Wow, that is one thing I was looking for it in this new Mesh network devices, because I already have wires all over my place and as far I saw in another reviews with Google and another brands, they never talk about this possibility. Thank you, Sir!

Pretty smart. What I did personally is ran cat5 around the house and then interconnected them using a gigabit switch off the main router that's connected to the modem.

thats what I'm looking for - have a network switch (Cisco) that runs Cat5 to my current Cisco WAPs, but I have to replace them (return to work), so was trying to find something to replace the WAP's and be connected back to the switch (and the modem)

@@johnpolanowicz1417 Cat 6 or higher will give much better performance. A couple of years ago, I had some speed problems only two feet from a wired connection to my router. I realized that the short Cat 5 cables I had been using were all old, and apparently worn out. I upgraded to new Cat 6 patch cables and the speed problems disappeared. A year ago, I got 1 Gigabit fiber service to my home, but entering the house 100 feet sway from my main computer. . I decided to get Cat 8, which is really fast, and ran a 100 foot unbroken length of Cat 8 cable from the gateway router through my attic to my main computer, with no loss of speed. I also have a Google Mesh network, and still have a few kinks with low speed from the middle mesh box - the 2 end boxes on the Mesh system have strong wired connections.

I've had the 3-node Google Wifi setup for 2 years now.. I was content with it but after experiencing a few connection drop out's on certain devices in my household.. enough was enough! I took the time to hardwire all 3 nodes instead of "over the air" wireless wifi. Best thing I have ever done! Each of my 3 Google punks are now getting 400mbps easily! (400mbps my ISP plan). Internet Modem > primary Google node > 5 port switch to main node > 2 other nodes hardwired to 5 port switch, done deal. Running 150ft and 200ft cable SUCKS but it's definitely worth it in the end!

Awesome. Thanks for including MOCA as part of the review. Plan to do a similar set up in my house. Of note, MOCA will only work after an amplifier, which many large houses may have. If you're trying to run through an amplifier it won't work. May also require higher frequency splitters.

With Moca would I go coax from the wall to moca, moca out to cable modem, then ethernet from moca to the router? I tried reading as many reviews as I could and think this is it but just want to confirm. Thanks in advance and great video.

Again, you need some 75 Ohm F connector terminators. You are allowing ingress and egress into and out of your coax network. Put the terminator on the TV/STB output port on the MoCA adapter.

Thanks for the quick reply. This above is your 1mhz to 54mhz high pass filter or MoCA filter. What I am talking about is a terminator for the unused ports on your MoCA adapters. They look like cable ends that go on the end of the TV/STB out on your adapters for the rooms that do not have TV. There is a two-way splitter built into the MoCA bridges and per the video, it looks like the port is unterminated. Leaving ports unterminated can affect your internet, tv and MoCA services in a negative manor.

Hello Lon, I did the same thing. I set up my nodes wirelessly and then connected one of them with hardwire. It all worked well until I had yo reboot my system. It didn't like the hard wire set up while rebooting. I had to disconnect the hard wire ethernet cable to allow the node to reconnect (kind of a pain). Unfortunately I ended up making that node wireless due to the hassle. Have you find the same problem? Is there a fix?

Hi from Italy. I have been watching your videos for some time now and love how you give detailed and easy to follow explanations. I have been thinking of purchasing a Google wifi mesh and your channel is the only one, and believe me I have looked at dozens, that mention wired backhaul for further modes. I would like to ask a question. My furthest node would pass through 1 switch. Can this be a problem? My setup is as follows. From my router I have 1 ethernet cable to my first switch where I have my TV an smart box satellite service. From this switch another cable crosses my home to a further access point. So when I setup Google wifi Basically my first node will connect to my router via ethernet. The ethernet cable that goes to the other switch will be put on the 2nd port of the primary Google node. Can I place the second where my TV is and the third at the furthest point (eliminating my accesspoint). At this point they will all trace back through the first switch and all go back to the main hub via the same cat 5 cable.? Hope I haven't been too confusing or have asked a stupid question. Thanks and keep making great videos. John

Lon, would you do a comparison of this against the TP-Link products? TP-Link has units that are Ethernet only, Wi-Fi only, and a combination of the two, that work through the existing wiring of the home. I'm using the TP-Links in various locations to connect via both Ethernet and Wi-Fi through my home wiring. I've been very satisfied. I can control remote pool equipment, TVs, computers and mobile devices. I'd like to compare the performance and best-use situations for each. Thank you for your informative videos.

I've covered some of the TP-Link powerline adapters in the past. They work well for the stuff you're doing (low bandwidth, home automation, etc). But I've found powerline to be quirky at times, varying speeds depending on electrical load around the house, etc. MOCA is really my go-to extender technology these days.

That is cool! But, with Comcast, we only have one ethernet jack in our 2,400 square foot two-story home. I don't know how much it would cost to have them install one more in the second story. They'd have to get out a ladder, so they'd charge for that.

Powerline Ethernet works well if all of the wiring in the rooms you want to connect through are wired to the same breaker panel. A complete kit can be purchased on Amazon for under $40 and returned for free if it doesn't work out for you. I used a kit in my brother's house to get an Ethernet connection in his garage from his bedroom.

@wnchandler14
@wnchandler14 5 жыл бұрын
I have noticed that many of the comments to this video asks questions that do not seem to get answered. I don't have an Arlo system, but I know many camera systems require 2.4 Ghz band and won't work with a 5.0 Ghz band. Google Mesh combines the 2.4 band with the 5.0 band and only presents the network as 5.0 band. Therefore many camera systems will not work with Google Mesh. I do not know of a work around for existing cameras, but there are some camera systems that will work with the 5.0 band. I am personally in this situation with a different brand of camera. I purchased a 2.4 Ghz access point and will see if it I can be attach it by Ethernet cable to the Google mesh network to provide a 2.4 band to the network for the cameras.

Hi Lon, I appreciate your how to's and reviews. Question: If you didn't need your wifi extended, could you just add the MoCA and plug your laptop or an ethernet switch directly into the MoCa for instance (and not a remote Google Wifi unit)? Also if you want both an ethernet switch and the wifi in the remote location, which is the more sensible / better performing configuration… MoCA to Ethernet Switch to Google WiFi, or MoCA to Google WiFI to Ethernet Switch? Might the former lighten the load on the Google WiFi system?

I just set this up today and works great. Be sure to connect your primary google wifi point via two cables - one from the modem (using the greenish port) and one to your network switch via the grey port on the primary wifi point. Once I did that, I connected a 2nd google wifi point from the switch using the ethernet port (grey port not the greenish port) and it worked great. Tested via the Google Wifi app and it's saying the 2nd port is wired vs my 3rd wifi port that's connected via mesh.

I wonder if this system also works like regular access points, if you have a router and then a LAN, can you connect multiple devices to the wired system and it would work. If that does not work, can you configure it to work that way. Otherwise I would view this as a flaw in the product. Perhaps they need to update the software (firmware) in the devices. Even though they are intended to be used as in the first video reviewing the products here on the channel. And the focus is easy of use for novice users or for people who do not want to deal with the technical side of these products. But I guess after using mikrotik and ubiquiti for so long, you get kind of irritated when you can not do advanced configuration of products if or when you need to.

Lon, my cable service (tv) also provides my isp service. So I have network traffic flowing through my cable modem onto my coax going back to my isp who is also my cable tv provider. How does this work with using that coax to be my internal home network? Is there any interference??? Also, in the instructions I've seen re:MoCA, it seems they're accessing a modem (somehow providing internet service) then going to coax that ~seems~ to be stand-alone separate from that modem. Instructions say connect the modem to the moca via ethernet then coax to the coax-in port on the moca device. Well, the "coax-in" piece is already being used going into the modem. How does this work?

At 2:12 in this video i was confused by the video and dialog that the WAN port had nothing plugged into it. That confused[confuses] me. Also, in other video i have longer message with questions about satellite units and if it matters what port the ethernet is plugged into? And, also if it matters if you plug SWITCHES into those ports and instead of a direct cable run from the main Google WiFi? IE. Can a Ethernet Cable from from the LAN [Not WAN] port of the main Google Wifi to a SWITCH in another part of the house? And then can a random cable from that SWITCH be plugged into the remote Google WiFi? And does it matter WHICH port that ethernet cable gets plugged into on the Google WiFi? And, as also referred to in my other verbose email. How can you tell via software that you have WIRED vs WIRELESS connections to different units? And have you been able to find an actual Google MANUAL with the advanced issues on these devices? Thanks again for everything. -- Eric ZORK Alan & Sweetie [Professional Poets & Bed Bloggers]

While speed is rarely an issue for me, consistency is a problem. Most frustrating is my Withings Home camera that serves as my baby monitor; as you can imagine, this is where frequent dropped connections are simply unacceptable. Will the Google Wifi system provide a more consistent connection here? I'm willing to go full Wifi mesh or stay MoCA as recommended for maximum connection stability. Let me know what you think! However for now we can't turn off the wifi on schedule which should be a concern to you if you have a baby (limiting EMF radiations), that may come if more people complain about it, the work around is to install a timer on the power.

Hey Lon, I've got four Google WiFi AP's setup, 3 of them via MOCA but only 1 of them shows in the Google WiFi app that it's connected via "wired" connection. The rest of them say wireless (except the one connected to my modem). And when I do a mesh test I only get "fair" as the result, never "good". Am I missing a step here?

Did you connect them wirelessly when first setting up? After that you can connect with the wire. Also make sure you have a working MOCA network, I think the Google devices default to wireless if the wired network doens't work.

Whenever I plug one of my satellite pods into an ethernet cable from my moca converters I get a message in my google wifi main page saying "Something is not quite right...." then proceeds to say " It looks like there's another device on your network acting as a DHCP server. This may impact the ability for your devices to connect to the internet." After I get that I can't test my mesh, internet, or Wi-Fi. Also all my green dots become orange on my internet, Wifi points (3), and Devices. I unplug the ethernet cable and all is good again. It does say my main pod is NAT(standard) and the others are Bridge mode.

The Google Mesh has a smartphone app called Google WIFI to test and control your network. It will show connection speed to the internet, between Mesh nodes and to all network attached devices.

Another question on the Google Wi-Fi if you have three nodes connected wirelessly and in two out of the three i decide to run an ethernet cable for example to a PlayStation or an Xbox will the wired connection work as well as the wireless? If so is it faster?

I have the same problem as some posters below. I assume one of the ethernet jacks goes to the modem. That leaves one open ethernet, but I want to have a wired connection to both my PC and my Roku device. Am I screwed? Thanks

You can connect an ethernet switch to one of the ethernet ports and you'll have more available ethernet ports to use.

Does hardwiring via MoCA eliminate the seamless handoff benefits of the mesh network? I ask because my current setup connects an AirPort Extreme to an AirPort express via MoCA and although fast, it's rather inconsistent. Will the Google Wifi solution be better in place of the apple devices?
@LonSeidman
@LonSeidman 7 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the handoff remains the same. I'll have to check with the Google folks on that. But I do believe this solution will be better than your current environment.

Can i put a switch batween the main hub and the remotes? The way the house cat5 is wired, the hub cat5 runs to a patch panel. I use a switch there to distribute in a star to the remotes. But all still have poor/slow speed except the hub, so they are still apparently still connecting to each other wirelessly. Suggestions?

I heard for every splutter you get 1/2 speed, is this true and how can I tell if I have a splutter? Also if I have this MoCa then would it be better to get a cheap router/access point for wifi instead of something more expensive?

Lon, With the Google Wi-Fi Spot only having 2 Ethernet connections, is there any kind of adapter to create more connections for Ethernet access (i.e. for using the MoCA box you mentioned)? In my current set-up, the Ethernet cable comes from my Cable Modem and connects to the Wi-Fi spot. There is a Ethernet cable leaving that Wi-Fi spot that goes to my desktop computer. I WOULD like to use the coax cable with the MoCA box in the manner you talked about, but if I don't have any ability to attach another Ethernet cable, how would that be possible?

I am thinking about getting the Google Wi-Fi setup but I'm not sure it will resolve my problem. In your review of the Moca product you mentioned that Verizon fios is at Moca 1.0 and does not support Moca 2.0. Will connecting the Google Wi-Fi system plus the Moca resolve this issue and give me something close to my 1gigabit of internet? Because right now I'm working with a coax connected extender that cap at 400mbps.

Believe me, I'm all for wired connections but isn't the bottleneck (by far) the gateway and the internet bandwidth promised/delivered by the ISP? These tweeks in this video would then be useful for continuity of service and local traffic like printing.
@LonSeidman
@LonSeidman 6 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. In some cases you could be dealing with interference from one node to the other that might impact the quality of the connection. I'm also doing a lot of high bitrate video streaming in my home that would certainly impact performance for other users. I almost always try to backhaul over wire to get the best performance.

@@satishkad1804 Hi Satish I got it to work by connecting Internet cable to main modem and then connecting LAN, which normally has grey colour marking to switch, You can also use the same port to interconnect devices. connecting a switch extends your ports as well, just in case you are looking for a better connection. I connected 5 google with different switches together to extend wifi and use ports for devices where required and it works like a charm.
