Hi from Italy. I have heard that further nodes can be wired for better coverage and ethernet backhaul data. Basically they can be connected in series so that all my data is via ethernet thus quicker?

If you use a Chromebook, which supports the installation of Android Apps. The Google WiFi app will appear as if it is running on a PC. Which is much better when making how to videos.

When you connect to the main one, will it automatically connect you the closest router to you??

Hi Justin, sorry if I have misunderstood your question but I think this is the answer. From my understanding of how mesh networking works each node will have multiple wireless bands i.e. a 2.4Ghz and usually two 5Ghz bands. One of the 5ghz bands is used to interconnect the nodes of your mesh network together. This is how a mesh network maintains data throughput as your network expands. The 2.4Ghz and the second 5Ghz band is used to make your Access Point. As you add nodes to your mesh network, the technology inside Google Wifi automatically works out the fastest ways to route data back to the Primary node (main one). When you connect a computer to Google WiFi. That computer will use the node with the strongest signal. Google WiFi then works out the fastest route through your Google WiFi Mesh network using the 5Ghz band dedicated to connecting the nodes together. I hope that helps.

Yes you could but it would defeat the point of using a mesh network. A mesh network uses slightly different technology to a Wifi extender. A node on a Mesh network is able to broadcast three wireless signals. Two of those signals are used for your traditional WiFi connections. While the third is used to create something called a backhaul. The backhaul is the signal that connects the nodes on a mesh network together, and will ensure that your wifi network is fast. As your existing router is only able to broadcast using two wireless signals. Your existing router will not have a third channel that can be used as a backhaul. While it’s possible to connect Google Wifi nodes to your router via network cables. I suspect that you are using WIFi so you don’t have to run network cables in the first place. More than likely your existing router was provided by your Internet Service Provider. Which probably will mean that it is an all in one unit that acts as a modem, router, firewall, network hub and WiFi access point. As Google Wifi does not have a built in modem. You will need to use your existing router to continue to act as the modem to your home network. The easiest way to achieve this is to place your existing router in modem mode. However you need to check with your ISP that your existing router is able to function in this way. If not then it might be possible to achieve the same goal by disabling WIFi and DHCP on your existing router. Hope that help to answer your question.

Supreme Master, it is my understanding that one of the best benefits of a mesh network vs. an extender is that the mesh network is all 1 SSID. Instead of having to log out of one network and log onto another, to (say) print a document on the printer end of the house, you’re already ON that network, even at the OTHER end of the house. (Did that make sense?) That’s a big reason I’m looking at buying this. So, this would really REPLACE your current router. Hope that helps.
