This video saved me! I have a pattern for a lovely blouse. The instructions for the collar are "Sew in collar", which is really not helpful! My first attempt at the blouse has ended up as rags for the household as the collar was a shambles! But now thanks to this video I have a lovely blouse with a perfect collar! Thank-you Professor Pincushion!

Love your videos! Helped me with different ideas and projects. Question: if I don't have fusible interfacing, what could be an alternative? What kind of interfacing are you using? Yours looks lighter than the one I bought which is quite thick (good to stable bags). Appreciate your feedback.
@ProfessorPincushion8 жыл бұрын
+Just Maria I'm probably using a lightweight fusible interfacing from Pellon. There's definitely different weights you can find at the fabric store. You can also use sew-in interfacing or use other fabrics for interfacing. Check out this tutorial on interfacing 101: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn6vZa2Hq5xrmJo

Question: (I probably would find the answer by re-watching this video more carefully) Which piece of material is best to iron the fusable lining to--the part that touches the neck or the outer piece that shows on the outside? And why?
@ProfessorPincushion10 жыл бұрын
Karen V The band that has the interfacing is considered the "facing" piece to the collar and it goes on the inside (or the part that touches the neck). I don't know why exactly it's like this or if you'll even notice if you do the opposite but every collar I've ever made has been like this.
@karenv133910 жыл бұрын
Professor Pincushion thank you! And thinking about it more..the 'unlined' piece probably looks more natural--not as stiff--and might look more like the rest of the garment. Right? haha! guessing.

hi professor! very helpful video for me .. BUT!!!!! i' ve question about the neckline cutting that is: is there any generelized formoula of neckline cutting according to the collar size. if my collar size is 18 so how much neckline should i cut for a perfect fit.
@ProfessorPincushion8 жыл бұрын
+Hina Masood You can use the neckline of the bodice pattern to help create your collar pattern. If you tape the front and back bodices together (overlapping the seam allowance) at the shoulders, put a piece of tracing paper over it. the bodice neckline would be used to draft the bottom of the collar pattern and then you just draw the shape of the collar you want to have and add your seam allowance.

Hello. Thanks for this really helpful. I am working on a pattern with a similar collar and finding it difficult. I notice you don't understich the collar... this seems easier.. is it not necessary?
@ProfessorPincushion6 жыл бұрын
not really in this case because you usually understitch if it's going to be tucked inside like a facing and also if you understitch and then top stitch it might look a little messy with two rows of stitches.
@MrsStepford6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for getting back to me on this my dear Professor! I agree. I do plan to top stitch and it would be too much. Again - thanks an absolute bunch! Love your work!

What is the collar band pattern referred to in the video? If a pattern is necessary, a link to it in the description would be helpful.

This demonstration is not specific to a particular pattern, I just choose one that I currently owned for the tutorial. If you have a pattern with a band collar, the steps should be pretty similar.

I tried but my band color was shorter then neckline. I don't know how deep and wide neckline should be and how to measure the band collar according to neckline and how much should be neckline. please can u give the exact measurements
@ProfessorPincushion10 жыл бұрын
tallat naeem it depends on your shirt size. If you measure the neckline curve of front and back (doubling it if each pattern is half size) that should give you the length the collar needs to be. Also, make sure you're adding seam allowance.

when I stitch the ban coller one side is more longer then the other why..??
@ProfessorPincushion9 жыл бұрын
+zahra batool do you mean that it extends past the edge of the neckline? When done, the collar edges will overlap each other when the shirt is buttoned up. But if you mean that the collar seems to be longer than the edge of the neckline, it might be an issue with pinning. Make sure to pin the ends together first to make sure that matches and then work on the middle. If you start pinning on one end and then move forward, then sometimes things are a little off. Check out my tutorial on easing to see how I pin when things are a little off. Hope that helps.

If you stitch the outer side second then you won't need to hand stitch from the inside.
@ProfessorPincushion7 жыл бұрын
the hand stitch is to make sure that the inside is secured so it makes it a lot easier to the the outside top stitch. Sometimes the top stitch doesn't always catch the inside edge.
@FareedChughtai7 жыл бұрын
Right, but stitching the inside separately first then stitching the outer side requires no hand work. In this way you wouldn't need to catch the inner side from the top stitch. Just a thought for those who were saying they wish to avoid hand sewing.

hello! Im new to sewing clothes and ive been trying to figure out how to sew up a cosplay. The only thing is the cosplay requires a collar. Im going as Sayuri Hanayori from the anime seraph of the end and can really use some tips! The shirt looks a bit like a military jacket. I was going to use a pattern for a button down dress shirt then make the front panel that buttons down a completely second piece. Now what ive been struggling with is should I make it a button down shirt under that panel or have a zipper go down or even have it a solid shirt without a opening in the front but then can I still attach a collar onto something that doesn't open at the front? Your input would mean A LOT! As im a beginner itd really mean a lot if you give me your advice or how you'd go at a project like this. Thank you!
@ProfessorPincushion6 жыл бұрын
super cute! Have you seen this pattern? www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/military-jacket-102012 The style is a little different than the character's jacket but you can use it as a foundation, maybe have a zipper front or hooks and eyes and then create a separate center panel that buttons on over the front of the jacket to get a similar look. So the jacket can have the brass buttons sewn on the sides and then you just do a center panel that buttons onto those brass buttons. It might be a little bit of a pain in the neck if you have to frequently get in and out of the jacket but if it stays on for awhile, I think you'll pull of the look. It also might be a little more simple to create. Hope that helps!

'More trickier' and 'more flatter' are pretty bad English. The suffix -er implies that it is more, so either ditch the -er e.g. more tricky, more flat, or ditch the 'more'.
