be placed by a window with direct sunlight and would be kept on a house that stays at warm temperature. And why not decorate? I'm am generally interested in that concern. And thanks for the input! And I will address these concerns in a future video.

Recently saved a baby yellow belly turtle from my dads constuction site and have a set up pretty much in place all i need is a uv light and some fake plants to complete the setup as you have it. Just wondering is it important to cover the entire bottom with rocks or can it be only partially covered. The rocks i bought dont cover all the bottom because there isnt enough. Also how much of a land to water ratio should there be?
@tm4productions795
@tm4productions795 4 жыл бұрын
Turtles don't really "need" gravel at the bottom of the cage. It's more for is to look at. So of your are happy with the amount of rocks, then your good! And as long as the turtle can get out of the water completely to dry the that's all the land he needs.

Hello bro i have some questions IS the water pumper necessary? Does it has to be transparent tank?
@tm4productions795
@tm4productions795 Жыл бұрын
So I would highly recommend some sort of filtration. Turtles tend to make more waste then fish. But you can change the water day if you cant get a filter yet. But when it comes to the tank, no It doesn't have to be transparent. I've seen turtles in plastic tubs and even kiddy pools. As long as they have enough space and water.

First size matters, it must be as high as the length of the shell for the turtle feel comfort, make sure it has a dry area to rest and bask. As it grows increase water level according to its size.

So I've seen a lot of different websites and turtle "experts" say if you want rocks in the aquarium don't let them be smaller than your thumb, river rock basically, because the turtle could eat the rocks and it gets stuck in the digestion so you hav to take them to a vet or they die because it can't b digested. Is this different for baby turtles because they are so small so it doesn't matter what kind of rock you put in?

That's great! But keep in mind that this is just a starter setup. There is much more that you should do if you want to give your turtle a long and healthy life. Proper lighting was not properly included in this video. A heat light and uvb light. But lighting can be pricey, so of you cant do that yet then I remembered daily access to direct sunlight. Outside in the sun. Uvb light does not goes through windows.

Hi I have been taking care of my grandkids turtle since beginning of the summer. I didnt know anything about it. Now that summer months are over I notice it's not moving around as much. It has slime on the back/ on shell, should I be washing that off? How much water should I really be using for a small one like in your video? I have no light for it... can you recommend what I need to get. I talk to this turtle and it looks at me so I just want to make sure its cared for properly. Do you have a list of things it needs? Like I said it's not summer anymore so unconcerned it might be to cold for it
@tm4productions795
@tm4productions795 5 жыл бұрын
Ok. Turtles are cold blooded so the temperature effects their activity. In the winter it will try to go into hibernation if it gets to cold. I would seguest a two lights. One with a heat buld and one UVB bulb. This will keep it warm and healthy. I'm not to sure about the slime. Maybe it is algea growing on it's shell? I would gently wash it off. And the water should be at be deep enough to where if the turtle puts it's belly against the glass and still be under water. But the deeper the better. As long as it has a dry place to sunbath under the heat lamp. They usely keep all the proper lighting in a reptile section of petsmart. I hope this helps!

Additionally, as for the size of the tank and amount of water your gonna need, you measure (carefully) the turtle's shell from the back end to head end and for every inch of shell, you have 10 gallons of water. I know seems like a lot, but turtles need that much water due to how much waste they produce. You will also have to do water changes a lot more frequently if you don't provide the correct amount of water.

We found a baby turtle in our swimming pool and it is so cute, we don't have an aquarium so we put it in a large clear bowl and put rocks in it and some bread and lettuce , he seems to be OK , what do you feed them?

Are you sure a clear tank is healthy for a turtle I heard it stresses them out because they try and spend their whole lives trying to escape??

i have a red eared slider the same size as that and i've bought it (cant tell the gender of babies) an entire tub. i would say get them the largest tank you can afford and you have space for. If you want you can also follow the 10 gallon per inch of shell rule meaning, for every inch of your turtle's SHELL from tail to head is 10 gallons of water in their tank, like i said, get what you can afford and have room for. sliders and painted turtles are very good swimmers so don't worry about filling the tank all the way... just get a lid.

UVA/UVBs cannot fully pass through glass, so there's the barrier of the window and the turtle enclosyre therefore these guys will not be able to get the needed 78-82 degree temp/humidity without the help of a lamp....which is especially crucial for hatchlings as their shells are so tender and need max temps to fully dry/form/develop

I have the same kind of turtle, I’ve had him in a small tank for a while but I’m about to change him into a similar tank you have here. He wasn’t swimming much cuz of how small the tank was, & I know these turtles are in & out of water, so he should be ok with the right amount of water & right materials?

Yeah! I try to have enough water for the turtle the be facing straight up, and still be under water. So, a turtle with a 2 inch shell should have at least 2 inches of water. But I will say. The more water you provide, the better. I have a couple of turtles (4 -6 inch) I've been taking care of and they share a 30 gallon aquarium. They have alot of swimming space and they seem too love it.

We found a baby Painted turtle in our driveway. We bought a tank, but bought a small water dish to put in it. We have stone and sand in the tank. Should we set up the tank the way you show in the video?

Thanks man! I’m getting a baby turtle on Saturday for my birthday, and yes, you are right! They don’t need deeper water, I was at petland and the store put them in not so deep water.

Right, but I would still recommend deeper water if that is something you can manage and keep clean! Best of luck!

i would get the largest tank you can afford and have room for. you can fill tanks all the way as long as you have a floating basking area and a lid. or, you can follow the 10 gallon per inch of shell rule.

I wanna ask, if it's okay to not have a uvb light, if we give him proper sun light for an hour?
@tm4productions795

So if you don't have all the proper lighting then taking the turtle out side will work for some time. But turtles with need more than just a hour.

I just got a redeared slider, it was in the skimmer in the swimming pool. I was wishing so much for one. I just moved down here to Texas and I had no idea they were out here. He/she is not even an inch across. So would you call him a hatchling? How many days old do you think he/she is?

do you have to use a water conditioner for tap water??
@tm4productions795
@tm4productions795 4 жыл бұрын
No, but it is a lot faster. I believe you can let tap water set out for about a day and let the chemicals evaporate out. Either way the chlorine in the tap water in not good for the turtles.
