Thank you so much. My internet provider couldnt even tell me what to do for the double nat. I set my modem/router combo into bridge and panicked when i couldnt use my wifi haha. Now that I know what bridge actually does i can tey it all again and get my nest set up properly. THANK YOU!!!

Brilliant video, I learned a lot, especially about double NAT. However, I have a router/WiFi combo, and have connected the Google Nest WIFI to it and using WiFi via Google. To prevent double NAT, can I not just simply turn off the WIFI on my router/WiFi combo, versus enabling bridge mode? Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, turning off WiFi will not prevent double NAT. This is because Network Address Translation is actually one of the primary functions of a router. So in order to turn off NAT, we really need to stop a router from routing.

Hi, I am moving into a home with a combo router and want to use a nest WiFi, would I be able to connect that to the router itself to run a mesh network or do I need the modem to be separate from the router? Failing that, would you reccomend an older Google WiFi mesh node to connect to that router and run add ons around the house? or is that the same issue

Thank you! This is by far the best explanation I’ve seen on Double NAT. I have two Google Nest mesh system routers. Is every mesh system doomed to cause double NAT?

I think that there are a couple of exceptions. For example the Velop from Linksys and, maybe BT Whole Home WiFi, but as most mesh networks seem to employ a a router and wifi point system. The basic answer to your question is yes. people Double NAT should not be a problem. It's interesting to see that you have two Google Nest mesh routers, rather than one router and a wifi point. From what I can see, hardwarewithout causing Double NAT. support.google.com/googlenest/thread/18733165?hl=en It would seem that one Google Nest Router will act as the Primary Network, with the second Nest Router behaving like a WiFi point. Hope this helps answer your query.

I have similar set up with 2 mesh routers and 1 point, and one modem/router supplied by internet provider bell, if iam trying to prt foward my PS5 would I need to change modem/router to bridge disabling the wifi so my main nest router won't double nat? How am I able to use my spare nest router and wifi point as a mesh system with my primary nest that's actually connected with my (at this point) briged modem/router !? Current set up is modem/router (wifi enabled) connected with primary nest hub (set to NAT standard mode) with my second second nest router (bridge mode) and my point (bridge mode as well) iam just confused as to what my set up is currently doing if it's actually meshed but with double NAT or if it isn't meshed and double NAT main goal is to get my PS5 to actually port forward but no guidesr really explain so starting from begining to get full understanding... Sorry for super long post your reply here has been extremely good paired with these videos

Great info! I have a NAS device (no wifi feature) that's hardlined into one of my ISP's router's ports. The Google router is hardlined into the ISP router's second port. If I wanted to keep this physical configuration, would I simply need to enable bridge mode on the Google WiFi router? This setup seems somewhat obvious, but I really would like to know how I could use the Google WIFI as the router and be able to add the NAS to its network without having to purchase additional hardware. Are there other configuration options in which I can put the ISP router in bridge mode (use the Google WIFI as main router), and still be able to physically hardline the NAS to one of the other mesh points? Thank u.

Unfortunately, if a Google Wifi router is placed into bridge mode. It will not longer be able to create a mesh network. - support.google.com/wifi/answer/6240987?hl=en-GB I would like to think that if an ISP is not giving you the services you want. You simply find another ISP who will. However, unfortunately, we as consumers often have little to no real choice regarding what broadband we use. So unfortunately, if your ISP does not allow you to reconfigure the router they have provided you with. As you can't place that hardware in Bridge/Modem mode. I can only think of three options Option one, change ISP's - If you are UK based change to Plusnet or John Lewis Broadband. You can then buy a static IP address for your NAS for a one of payment of £5. Option two, if your ISP will allow you to connect your own hardware to their network. You could purchase your own modem (ie a DrayTek Vigor 130 VDSL2/ADSL modem) and use that. Option three - (which is "12 percent of a plan") If you are able, try creating a DMZ on the ISP router, and then place your Google WiFi router in the DMZ. That should in theory get around the Double NAT problem. I will keep thinking on the problem.

Great videos! I followed all of them when setting up my Synology NAS. I have a question. I am currently moving house and have set up an ethernet network connection in every room. But I also want to set up a mesh wifi for iPads etc. The walls are extremely thick stone, so I will need at least 3 units. Can I plug a Google Nest unit into my ethernet network? Can I also still have my Synology NAS on the network too? TIA.

For full disclosure, like you I also have a wired network. However, I don't use Google WiFi. Instead I use UniFi HD Flex access points as I found them to be faster at wirelessly transferring data files to and from my NAS. However as a Unifi system is expensive, and it sounds like you do not intent to transfer large data files to your NAS wirelessly. Google WiFi should be fine. So to answer your queries, what you are proposing is something called wired backhaul, and is something that Google Nest Wifi does support. As you will need a network switch for your wired network. Basically, as long as you make sure you have placed Google WiFi in the right section of your networks infrastructure. You should be able to create a mesh network that uses a wired backhaul. While this Google article is a little tricky to work with, it does explain the configuration options that are open to you - support.google.com/wifi/answer/7215624?hl=en-GB Hope it helps.

Thank you for the info. So if I already have a network set up with the google nest router i can just put my modem/router into bridge mode? Or do I have to factory reset my google router to set it up differently?

As I have a bit of experience with Google Wifi, I thought setting up Google Nest Wifi would be straight forward. However, having spent the morning doing video captures, I'm starting to realise that Google have made a mess of what was originally a fairly simple process. What I have found so far is as follows: 1. If you have already setup Google Nest Wifi and accidentally created Double NAT. Once you have reconfigured your ISP provided router to bridge mode, or purchased a new modem. In order to get Google Nest Wifi to connect to your ISP router, its looking like you need to factory reset your Google Nest Wifi setup and start again. 2. Google Home, seems to be the only way we can setup Google Nest Wifi. So as I am trying to think like a home user. Once I do have Google Nest Wifi setup, I can't see where I can access any of the advanced features of Google Nest Wifi. So at the moment my inner IT engineer, suspects that I will also have to download and use the Google Wifi app, which is just dumb. 3. Google Home requires that the device I'm using to setup my Google Nest Wifi is connected to the internet. So if I try and use a WiFi only tablet or Chromebook I will not be able to configure Google Nest Wifi from that device. Basically, this means we have to use an iPhone or an Android handset with a data plan if we want to setup our Google Nest Wifi router to use a setting such as PPoE. Please note that these are only my initial thoughts based on what I have done so far. There will be a lot of revised thinking as I write the script, and hopefully I can make the process easier to understand when it is shown visually.

mydoodads So what do you suggest I do?
@mydoodads
@mydoodads 4 жыл бұрын
If you are having no problems with you internet connection. For example games consoles work OK or you do not need to access devices on your network remotely. I would recommend leaving your setup configured the way it is.

mydoodads My problem is that my WiFi randomly drops out for a few minutes and we have to wait or I have to reset it. It does this almost everyday. What should I do?
@mydoodads
@mydoodads 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay in replying. That problem could be a range of issues. However, my best guess would be interference from an external source (ie someone else's WiFi). So I would test that theory by turning off WiFi on my computer, and then plugging the computer into my router using a network cable. If I don't see the internet connection drop while using my computer having been connected to the internet only via a network cable. That to me would be an indication that the issue was related to WiFi interference. If it is interference, I would then look to see if I can manually change the Wifi signal channels my Google Wifi is using, or add additional Google Wifi points to better blanket my home with wifi.

I've got an EE smart hub which functions as a router/modem combo. EE state this cannot be placed in bridge mode and I can't find the option to do so via the smart hub manager either. Is there a way of preventing double NAT without placing in bridge mode? I've tried DMZ and port forwarding but I'm still plagued by connectivity issues (Nest wifi keeps losing signal and restarting, disconnecting all my devices in doing so). Cheers

The only other way to get around double NAT that I know of, is to replace the EE Smart Hub with a modem, and connect your Google Nest Wifi router to your replacement modem. I did some checking and I think EE, do allow you to use your own modem on their fibre network. However, you should double check with them. ee.co.uk/help/help-new/broadband-and-landline/home-broadband/how-do-i-use-my-own-router-for-home-broadband ee.co.uk/help/help-new/broadband-and-landline/home-broadband/what-are-my-home-broadband-internet-settings A DrayTek Vigor 130 should do the trick - www.draytek.co.uk/support/guides/kb-isp-ee You would then connect your Google Nest Wifi router to the Vigor 130 to give you a WiFi network. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

You could, but you would then be running with double NAT. So if for example, you connected a PS4 console to the mesh network. That PS4 would have problems playing on line.
