I just watched your video "Setting up the perfect Windows 10 Installation | Faster, Lighter, and Functional" Does an SSD make the work flow faster? Most go right to the bench test to show the SSD is faster than a HDD, and booting or loading software they are. I render videos on Linux with OneShot and I have the same times rendering to a HDD or SSD within a few seconds, but the bench test are 4 to 7 times faster with the SSD. Is this the same with Windoze, or does Windoze have so much running the drives that using an SSD does make work flow faster, because it doesn't on Linux.

One thing is for sure...this is the first time I've seen a series of consecutive videos dealing with different facets of Linux Mint. I don't know if you're aware of it but you're debunking the myth that Linux Mint is so a boring distribution. In fact, the specific purpose of my intervention is to congratulate you because even though I am an DE jumper, my production computers are only running Linux Mint since version 3.0 (2007), after Mandrake, Mandriva, DesktopBSD, Mandriva Powerpack, PcLinuxOS and Ubuntu. Right now, I'm trying seriously Debian Mate stable (modified avatar for fun) because of you. And BTW, to write this post, I paused Cities: Skylines on Steam on my main computer. Work, fun, work, fun and work....not only on Win workstations ! And yes I have a Win and a Mac computer (they are on 5 % of the time at home)

Wow, this video goes further into the details of gaming on Linux Mint than any other I have ever seen. Some of the terminal work was done a little fast, but users can always pause the video and watch at their own pace. I was curious why you didn't use the Flatpak Steam version? Please make all of the links available to all of the websites you pulled instructions from and if you could please add detail to time codes for areas of the install, would be a great help. The Liquorix kernel is a replacement built using the best configuration and kernel sources for desktop, multimedia, and gaming workloads. It is not just for gaming. I am curious to see the setting changes on Mint 20 which will be here in less than thirty days. Thanks again Chris for all your hard work in the making of these videos!

As much as I like Mint and use Linux for other stuff... this video shows exactly why I still use Windows... so many steps and fixes to do something I wouldn't need to do in Windows is still sad, I even bought consoles for playing so I don't need to fight against the PC to make them run as they should, even less fight to make them just run... Many people will scream by horror after reading that but that is true, and as much as I tried and made some games work after spending HOURS trying to hotfix everything, I decided to keep dual Boot for Steam/Bnet/Anet games and play the others in console. Also we still don't have hardware acceleration in browsers to decode video which is why at some point most people (like myself) simply go back to Windows, there was hope with a Chromium fork and that's all.
@MichaelJHathaway4 жыл бұрын
Look at all the steps you have to go through just to make Windows slightly less annoying lol... And at least with Linux there is a light at the end of the tunnel, where as on Windows, short of disconnecting from the internet entirely, it will never be secure. There are compromises back and forth. And hardware acceleration in browsers often leads to much of the crashing, especially in chrome.
@Lanzetsu4 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelJHathaway Playing in console is not a lot of steps, and using Linux was a choice, but again it is not that I need a lot of security from an OS, I only need it to do some stuff, play games and lately watch video over streaming platforms, so guess what? A basic windows system works for it, even Windows 7. Reading you only strengthen my POV that at the end it is better to disable some Windows annoying options to fully able to use your PC capabilities. No that I hate Linux but as much as I search for a real reason to use it the less I am sure I will be going back to only Windows again. Also thanks for the advice on hardware acceleration in browsers, I can get now it is a dead end.

You're not a Million miles off here. I found some of this only touched on how to do it and not explained a lot why these steps are needed. I don't think he even mentioned what ESYNC is. Sure you can briefly read the text at the 6 minute mark. From an explanation point of view Chris didn't do as good a job as usual i.e. when he forgot to do a step that caused en error and he had to go back or when he mentioned that we probably should run that command from the beginning. All that is a nightmare for beginner-esque users and quite confusing. Video seems a bit off-the-cuff and could've been better.

I should add, these steps are OPTIONAL! Just like Windows I tweak a TON. I have powershell scripts for windows that make this stuff look like child's play. The thing, though, is that I've been unable to run Starcraft Remastered with my Nvidia 1650 graphic card: for some reason it's not recognised and the graphics have low quality. So couple things to add, the LTS and stock kernel are still installed so if you do run into any issues you can easily just select the other kernel on startup or use grub-customizer to change the default boot kernel. Also, just changing the kernel usually doesn't have a big impact and is easy to revert if you have issues. I say try it out for yourself and see.

On *nix systems, *everything* is a "file". Files (obviously), devices, network sockets, unix sockets, usb devices, and pipes all use the same underlying file APIs. Many windows games use extensive locks to coordinate multiple threads, due to the way Wine implements these locks and threads, acquiring a lock requires several context switches between the wine server (windows kernel stand-in) and the running program. There is a new locking system which uses pipes or unix sockets (to acquire a lock, write to the pipe, then read from it, when the read succeeds, you own the lock) instead of the old locking system. This significantly improves performance in multi threaded games, especially on Intel platforms where context switching using the spectre mitigations are *expensive*. Only problem is each "lock" is also an open "file", hence hitting the limit of 4096 very quickly. 4096 was set as the limit back in the 90s, when the kernel memory needed to track that many files was significant (memory measured in 10s of MB, not 10s of GB). No real reason not to up it on a modern system.

Follow this: www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/dwuplr/how_to_run_age_of_empires_2_definitive_edition_on/ If done correctly your desync issue should be fixed! A bit of a pain but hey, it works.

I haven't tried playing a game but updating the kernel to 5.6 gives a better monero cpu mining hashrate. :) Thumbs up for that alone.

I've been using LM for the past year as my daily driver for everything. And after some use I can say that I don't like it very much. I've had a lot of touchpad, wifi, random heavy cpu usage, and some other weird behavior.
